US defense officials warn of the increasing threat of cyberattacks on the nations power grid, natural gas pipelines, and other strategic infrastructure, but what do the two political parties and their candidates know about these threats and what will they do to thwart them?
The US could be hit with a “cyber Pearl Harbor,” Defense Secretary Leon Panetta acknowledged in a June Senate hearing. Gen. Keith Alexander, who heads the Pentagon‘s new US Cyber Command, warned at a security conference in July that on a 1-to-10 scale, American readiness for a major cyberattack is around a 3.
Both political parties do recognize, at least, that such threats are quickly becoming a major new US national security problem for the 21st century as warnings buried deep in their respective political platforms acknowledge.
The Democratic platform, on page 60, spends not quite 200 words on cybersecurity, with the GOP giving the topic twice as much space on pages 41-42. The Democratic script cites “unprecedented steps” taken by the Obama administration to defend America from cyberattacks, including creating the military’s new Cyber Command.

What Is The Current State Of American Cyber Security
Is the U.S. winning the war to protect data? According to Rob Joyce, the National Security Agencys senior adviser on cyber security strategy, the trend is going the wrong way. In a live interview held at the WSJ Pro Cyber security Executive Forum, Mr. Joyce was asked by WSJ reporter Robert McMillan, in front of an audience of security experts and business leaders, about what the U.S.s current status regarding cyber security was. Its not getting better, its getting worse, Mr. Joyce said as he urged firms to be more vigilant in protecting applications, systems, and infrastructure. During the interview Mr. Joyce routinely referenced the 2016 election cycle, which investigators later found was interfered with by hackers, and said there are already signs which indicate hackers will use more sophisticated tactics to interfere in the 2020 elections.

Joe Biden said his administration has been in constant contact with our counterparts in the Middle East amid the attacks in Gaza.
The president said he spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the White House will soon release a readout of that call.
My hope is that well see this coming to a conclusion sooner than later, Biden said. He added that Israel has a right to defend itself.
The death toll in Gaza has risen to 53, and Israel has vowed it will not stop its attacks until complete quiet has been achieved.

Raking over the platforms’ statements for shreds of meaning, cyberexperts were alternatively impressed and depressed.

“The Obama administration, from the beginning, has implemented aggressive cyberwarfare deployments against Iran,” writes John Michener, chief scientist at Casaba, a cybersecurity firm that works with Microsoft and others, in an e-mail interview. The Democratic platform does not talk about this and properly so. Cyberwarfare is typically very covert. Overt cyberwarfare is more likely to be responded to by more overt measures.”

An inmate who spent 22 years in solitary confinement in an Illinois prison after being arrested for stealing a hat and a dollar bill is campaigning for legislation to end a practice that he says drove him to self-mutilation and a suicide attempt.
Anthony Gay said he was tortured for decades by his isolation for up to 24 hours a day in a cold, tiny cell he likened to a dungeon, and was denied access to necessary mental health care.
His efforts since his 2018 release to outlaw the procedure as a punitive measure is reflected in a bill that bears his name now making its way through the Illinois legislature.
I know what its like to be tortured and I know that many people are still being tortured, he said in an interview with ABC News.
And I feel guilty because I got out and they didnt. But if we can inform more people, and more people become aware that strength is in numbers, compel them to do something about it. Its wrong, despicable and horrible, and it needs to stop.

Tampering With Voting Records
Officials are concerned that hackers may attempt to alter voting records to sow confusion about voting permissions. In order to vote in most states, individuals must have their name, home address, and party affiliation details on file, in a voter-registration database, before they can cast a ballot. These databases are rarely connected to the machines that count votes, but election officials are concerned that hackers may try to breach these databases in an effort to change the data inside: if hackers could alter voters registration status, such would surely cause a lot of confusion at polling places. A Senate Intelligence Committee report from 2017 concluded that Russian hackers successfully accessed voter-registration data in a number of states during the 2016 election cycleevidence that any of this data was altered has still yet to be found. Russian officials have maintained a position of denial since the original allegations of interference broke, and President Vladimir Putin has called Russian use of fraudulent social media accounts to undermine the 2016 elections a fallacy.

Cyber security has become an important issue in the past couple years, in large part because of events involving election meddling and hacking which took place during the 2016 election cycle. While calls to improve cyber security in the US have come from both sides of the aisle, Republicans have been talking about the issue long before 2016. Republicans, particularly those who are hawkish on foreign policy, have been concerned about cyber security for a long time: there were numerous instances before 2016 where the US government, US businesses, and US banking institutions had their systems breached by foreign actors, and in almost all cases the hackers were operating inside countries the US has historically had an adversarial relationship with: Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran being the most well known. Many Republicans have accused President Trump of being too friendly with leaders like Russian president Vladimir Putin and Chinese president Xi Jinping, two men a plurality of Republican lawmakers believe have personally had a hand in directing cyberattacks against US entities. Less than a month before he was elected president, Donald Trump promised to make cybersecurity an immediate and top priority for my administration. He had talked about technology often on the campaign trailmostly to attack Hillary Clinton for using a private email server when she was Secretary of State. But less than two weeks into his presidency, its Trump and his team who have struggled to plug important security holes, some of which are reminiscent of Clintons troubles.
Rather than sparking an uproar, the problems have largely been buried the by other changes and crises of the Trump administrations first days. WASHINGTON – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he and Russia’s president had discussed forming a cyber security unit, an idea harshly criticized by Republicans who said Moscow could not be trusted after its alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.
Tweeting after his first meeting with President Vladimir Putin on Friday, Trump said now was the time to work constructively with Moscow, pointing to a ceasefire deal in southwest Syria that came into effect on Sunday.
“Putin & I discussed forming an impenetrable Cyber Security unit so that election hacking, & many other negative things, will be guarded and safe,” he said following their talks at a summit of the Group of 20 nations in Hamburg, Germany.
Republican Senators Lindsey Graham, an influential South Carolina Republican who is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Marco Rubio of Florida, who opposed Trump for their party’s presidential nomination, blasted the idea.
“It’s not the dumbest idea I have ever heard but it’s pretty close,” Graham told NBC’s “Meet the Press” program, saying that Trump’s apparent willingness to “forgive and forget” stiffened his resolve to pass legislation imposing sanctions on Russia.
Rubio, on Twitter, said: “While reality & pragmatism requires that we engage Vladimir Putin, he will never be a trusted ally or a reliable constructive partner.
“Partnering with Putin on a ‘Cyber Security Unit’ is akin to partnering with Assad on a ‘Chemical Weapons Unit’,” he added.
