The Patriots Had A Chance Of Heart On Trading Sony Michel Because Of A Stacked Rb Room
The Patriots didnt want to trade Michel. He appeared more explosive than he has ever looked and seemed to be more valuable to the team than what hed net in a trade . Alas, rookie Rhamondre Stevenson looked even more well-rounded than the Patriots could have anticipated and J.J. Taylor continued his emergence. With Damien Harris, James White and Brandon Bolden fixed into their roles, the Patriots must have felt OK moving on from Michel.
Jones’ Speedy Development Has Put Newton In An Uncomfortable Position But You’d Never Know It
The only time where it seemed Newton was feeling external pressure or lack of support was when he posted Loyalty I deserve it on social media. Newton later said that post had nothing to do with the quarterback competition. He has been nothing but supportive of Jones, whether in press conferences, meetings or on the field.
All the while, Newton has managed to put himself just ahead of Jones for the starting job. If the Patriots pick Newton as QB1, fans should have confidence hell do a good job with the offense.

The 2021 Patriots Can
Theres enough talent on this roster for the Patriots to make the playoffs. After Belichick spent money at a clip which New England has never seen and perhaps even made owner Robert Kraft a little nervous the Patriots should make the playoffs. Of course, free agency spending cant buy a playoff bid. History has made that clear. But with a strong coaching staff and a hugely improved roster, the Patriots should be much better than their 7-9 roster from 2020.

Patriots Training Camp Notebook: Deep Ball Driven Day 13
Sunday morning, the Patriots held their first practice since Thursday nights preseason opener, and their only practice of the week in Foxborough. Following the session the team left for Philadelphia, where theyll have joint practices with the Eagles Monday and Tuesday leading into Thursdays preseason game.
Before practice, Bill Belichick told the media the purpose of Sundays practice was to clean up some things on our end and then be ready to go tomorrow morning. Most of the morning was spent in team drills, with a seemingly heavy focus on the passing game.

Although the tempo wasnt as high as it has been in other practices, there were still a few noticeable deep ball connections. The play of the day came late in practice, when Mac Jones lofted a fade to Isaiah Zuber in the front corner of the end zone. Zuber was able to turn all the way around and grab the ball over Justin Bethel for the touchdown.
Jones also hit a pair of deep throws up the seam to Kristian Wilkerson. It was a bounce-back day for Wilkerson with a couple of catches, after an up-and-down preseason debut.
Cam Newton, who worked mostly with the first team offense, got in on the action as well. His throw of the day came during a two-minute drill, hitting Nelson Agholor on a deep crosser on the second play of the drive.

The Patriots Might Not Have Enough Talent At Inside Linebacker
The Patriots have a weird setup at inside linebacker, where their starters are Donta Hightower and JaWhaun Bentley. Then the backups are just the outside linebackers, like Van Noy and Jennings.
That could work. But the Patriots may want to acquire a workable inside linebacker at the 53-man roster cut, if thats possible. Even if they stash someone on the practice squad, theyd probably be happy.

Adam Butler Defensive Tackle
An undrafted rookie, Jackson played with the first-team defense during the 2018 minicamp. He finished with two interceptions in that preseason and its been no surprise that he looks like one of the best young corners in the game.
Butler also was playing with the first-team defense in training camp. He had a sack and two quarterback hits that preseason. He was one of the Patriots’ best interior pass rushers over the last four years before signing with Miami this offseason.
Josh Mcdaniels Is Doing An Impressive Job Of Preparing Two Quarterbacks
The Patriots are running slightly different offenses for Newton and Jones, and Ive been impressed at how McDaniels can flip between quarterbacks, whether its coaching or play-calling. The offensive coordinator is clearly favoring Jones when it comes to on-field coaching. That much was clear at practice. Its also notable that McDaniels stopped shadowing Jones as training camp went on. Jones clearly didnt need as much coaching.

Jakobi Meyers Is Wr1 He’s Also Probably The Top Pass
Meyers has been a stud in training camp. He gets volume. Hes made acrobatic catches. Maybe he wont put up many touchdowns in 2021 he had zero last season, after all but Meyers will be the man who consistently moves the chains for the Patriots. He could legitimately catch 100 passes this year.
The problem is that we havent seen the same level of promise from other pass-catchers.

