Why Wharton Should Take Back Trumps Business Degree

‘Wildly incorrect’: Daniel Dale fact-checks Trump’s 2024 announcement

Donald Trump, the most famous alumnus of the Wharton School

Ever since he graduated from the University of Pennsylvanias Wharton School, Donald Trump has smartly used his education there to claim how smart and sophisticated he is. Over his long and crooked career in business, the Wharton brand has been central to much of his mythmaking. He has consistently claimed that his graduation from Wharton is evidence of his intellect. Trump often asserts that he went to the hardest school to get into, the best school in the world, calling it super genius stuff.

As he so proudly proclaims, he is a graduate of the Wharton School of Finance. Never mind that the school considers itself more than just a place to funnel talent to the financial sector and real estate. And never mind that admission standards back in the 1960s are nothing like they are today.

And after four incompetent years in the most prestigious and powerful position on earth, after Trump incited a mob to invade, occupy and vandalize our seat of government, Wharton should do more than condemn him. It should claw back the diploma he was awarded in 1968. For a moment, American democracy fell to an insurrection fueled and egged on by its most prominent graduate. What an embarrassment and disgrace.

H1b Visa Changes: What Does Trumps Executive Order Mean For Mbas

How hard could Donald Trumps suspension on new H-1B visas impact international MBA candidates and graduates in the US?

Register here

President Trump has temporarily suspended the issuing of new H-1B work visas for foreign workers seeking employment in the United States. Its the latest in a string of anti-immigration policies intended to curtail the number of foreign workers in the US.

The executive order also bans the issuing of new L visas. The L-1 visa was a useful alternative to the H-1B Visa for foreign workers looking to work in the US. It allows migrants to be employed for a US company with global operations and return to work for the company in the States.

Under the order, American companies with operations overseas and overseas companies with operations in the US are unable to transfer foreign executives and other employees to the United States for months or year-long contracts.

Officials have said that together with green card restrictions as many as 525,000 foreign workers could be kept out of the country until the end of 2020, when the current restriction ends.

Donald Trumps Brother Fred Trump Jr Graduated From Lehigh

Donald Trumps oldest brother, Fred Trump Jr., didnt go to the University of Pennsylvanias famous Wharton School. He actually graduated from Lehigh University in 1960, according to The Washington Post. He also had ambitions of being a TWA pilot, studying up on aviation books while his father berated him for trying to be a chauffeur in the sky, according to the Washington Post story. Ultimately, he gave up on that dream, and opted instead to work in the family business.

Notably, while Fred didnt go to Wharton School to study business, he was, however, friends with James Nolan, an admissions officer at Wharton, who was instrumental in getting Donald Trump into the University of Pennsylvania. He called me and said, You remember my brother Donald? Which I didnt, Nolan said in an interview with The Washington Post . He said, Hes at Fordham and he would like to transfer to Wharton. Will you interview him? Nolan agreed to the interview, which Donald attended with his father, Fred Trump Sr. The admissions officer gave him a rating that was decent enough to support his candidacy, and Donald finished his college years at Penn.

Trump graduated from Penn in 1968 with a bachelor of science in economics from The Wharton School, then called Wharton School of Finance. In 1973, a year before Trump became president of the conglomerate that would be The Trump Organization, The New York Times reported Trump graduated “first in his class” from The Wharton School.

Trump’s performance as a student remains highly contested. For Trump himself, it’s mostly about what a high-powered degree signals to others.

The State Of The Us Economy Under Biden

Though COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on the American economy, many financial institutions predict a speedier economic recovery under Bidens presidency. Goldman Sachs ascertains that although Biden is proposing higher taxes for corporations, hes also ensured a large amount of government spending, which paired with low interest rates, could help lift the economy out of recession. Further, Bidens win increases the likelihood of a $2 trillion stimulus package being passed, which could make a major positive impact on the state of the economy.

Moodys predicts a quicker economic recovery under Biden as welland expects Bidens presidency will create upwards of 18 million jobs, with the economy returning to a low unemployment rate of approximately 4% by the end of 2022.

Lastly, Biden working with what looks like will be a Republican Senate increases the likelihood that we will see more moderate policies and economic stability arise from the United States in the coming months and years. This is reassuring news for international students looking to work in the United States after post-graduation.

Trump Is An Idiot Who Didnt Get An Mba From Wharton Explained

Think about this: When President Donald Trump was a private citizen, he hated President Barack Obama so much that he regularly antagonized him on Twitter. In fact, one could argue that when Trump wasnt eating KFC or killing a puppy with his tiny fingers, it was his part-time job to troll Obama on social media.

