The 2010 Jeep Patriot Gets High Though Not Perfect Ratings For Safety In A Class Of High Achievers

Jeep Patriot Interior

Standard safety features abound on the 2010 Jeep Patriot, and crash-test scores are good from both insurance groups and the federal government.

When it comes to safety, the 2010 Patriot fares well in the federal government’s crash tests, with four- and five-star ratings for frontal protection and five stars for side impact. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awards the Patriot with “good” scores in frontal and side tests. Roof strength testing also yields a result of “good.”

The 2010 Jeep Patriot comes with a very generous list of standard safety features for the price, including electronic stability control with electronic roll mitigation, front side airbags, and side curtain airbags.

ConsumerGuide states that for the occupants of the Jeep Patriot, “Visibility is good all around.” Cars.com adds that four-wheel-drive Jeep Patriots get hill descent control and off-road brake traction control.

Common Jeep Patriot Problems

According to RepairPal, the Jeep Patriot has a Reliability Rating of 4.0 out of 5.0. It ranks 15th out of 26 compact SUVs. Despite its above-average reliability scores, the Patriot had some glaring issues, including:

  • Premature CVT failure – The Patriots continuously variable transmission is prone to failure. Drivers experienced symptoms like acceleration issues, overheating warnings, and whining noises. Customers claimed that the Patriots CVT was poorly designed.
  • Water leaking into the cabin – Numerous Patriot models are known to have leaky cabins. Some reported the water came in through the sunroof, while some came through the dome light. This increases the risk of electrical issues and mold growth.
  • Stalling engine – One of the worst issues with the Patriot lineup is the stalling engine. After 30k miles or so, several reports claimed the engine stalled and died while running. Typical fixes include replacing the crankshaft sensor or ABS module, which may cost you up to $660.
  • Rough manual shifting – The 2007 to 2010 Patriots were known to have manual transmission issues, but its not as bad as the CVT. Owners have reported vibrations and grinding noises whenever they shift into third gear. Some noted the same roughness when shifting to first and second gear. The touted fix is to replace the synchronizer rings of the transmission.

The 2010 Jeep Patriot Is Unlike Any Other Vehicle On The Market With Good Safety A Spacious Interior And City

With the shift to crossovers and smaller SUVs, it is appropriate that the 2010 Jeep Patriot sits on a car platform. It is mechanically similar to both the more softly styled Jeep Compass and the more carlike Dodge Caliber, but the Patriot gets boxier, chunkier styling that both looks better and is more functional than either of its platform-mates.

For 2010, the Jeep Patriot remains relatively untouched compared to last years model. For this year, we see the return of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 158 horsepower in the base Patriot Sport 4×2, but it still provides barely adequate performance. The 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that’s included in the rest of the line is considerably more energetic but not peppy. Both are offered with a five-speed manual or CVT automatic, and the Patriot can be had with either front- or all-wheel drive. Both engines can be very loud during hard acceleration with the CVT, as it allows the engine to rev near redline for a sustained period. This is still the case, even though the Patriot received a number of small changes last year to combat this issue, including a new engine compartment and interior floor insulation to reduce noise.

Are Jeep Patriots Reliable

While its not the most reliable crossover SUV on the market, the Patriot is decently reliable enough. There are numerous issues that plague this car, although most of those problems are relatively minor. This is made somewhat easier by the fact the cost of ownership, maintenance, and repairs on the Patriot are fairly affordable. Therefore, the Patriot is a comparatively cheap car to drive and to repair if anything goes wrong for the most part. Based on RepairPals most recent surveys, the Patriot is shown to suffer an average number of severe issues as its competitors, as well as a similar number of times that theyll have to visit a workshop. Its running costs are just about average, with a yearly cost of around $600.

Is Jeep A Good Car

Jeeps are certainly great cars to buy, although whether or not its suitable for you, depends on your use case. If youre thinking about off-roading, then few could ever beat a Jeep, and even the base-tier and cheapest Jeeps can handily tackle tough terrain. Moreover, Jeeps are also perfect if youre looking for a decent daily runabout, with just as much real-world performance and practicality as youll ever need. With a mix of rugged capability, easy-going nature, and immense practicality, Jeeps are a good pairing with a lot of people. However, Jeeps also have their downsides. Certain models, especially their off-road-focused ones like the Wrangler, arent the most comfortable or refined cars to drive. Plus, Jeep has long had a questionable reputation for reliability.

Problems With Jeep Patriot

To have a better understanding of Jeep Patriot problems, well look through each model year. This goes from its first year on sale in 2007 and onwards. In a nutshell, the most serious of the Jeep Patriot problems that you need to be concerned about is the transmission. The Jeep Patriot uses what it calls the Freedom Drive. This is its 4WD system, connected to a Jatco-built CVT, continuously variable transmission. Using this, it can simulate the low-range modes you get with a dedicated transfer case.

