Hagedorns Extreme Rightwing Views
While most recent Wisconsin Supreme Court candidates and Walker appointees have been partisan, extremist and openly anti-LGBTQ, Hagedorn lowers the bar even further.
Brian Hagedorn is more extreme, more partisan and more beholden to special interests than any recent Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate weve seen, says Joanna Beilman-Dulin, research director for One Wisconsin Now. He has shown through his views, writings and actions just how extreme he is.
Given that hes been in the campaign spotlight less than a year, Hagedorns hit parade is surprisingly long. In his law school blog, Hagedorn argued that a U.S. Supreme Court ruling striking down anti-sodomy laws in Texas could end up legalizing bestiality. He also wrote of his hate for Planned Parenthooda wicked organization, in his opinion. In the same blog he labeled the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People a disgrace to America.
According to One Wisconsin Now, Hagedorn was the lawyer at the center of drafting Walkers attempt to gut the Wisconsin Idea. He fought a losing battle to hide those open records from the public.
However, most voters do want justices to behave ethically. A few weeks ago, Hagedorn shocked observers when he indicated he might not recuse himself from cases involving the controversial Act 10. Its a good thing that revisiting the states current judicial recusal rules is near the top of Neubauers agendaif shes elected.

Lisa Neubauer Concedes Wisconsin Supreme Court Race To Brian Hagedorn
Wisconsin Appeals Judge Lisa Neubauer, who was backed by Democrats, conceded Wednesday in the race for Wisconsin Supreme Court. Neubauer issued a statement, saying she called her opponent, conservative Appeals Judge Brian Hagedorn, and wished him the best.
Unofficial results from the April 2 election showed Hagedorn with a half-percentage point lead, and the race was too close to call. Neubauer indicated she would request a recount, something her campaign would have had to pay for. In conceding, Neubauer admitted that the official canvass of the vote would not measurably change the outcome.

Wisconsins Supreme Court race is up in the air. Tuesdays election between conservative Appeals Judge Brian Hagedorn and Appeals Judge Lisa Neubauer, who was backed by Democrats, was too close to call by Wednesday morning, with Hagedorn holding a 5,800 vote margin with nearly 100 percent of the unofficial vote tallied. More than 1 million votes were cast.
Hagedorn declared victory Wednesday morning, calling the half-point difference insurmountable. But, the margin allows the trailing candidate to request a recount.

Public Opinion About Women And Political High Office
A 2018 Pew research poll found that 45% of people in the U.S. said they personally hoped a woman would be elected president in their lifetime. About half of all women said they personally hoped this would happen, compared with 38% of men. However, the general public believes there are barriers for women who seek top leadership positions in politics. Another Pew Research Center survey reveals that two-thirds of Americans said its easier for men to get elected to high political offices.

Lisa Neubauer Concedes In Supreme Court Race
The liberal candidate in Wisconsin’s Supreme Court race conceded Wednesday, deciding against a recount eight days after the election showed her conservative opponent ahead by 6,000 votes in a race seen as an early measure of a key battleground in the 2020 presidential campaign.
Lisa Neubauer’s concession to Brian Hagedorn means the conservative majority on the court will increase from 4-3 to 5-2 when he takes the seat in August. Conservatives will hold control until at least 2023, denying liberals a change to take the majority in next year’s election.
The Hagedorn win also gives Republicans a boost of confidence heading into the 2020 presidential election year, with his victory coming after a string of stinging losses last year.
Republicans and Democrats alike pointed to the thin margin as a sign of how hotly contested Wisconsin will be in 2020. The tight race came after Republican Scott Walker lost the governor’s race by just over a point in 2018 and President Donald Trump carried Wisconsin by just under a point in 2016.
Liberals were optimistic they could win the seat, especially after a Democratic-backed candidate won in 2018 and Democrats swept statewide elections in November, most notably ousting Walker.
President Donald Trump tweeted congratulations to Hagedorn, calling it a “big surprise win” in a “very important Supreme Court seat.”
Hagedorn was endorsed by the National Rifle Association and Wisconsin Right to Life.