At one point, the now president of the small states with major size envy not only tweeted that he knew that Obama was a bad student but demanded that the president release his school records.

No, President Trump, you arent who you pretend to be. Recently, the smarts of the president of DevilVomit, Fla., have been called into question. In fact, theyve been called into question so much that the president of FatTires, Miss., has had to come out to say, Im really smart! Everyone knows that once you start stating how smart you are, then you are probably really stupid.

So it turns out that the president of GodsBurp, Ga., likes to allow everyone to believe that he got an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, when, in fact, he only went to Wharton undergrad.

During his run for the White House, Trump touted his top-tier education.

Mystery #: After Two Years At Fordham University Did Trump Need Special Treatment To Gain Admission To Wharton

The answer begins with James A. Nolan, the Penn admissions officer who interviewed Trump and ushered his application through the vetting process, which he says he did at the behest of Trumps older brother, Fred Trump Jr. Nolan grew up in Queens and had been friends with Fred since high school in the mid-1950s. During an interview at his apartment on Washington Square, Nolan told me he spent a lot of time in those days at the Trump McMansion in Jamaica Estates, which he described as very big, with lots of bedrooms and blackface lawn jockeys lining the approach. Both friends planned to enroll at Penn, but only Nolan got accepted. Ten years later, Nolan was working in Penns admissions department he would later become director of undergraduate admissions when Fred called in a favor.

This was first revealed in Gwenda Blairs book The Trumps: Three Generations That Built an Empire . Whether that was 100 percent why he got in, I dont know, but clearly it was helpful, Blair told me. Blair says that at Nolans request she kept his identity a secret until earlier this summer, when Nolan granted interviews to the Washington Post and this magazine.

Nolan is adamant: Trump wasnt accepted to Wharton solely on his say-so. Both the head of transfer student admissions and the vice dean reviewed Trumps application and Nolans interview notes before giving final approval.

Mystery #: Did Donald Trump Finish First In His Class At Wharton As He Bragged To Multiple Journalists Over The Years

This assertion appeared in a fawning New York Times profile of the Trump Organization published in 1973, the same year the Department of Justice sued Donald and his father Fred for housing discrimination for refusing to rent to people of color. Sample paragraph:

Donald, who was graduated first in his class from the Wharton School of Finance of the University of Pennsylvania in 1968, joined his father about five years ago. He has what his father calls drive. Donald is the smartest person I know, he remarked admiringly.

The claim was repeated in another doting profile of Trump in the New York Times in 1976. Noting that practically every article ever written about Trump in the wake of the Times profiles parroted the first in his class claim, the Times finally corrected the record in yet anothereye-roll-inducing profile published in 1984 , declaring that the notion that Trump finished first in his class at Wharton was contradicted by the universitys commencement program.

Trump himself finally copped to this in a 1988 New York magazine story written by Julie Baumgold. Okay, maybe not first, as myth has it, Baumgold wrote, but he had the highest grades possible.

He Doesnt Seem To Think That Academic Credentials Are Important

According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, Donald Trumps comments about his college education reveal a dubiousness about the importance of academic credentials even as he braggadociously touts his own and an impatience with curricular pursuits that lack an obvious utilitarian applicability. The publication adds that Trump saw higher education as a means to an end.

Fordham University and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where Mr. Trump transferred to complete a bachelors degree in economics, were essentially credential factories, the publication explains. To build the real estate empire he envisioned, he needed the degree. But as the Chronicle notes, it was clear to Mr. Trumps classmates that Mr. Trumps relationship with Penn would be a transactional one he would learn what he thought he needed to learn, and skim the rest.

Mystery #: What Do We Know About Tiffanys Penn Years

In 2012, Tiffany arrived at Penn on the heels of a brief but doomed bid at autotuned pop stardom , as her father was waging his notoriously racist birther fake-news campaign. She double-majored in sociology and urban studies. According to unnamed sources interviewed by Vanity Fair, she was rebuffed in efforts to join Tabard, a secret society that offers its members an exclusive social network, out of fear that a scion of the toxic Trump family tree might drive away the swells.

But Kappa Alpha Theta was apparently happy to have her. Her alleged billionaire father reportedly kept her on a short leash, doling out a miserly $500-a-month allowance. Still, she managed to make the rounds of the elite-rich-kid party scene at Penn. One party boy who insisted on anonymity summed up the scene to me thusly: Youre looking at Tiff Trump passing a joint to me, and Im passing it to a kid who grabs it while wearing a $38,000 rose gold Patek Philippe watch and then, you know, accidentally drops the joint into his cheap red cup filled with Grey Goose. And that was a normal Tuesday night for them.