Therefore, you can more or less get a proper off-road experience with a simple road-going gearbox. However, this CVT has proven to be prone to failure and unreliability, even with regular servicing. This is the most severe fault listed by CarComplaints.com and several other repair sites such as RepairPal. Other than transmission-related issues, the Jeep Patriot is also subject to leaking. Some of the seals along with the windows, roof, sunroof, and so on could fail over time, causing water to leak into the cabin.

Those two the gearbox and leaking are the most commonly reported issues for the Patriot. That said, there are other small issues that continue to plague owners of the Patriot. Here is a list of the Jeep Patriot problems, in greater detail

If You Can Live With The Unsophisticated And Rather Sluggish Powertrain Performance There’s A Lot Left To Like About The 2010 Jeep Patriot It Handles Well And There’s Some Off

For 2010, the Jeep Patriot remains relatively untouched compared to last years model. For this year, we see the return of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 158 horsepower in the base Patriot Sport 4×2, but it still provides barely adequate performance. The 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that’s included in the rest of the line is considerably more energeticbut still not peppy. Both are offered with a five-speed manual or CVT automatic, and the Patriot can be had with either front- or all-wheel drive.

In fact, acceleration can be a chore, rather than a joy with the CVT powertrain. Edmunds explains that “when equipped with the CVT, the Patriot accelerates sluggishly compared with other compact SUVs, and the lack of fixed ratios keeps the revs on a noisy boil.” ConsumerGuide concurs, reporting that there is adequate pull from a stop with either transmission, though models with the CVT struggle in passing and merging.”

Unlike some SUVs and larger vehicles in general, the 2010 Patriot is easy to drive and park, thanks to its compact-car size and well-defined corners. Although the body leans some, it doesn’t seem out of place on a curvy road and offers good, communicative steering. According to Edmunds, “the 2010 Jeep Patriot shows some body roll, but overall the Patriot takes corners confidently with a firm and controlled ride.” ConsumerGuide describes the on-road ride as “comfortable and stable” and the steering as “accurate and natural-feeling.”

The 2010 Jeep Patriot Has Plenty Of Interior And Cargo Space Thanks To The Boxy Shape But It Lags Behind Virtually All Vehicles In This Class Due To Its Plasticky Interior And Unrefined Feel

Here’s Why This Jeep Compass is Crap

The Patriots seating is well laid out, with ample space for four adults and good cargo space to boot. However the 2010 Patriot still isn’t quite up to the standards of other vehicles in this class for interior materials.

According to Cars.com, “Two rows of seats provide room for five occupants” are offered. ConsumerGuide says, “High-mounted seats contribute to generous legroom,” while Edmunds remarks, “those of taller stature will appreciate this SUV’s voluminous headroom.” Seating is well designed front seats aren’t that supportive, but due to the boxy design, there’s plenty of headroom, plus even more headroom and legroom in back for adults. However, the Patriot wont be perfect for taking five people on a long trip just two adults will fit comfortably in the 2010 Jeep Patriot, due to the narrow body and lack of shoulder room.

Although it has the style and proportions of larger Jeeps, the 2010 Jeep Patriot still can’t compare to bigger sport utilities when it comes to cargo capacity. Edmunds simply refers to its cargo capacity as “subpar, while Cars.com explains that “with the front passenger seat and rear seats folded…the Patriot can hold an 8-foot ladder.” Thus, with its folding rear seat and folding passenger seat, the Jeep Patriot does provide cargo space, but at the temporary expense of passenger room.

Which Jeep Patriot Years Are Safe To Buy Used

Now that weve wrapped up the Jeep Patriot years to avoid, lets make a quick list of the ones that should be safe to buy as used.

2007 Jeep Patriot

The 2007 Jeep Patriot has successfully carved a little niche for itself. With a low base price and decent off-road capabilities, the 2007 Patriot is a solid choice if youre looking for an older used model. It does have several reliability problems like control arm failure and stalling. Still, theyre not significant compared to the problematic years listed above.

Car buying can occasionally be frustrating, especially if youre purchasing your vehicle through a dealership. Were here to tell you how to navigate a situation in which a dealer refuses to cancel your extended warranty.

2017 Jeep Patriot

Perhaps the best year for the Jeep Patriot is the 2017 version – the last Patriot model before its unfortunate discontinuation. The 2017 is the model year where Jeep has got a lot of things right with this lineup, such as a robust set of features, good reliability scores , and decent safety ratings.

The 2017 model year does have some familiar reliability woes like the leaky sunroof, but theyre not as severe and few and far between.