Wisconsin Supreme Court Race Too Close To Call After 12 Million Votes
Madison, Wis. — The Wisconsin Supreme Court race that liberals needed to win to have a shot at taking majority control of the court next year appeared headed for a recount. Still, the conservative candidate declared victory overnight while holding a narrow lead following Tuesday’s election.
A conservative win would increase their majority to 5-2 and ensure their control over the court, which they’ve held since 2008, for years to come. It would be a particularly stinging defeat for liberals, who were confident and riding a wave of wins in 2018, including picking up a Supreme Court seat and ousting Republican Gov. Scott Walker.
Conservative Brian Hagedorn, who was Walker’s chief legal counsel for five years, led liberal-backed Lisa Neubauer by 5,911 votes out of 1.2 million cast, based on unofficial results. That is a difference of about 0.49 percentage point, close enough for Neubauer to request a recount but she would have to pay for it.
Hagedorn declared victory early Wednesday morning.
“The people of Wisconsin have spoken, and our margin of victory is insurmountable,” the Hagedorn campaign said in a statement released just after 2 a.m. Wednesday, CBS affiliate WISC-TV reported.
“I am deeply humbled and honored by the voters who have placed their trust in me to serve as Wisconsin’s next Supreme Court justice. The voters chose to have a Court that keeps personal political beliefs out of the courtroom and applies the law as written,” the statement said.

So Who Is Wisconsin Supreme Court Candidate Lisa Neubauer
On Tuesday, April 2, as voters select a new justice to sit on the Wisconsin Supreme Court for a 10-year term, hanging in the balance is whether next year Wisconsinites can wrest the seven-seat court away from the rightwing stranglehold imposed on it by former Governor Scott Walker, who consistently fought to pack the high court with backers of his divisive, hyper-partisan agenda.
At stake before this court could be rulings on such vital issues as voter identification, redistricting, womens healthcare and the Republican Partys lame duck power grabs. Conservatives control the current court four to three. That balance stays if Chief Judge of the Wisconsin District Two Court of Appeals Lisa Neubauer wins, setting the stage for the court to flip in 2020. It goes to five to two favoring conservatives if her opponent, Judge Brian Hagedorn, who also sits on the District Two Court, wins.
That is because it is also the race to fill the shoes of trailblazing, unapologetically progressive Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Shirley Abrahamson, who is retiring after more than 40 years on the court. Yet, it appears at first glance that there is not really a candidate in her mold on the ballot. That is, until you look beyond Neubauers cautious script of fair, impartial and independent into her life of dedicated community service and pursuit of justice that evokes Abrahamsons intellect and compassion.

Unlike every other state scheduled to hold an election after March 17, Wisconsin was the only one to hold its election in-person. The rest moved to a different date, or to all mail-in ballots.
Thats because some states grant governors or other authorities explicit powers to alter election practices during emergencies, UW-Madison political science professor Barry Burden told The Badger Project in an email. In other states there has been cooperation between the governor and the state legislature to reschedule primary elections. Wisconsin has neither.
Since the race for the Democratic nomination for president was not competitive between Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, the main event in the Wisconsin Spring Election was the race for state Supreme Court.
The right-leaning state Supreme Court Justice Dan Kelly, who was appointed there in 2016, faced Dane County Circuit Judge Jill Karofsky, who is backed by liberals. Results wont be calculated until Monday, April 13.
Conservatives hold a 5-2 majority on the states highest court, and liberals were hoping to chop that advantage down to 4-3 with a Karofsky win.
She had the initial advantage. The election is being held on the same ballot as the Democratic Presidential Primary, which under normal circumstances boosts voter turnout on the left.
But the deadly COVID-19 pandemic scrambled everything, as did the Republican-controlled Legislatures refusal to move the election.

Remember last year when #PostcardsToVoters-supported candidate Judge Rebecca Dallet won a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court by double digits? It was reported as a bad omen for Scott Walker and the WI GOP. After all, it was the first time in 23 years that a Democratic candidate won an open seat on that highest state court.
Now, we are going to have more time, with more volunteer writers, and a longer list of terrific Democratic voters to boost winning turnout for Judge Lisa Neubauer.

Control of the Wisconsin Supreme Court is on the line as Court of Appeals Chief Judge Lisa Neubauer takes on the Republican candidate in the race to replace retiring Justice Shirley Abrahamson . Replacing Abrahamson, one of the courts three liberal justices, would not immediately swing the courts balance of power one way or another. But if Neubauer wins, it would be highly likely that liberals take a 4-3 majority when conservative Justice Dan Kelly runs for re-election in the spring of 2020. Kelly has the extreme misfortune of appearing on the same ballot as the literally dozens of Democratic presidential candidates who are already lining up for a chance to take on President Trump.
Neubauers campaign manager, Tyler Hendricks, in a public statement said: We are seeing record levels of support across the board, including endorsements from more than 320 current and former judges, and a bipartisan group of 50 district attorneys and 25 sheriffs.
