On Struggles At Home During The Pandemic

A mother of three young children â ages 8, 6, and 4 â McGrath told Moody that âlike all families right now, weâre struggling with school.â

Talking about the pandemic with her children, McGrath said, has also presented challenges. âMy four-year-old, almost every day, she says âIs the virus gone yet?’â

âIt didnât have to be this way,â she said, citing some steps sheâd take to prevent such a catastrophe from happening again. âLetâs invest in public health. Letâs change the way we look at this. Letâs not politicize mask wearing. These are the types of things we need to make sure we donât do this again.â

RICHMOND, Ky. At 5 a.m. on Election Day, Mark Nickolas awoke to write a speech he thought would never be delivered.

Mr. Nickolas, the campaign manager for Amy McGrath, one of the Democratic Partys most high-profile candidates for Congress, quickly drafted a 400-word concession, printed it, sealed it in an envelope, and then deleted it from his computer.

He had hoped to burn it after Ms. McGrath claimed victory. Instead, at 8:28 p.m., he pulled out the envelope and handed it to her.

Ms. McGraths loss to Representative Andy Barr in this central Kentucky congressional district made vivid the yawning divide between rural America and the rest of the nation. Her campaigns election model called for her to win 57 percent of the vote in Fayette County, home of the districts largest city, Lexington, and the University of Kentucky. She won almost 60 percent.

But she underperformed in Franklin County, home of the state capital, Frankfort, and more important, Mr. Barr ran up the score in the districts 17 rural counties. As with so many of the nations House districts, the rural stretches were not receptive to the campaign pitches that drove urban and young voters.

If you cant win here, nobody can, Ben Chandler, the last Democrat to hold the seat, said to Ms. McGrath as he hugged her.

Then the migrant caravan started.

Soon her face looked grim. She paced the room. And finally, Mr. Nickolas reached down for the envelope and handed it to her.

While some of assets ultimately derive from the Navy, a large amount of support is drawn from the United States Air Force. The Marine Corps makes extensive use of the USAF to Marines and equipment, along with utilizing close air support from the Air Force. The Air Force may also attach units to conventional Marine ground forces to provide coordination for close air support.

The Air Force traditionally provides the who controls “sorties for air defense, and long range interdiction and reconnaissance” while the MAGTF commander retains control of the Marines’ organic aviation assets, however Marine Aviation missions not directly in the support of the MAGTF will be typically controlled by the JFACC.

Why Amy Mcgrath Could Cost Republicans The Us Senate Even If She Loses To Mitch Mcconnell

By David Morgan, Jarrett Renshaw

– Kentucky Democrat Amy McGraths long-shot bid to unseat U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell could help undermine Republican efforts to retain their majority in the chamber, even if the former Marine Corps fighter pilot fails to beat McConnell in November.

Political analysts see the chances of Democrats winning enough seats to seize control of the Senate in the Nov. 3 U.S. election rising, with President Donald Trumps sliding poll numbers endangering a growing number of Republican incumbents.

McConnell, a tenacious political survivor, has endured election challenges in the past and is still expected to defeat McGrath, who on Tuesday emerged as her partys nominee to challenge him.

But McGrath has raised more campaign funds than McConnell and poses a threat. That means the Republican Party and Republican-aligned political action committees may be forced to spend more to bolster McConnells re-election bid than they may have planned, potentially limiting resources that could go to help incumbents in eight other states who are seen as vulnerable, analysts and officials from both parties said.

Its a very precarious situation for Republicans. There are multiple paths to a Democratic majority, and those increase with the presidents national polling numbers on the decline, said Jessica Taylor, a political analyst who tracks Senate races for the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.

What The Polling Said

Recent polls had found McConnell leading McGrath by varying margins.

The most recent poll, from Morning Consult, conducted from October 22 to 31, found McConnell ahead of McGrath by 11 points, 51% to 40%, among likely voters.

A poll conducted by Mason Dixon Strategies from October 12 to 15 found McConnell leading McGrath by 9 points, 51% to 42%, among likely voters, and a Data for Progress poll conducted from September 14 to 19 found McConnell ahead of McGrath by 7 points, 48% to 41%.

A survey conducted by Quinnipiac University from September 10 to 14 found McConnell leading McGrath by 12 points, 53% to 41%, among likely voters.

Quinnipiac’s previous survey, conducted July 30 to August 3, found McConnell ahead by 5 points, 49% to 44%, among registered voters.

On The Balance Between Police Reform And Law And Order

Democrat Amy McGrath concedes defeat: I ‘respect’ the voters’ decision

McConnellâs campaign has portrayed McGrath as a supporter of âviolent mobs that threaten to put Kentucky families at risk,â but she told Moody, âI would never, ever advocate for violence or destruction of property, or looting.â She also said she does not support defunding the police.