With only one full week of practice before their first preseason game against Washington, expect to see them in pads at some point this week with the earliest possible day coming on Tuesday. The league limits every team to 16 days in pads and is not to exceed three consecutive days. In addition, every team must abide by an acclimation period when starting camp which the Patriots will come out of starting on Tuesday.
In addition, the general public will be welcome to the stadium for practice on August 10th just two days before the first preseason game and a week before the first mandated roster cutdown.

Second-year back Stevan Ridley was the headliner but Bolden stood out as an undrafted free agent in 2012. He made the team and, nine years later, is still in New England and has two Super Bowl rings.
Cunningham, in his third NFL season, looked dominant, finishing with two sacks and six quarterback hits in the 2012 preseason. He never lived up to that hype or his second-round draft status. He played in two games in 2013 and then was out of the NFL.

One-If-By-Sea said:What round would you select a tackle and interior OL in? What other positions do not get picked so we can pick 2 OL? Not including the 6th and 7th rounds, we only have 4 selections I think. Talking about part of the draft without a complete picture can be misleading.
One-If-By-Sea said:I don’t think we have a 5th rounder . So if we go DL Rd 1, and OT Rd 2, that pushes CB to Rd 3 and WR to Rd 4? So no LB. No FS. Maybe a 7th and UDFAs but we can not expect them to perform Y1.
One-If-By-Sea said:I agree. I agree so much I would swap out the OT in Rd 2 for a CB, and Rd 3 would be a 2nd DL. Watching the 49ers, Bills, and Rams on the DL, I think we need a couple more DL guys.

New England Patriots Training Camp Questions: Cam Newton Or Mac Jones
Jeff Saturday puts pressure on the Patriots’ offense after a disappointing 2020 season.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The New England Patriots open 2021 NFL training camp Wednesday at Gillette Stadium. Here’s a closer look at a few storylines:
Does Mac Jones show enough to make it a real competition with Cam Newton for the starting quarterback job?
Coach Bill Belichick highlighted arguably the biggest question facing the Patriots when he said in April: “Cam’s our quarterback. Whatever time Jarrett or Mac are ready to challenge and compete, then we’ll see how that goes.”
Jones impressed players and coaches in spring practices, when the focus was more on teaching than evaluation, by keeping pace mentally and seldom making the same mistake twice. So he’s established a solid foundation to compete for the top job in training camp, when it’s more about evaluation and the pace in which the team moves increases significantly.
Once Jones takes the reins, it’s hard to imagine the Patriots turning back to Newton. They’re all-in at that point. So one would think if it’s close between Newton and Jones, it will tilt the needle more toward Newton.
Thus, Jones will have to decisively prove he has made the progress necessary — which includes three preseason games and the possibility of multiple joint practices — to win the job.
Does cornerback Stephon Gilmore play with a $7 million base salary, and if so, how unhappy is he?
Top Story Lines Heading Into Camp

Whoâs behind center?
Itâs clear the Patriots need better play at quarterback. Cam Newton struggled mightily in 2020. His supporters point out that he did not have much time to get acclimated to his new team after signing with the Patriots late last June, and he did not have the benefit of a normal preseason because the exhibition schedule was canceled.
He also did not appear to have much to work with, particularly once receiver Julian Edelman went down for the season. A pair of rookie tight ends also could not stay on the field. Newton managed eight touchdown passes in 15 games, and his lack of accuracy was a big concern.
With Newton having the benefit of a full offseason in the organization, as well as an upgrade at tight end and wide receiver, coach Bill Belichick appears inclined to give him another chance he affirmed Newton as âour quarterbackâ on the night of the draft. But the selection of Alabama quarterback Mac Jones with the 15th pick could mean the veteran is on a short leash, particularly if Jones performs well in camp.
Will the big spending pay off?
Typically not ones to splurge in free agency, the Patriots signed the top two tight ends on the market in Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry. Wide receivers Kendrick Bourne and Nelson Agholor also were added. How quickly will those new weapons get acclimated to the offense?
Happy returns at linebacker?
Unhappy Gilmore
