Republican Mitt Romney agrees with the principle that having all citizens insured would benefit the country as a whole, but points out that a government mandate is not the most efficient way to do this. During his time as governor of Massachusetts, Romney created a health insurance program that was incredibly successful, and that he believes could be a good model for national reform. Those who opposed the reform made claims that the reform created uncontrollable costs within Massachusetts, but the Massachusetts Taxpayer Foundation, a non-partisan group, has since deemed these claims a myth. The Foundations report stated that the cost to taxpayers of achieving near universal coverage has been relatively modest and well within initial projections of how much the state would have to spend to implement reform, in part because many of the newly insured have enrolled in employer-sponsored plans at no public expense. In terms of national health care reform, Romney argues that the government should center reforms at the state level. Open the door to state plans designed to meet the various needs of their citizens. Before imposing a one-size-fits-all federal program, let the states serve as the laboratories of democracy. Romney also supports a utilization of innovations such as electronic medical records to streamline record keeping and make it more efficient to reduce costs.
Securing Reproductive Health Rights And Justice
Democrats are committed to protecting and advancing reproductive health, rights, and justice. We believe unequivocally, like the majority of Americans, that every woman should be able to access high-quality reproductive health care services, including safe and legal abortion. We will repeal the Title X domestic gag rule and restore federal funding for Planned Parenthood, which provides vital preventive and reproductive health care for millions of people, especially low-income people, and people of color, and LGBTQ+ people, including in underserved areas.
Democrats oppose and will fight to overturn federal and state laws that create barriers to reproductive health and rights. We will repeal the Hyde Amendment, and protect and codify the right to reproductive freedom. We condemn acts of violence, harassment, and intimidation of reproductive health providers, patients, and staff. We will address the discrimination and barriers that inhibit meaningful access to reproductive health care services, including those based on gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, income, disability, geography, and other factors. Democrats oppose restrictions on medication abortion care that are inconsistent with the most recent medical and scientific evidence and that do not protect public health.

Strengthening And Supporting The Health Care Workforce
The COVID-19 pandemic has made plain to people across the country that our health care workers are heroes. Our doctors and nurses, our home health aides and physicians assistants, our public health professionals, our home care workers and nursing home workers, and our cleaners and service workers have shown up to work every day despite dire shortages of personal protective equipment. Far too many of them have lost their lives to this terrible disease, and untold thousands are suffering the mental and emotional strain of losing far too many patients. And yet, despite the critical role they play in our society and our economy, these frontline workersa majority of whom are women of colorare often underpaid and lack access to paid sick days, paid family and medical leave, health insurance, and other benefits critical for their own health and the health of patients.
Democrats believe that all jobs in the caring economy must come with family-sustaining wages, good benefits, access to paid leave, fair and predictable schedules, access to training and professional development, and the ability to join a union and collectively bargain. We believe all employers funded by taxpayer dollars must pay their workers at least $15 an hour and protect workers rights to organize.
The Need For Competition
Many conservatives believe families, individuals and businesses should be able to purchase health insurance nationwide to heighten competition for their business and provide a variety of choices.
Further, individuals should be permitted to obtain insurance privately or through organizations of their choice: employers, churches, professional associations or others. Such policies would automatically bridge the gap between retirement and Medicare eligibility and cover multiple years.
More choices in coverage is just one aspect of a free-market health care system. Another is allowing consumers to shop for treatment options. This would promote competition between conventional and alternative providers and make patients the center of care. Permitting providers to practice nationwide also would build genuine national markets and give consumers greater responsibility in their own health care decisions.
Competition ensures the public is better educated about preventive health care and treatment options. It forces providers to be more transparent regarding medical outcomes, quality of care and the costs of treatment.
It also means more competitive pricing. Lesser quality providers get weeded out, becauselike elsewhere in the free-market economythey get priced out of malpractice insurance and have no way to raise their prices. Developing national standards of care to measure and record treatments and outcomes ensures only top-quality providers remain in business.

When the three senators released their proposal, Burr stated The American people have found out what is in ObamaCare broken promises in the form of increased health care costs, costly mandates and government bureaucracy. We can lower costs and expand access to quality coverage and care by empowering individuals and their families to make their own health care decisions, rather than empowering the government to make those decisions for them. The group stated that their proposal is designed to be roughly budget neutral over the first 10 years, leaving the financial burden on the American people at nothing. Coburn commented that they created this proposal because Its critical we chart another path forward. Our health care system wasnt working well before ObamaCare and it is worse after ObamaCare.

The NBC News/Commonwealth Fund Health Care Poll was conducted by SSRS from January 28 through February 16, 2020. The survey consisted of telephone interviews conducted among a random, nationally representative sample of 2,303 adults, age 18 and older, living in the United States, and included an oversample of African Americans and Hispanics. Overall, 686 interviews were completed via landline and 1,617 were conducted via mobile phone. For this analysis, the sample population was limited to adults who reported they would definitely vote in the 2020 presidential election . The final sample size among likely voters was 1,594.
This is the first poll in a series to track public sentiment on a range of health care issues during the 2020 presidential election season. Data were collected through the SSRS Omnibus. The SSRS Omnibus uses a fully-replicated, stratified, single-stage, random-digit-dialing sample of telephone households, and randomly generated cell phones.
The margin of error is +/ 2.4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level. The landline portion of the survey achieved a 5.4 percent response rate and the cellular phone component achieved a 3.1 percent response rate. The overall response rate was 3.8 percent.

Health care is, yet again, one of the most important issues facing policymakers this election season. National Taxpayers Union has a stake in federal and state health policy for several reasons, chief among them that good health policy can foster innovation for consumers and cost savings to major federal- and state-run health programs for taxpayers.
What follows is an analysis of the 2020 Democratic Party platform on health care and the 2020 Trump campaign second-term agenda on health care . We will follow up with some NTU suggestions for pro-growth, pro-taxpayer alternatives that could serve either party well in 2021 and beyond.
% Of Republicans Support Universal Health Care
Overall, 31% of all survey respondents say healthcare in the U.S. should be delivered via a single government-run system, a proposal often known as universal health care.
This idea has higher support among Democrats, as the partys progressive stalwarts have been advocating for expanding the governments role in providing healthcare for decades. Forty percent of Democratic voters we surveyed say they believe healthcare should be provided through a single government-run program.
However, in a more surprising finding, 25% of all Republicans also choose this as their preferred method of healthcare delivery.