McGrath acknowledged that âwe need to work on racial justice.â Among the police reform efforts she supports are the expanded use of body cameras and a national database that prevents officers from being dismissed from one department and promptly hired by another.

Amy Mcgrath Remains Hopeful As Election Day Nears

LOUISVILLE, KY – As the candidates make their final push before the Nov. 3 General Election, were taking a look at the U.S. Senate race between the current Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Democrat challenger Amy McGrath.

I think its going really well, McGrath said days before the election. We had this debate a week and a half ago.

McGrath believes the one and only debate with Republican Senator Mitch McConnell produced by Kentucky Gray TV stations WAVE 3 News and WKYT in Lexington gave her momentum against one of the nations most influential republicans.

Kentuckians could see a real contrast between somebody who represents Washington D.C. more than he represents Kentucky, McGrath said of the debate.

The challenger, whos criss crossing the state in socially distanced events, told voters shell work for lower prescription drug prices while pushing her stance that McConnell has been in office 36 years too long and is consumed with power. McGrath maintains McConnell proved her point by being in Washington to seal the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett instead of getting a coronavirus relief bill passed.

Hes ramming through a Supreme Court nominee, McGrath said, thats what hes doing with eight days to an election in the middle of a national crisis.

McGrath also used McConnells own words in the debate for new campaign commercials. The ad shows McConnell stating, Shes a Marine, shes a mom and Ive been there too long.

Despite McConnell’s unpopularity among Democrats and her own impressive fundraising, McGrath was still considered unlikely to defeat the majority leader, who has held his Senate seat since 1986.

Not only did McConnell have a formidable track record and unparalleled stature in the state, but Kentucky didn’t trend Democratic at a rate that could put McConnell in serious danger.

The state largely doesn’t fit the demographic profile of many of the other formerly deep-red states like Arizona, Georgia, and Texas that are now trending purple thanks to sizeable blocs of college-educated voters swinging toward the Democrats.

McConnell defeated the Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes by 16 percentage points six years ago, and Trump carried the state .

Opinion: Amy Mcgraths Memoir Tells Us About More Than Politics

Sen. Mitch McConnell speaks after winning reelection, defeating Democrat Amy McGrath

Amy McGrath ran for Kentuckys 6th Congressional District in 2018 and the states Senate seat in 2020. She did not win either, although her story of military service transfixed millions of Americans thanks to viral ads. She has written a memoir, Honor Bound, which offers fascinating detail on the physical and mental toll that military training and combat take, especially for a female pilot breaking the glass ceiling.

Below is a conversation with McGrath that has been edited for length and clarity:

Rubin: The generals for 20 years claimed we were making progress in Afghanistan. Twenty years later, we leave without victory. What happened?

McGrath: I was a relatively low rank as an officer at that time during my first tour, and so I believed what those above me were saying. They all seemed to believe we could win the fight there, and so while I didnt see how, I trusted them. This, of course, is a theme from the Iraq War as well.

Rubin: What about elected leaders role?

I remain torn on Afghanistan. Its not a black-and-white type of war. I feel terrible for the Afghan people, and I think we need to honor our commitments to those who worked with us . But when my friend, and fellow Marine pilot was killed , I couldnt say definitively what he died for. Thats when I knew for sure that I didnt want to be there and that I didnt think it was worth more American men and women putting their lives at risk.

Mitch Mcconnells Certain Fate

Amy McGrath will try to do what Beto ORourke couldnt: Remove a high-profile Republican from a deep-red state.

Its official: Cocaine Mitch has a 2020 challenger.

The Democrat Amy McGrath, a former fighter pilot turned congressional candidate who starred in one of the most viral political ads of 2018, will take on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for his Kentucky seat. Her campaign is only two days old, but already the outline of a strategy has emerged: On a few choice issues, McGrath plans to position herself as a sort of pro-Trump Democrat, while framing McConnell as the poster child for a swamp in dire need of draining.

Its going to be a struggle. Defeating the six-term incumbent Republican in the ruby-red state would be an incredible upset in the world of politicsso unlikely as to be almost laughable. It would require a stunning feat of political acrobatics as well as an outrageous amount of money for McGrath to pull it off. And yet, Democrats have hope.

McConnells approval rating in the state is low, noted Representative John Yarmuth, a Democrat who represents Kentuckys Third Congressional District, and McGrath will have all the money she needs to compete with Mitch, he told me. Theres an opportunity.

Id give her a 20 percent shot at it.
