WASHINGTON, Oct 8 Senator Mitch McConnell, long known as the Republican mastermind in Congress, lost support among some members of his own party this week after offering Democrats a temporary deal to avert a cataclysmic U.S. credit default and safeguard the Senates endangered super-majority rule.

The 79-year-old Kentucky Republican, who had insisted for months that Democrats use a complex procedure to raise the debt ceiling on their own, offered a temporary fix to extend it into early December after the U.S. Treasury said it would run out of money to pay its bills by Oct. 18.

Democrats readily agreed and declared victory after the agreement passed the Senate by a 50-48 majority on Thursday.

Somebody got to McConnell and finally said: Hey Mitch, you know what, are you really prepared to sink the entire American economy and the global economy with your obstinacy?’ Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, told reporters on Friday.

While the deal simply postpones the same battle, McConnells decision to relent raised questions about whether he had put himself at a disadvantage in future confrontations.

WASHINGTON, Oct 8 – One day after the Senate approved a temporary lift to the U.S. debt ceiling, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell wrote in a letter to President Joe Biden that he would not aid Democrats again in raising the debt limit.

Following weeks of partisan fighting, the Senate approved the short-term fix that will allow the United States to avoid defaulting on its bills in a 50-48 vote on Thursday evening. The House will vote on the measure on Tuesday.

Congress will need to find a longer-term solution in December. But McConnell has said the reprieve would give Democrats enough time to raise the debt ceiling through a procedural move known as reconciliation, which Democrats have rejected as an option for lifting the cap.

In his letter to Biden, McConnell referenced comments on the Senate floor on Thursday by Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, who said Republicans had played a “dangerous and risky partisan game.”

“I am writing to make it clear that in light of Senator Schumer’s hysterics and my grave concerns about the ways that another vast, reckless, partisan spending bill would hurt Americans and help China, I will not be a party to any future effort to mitigate the consequences of Democratic mismanagement,” McConnell wrote.

The activists have been a regular presence on Pennsylvania Avenue, putting visible pressure on the White House. Most acknowledged that the voting rights legislation had little chance of passage without filibuster changes.

“I think what Joe Biden understands is the filibuster is not written into the Constitution. It is tradition. And tradition evolves and changes,” said Joseph Geevarghese, the executive director of Our Revolution, a group aligned with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent. Geevarghese said that if Congress can’t find a way to pass voting rights, the consequences could be stark for Democrats.

Schumer Poisoned Well Over Debt Limit Mcconnell Says In Insult

Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, sought to fight his way out of a corner on Friday by releasing an angry letter in which he blamed Democrats for the impasse over the debt ceiling he broke by ending a refusal to co-operate he had said was absolute.

In the letter to Joe Biden, McConnell complained about a speech in which the Democratic majority leader, Chuck Schumer, attacked Republicans for their behaviour.

Lamenting Schumers lack of civility which prompted angry scenes in the Senate McConnell levelled a string of insults at his opposite number.

Last night, the minority leader wrote, late on Friday, in a bizarre spectacle, Senator Schumer exploded in a rant that was so partisan, angry and corrosive that even Democratic senators were visibly embarrassed by him and for him.

This tantrum encapsulated and escalated a pattern of angry incompetence from Senator Schumer this childish behavior only further alienated the Republican members who helped facilitate this short-term patch. It has poisoned the well even further.

Democrats argue it was McConnell who poisoned the well by refusing to co-operate with raising the debt limit, a step they took repeatedly with Donald Trump in power. Experts say a US default would be catastrophic for the global economy.

McConnell also spoke to Biden, media outlets reported.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman on Monday said Sen. Joe Manchin has become the new Mitch McConnell, denouncing the West Virginia Democrat for maintaining his support of the legislative filibuster while opposing his partys expansive election and ethics reform bill.

In an interview on CNN, Bowman invoked past comments by McConnell that cast the Republican Senate leader as a partisan obstructionist to the agendas of former President Barack Obama and President Joe Biden.

Now, Bowman said, Joe Manchin is doing everything in his power to stop democracy and to stop our work for the people, the work that the people sent us here to do.

A spokesperson for Manchin did not immediately return a request for comment on Bowmans criticism.

The remarks from Bowman a progressive freshman lawmaker who in 2020 displaced then-Rep. Eliot Engel, a more moderate 16-term incumbent come after Manchin on Sunday authored an op-ed in the Charleston Gazette-Mail announcing he would not back the election reform bill.

The Freedom to Vote Act was negotiated by a group of Senate Democrats, including Manchin, who was his partys lone holdout on the sweeping voting rights measure that passed the House earlier this year. Parts of the House-passed bill, called the For the People Act, were scaled back to win over Manchins support, as well as some Republicans. Manchin played a key role in courting Republican support for the compromise bill in recent weeks.

“Now that they’ve kicked the can down the road, I’m a little unclear how Democrats intend to proceed from here on out,” said Jim Manley, a former Senate Democratic leadership aide.

Democratic leaders say McConnell’s blink at the brink he helped provide the procedural votes to allow Democrats to raise the debt ceiling by $480 billion portends a second fold in December. In offering a deal last week, he backed down from his previous insistence that Democrats use a partisan budget tool called “reconciliation” to lift the cap without Republican support.

The majority leader usually works closely with the minority leader so that, as Senator Bob Dole explained, we never surprise each other on the floor. The party leaders meet frequently with the president and with the leaders of the House of Representatives. The majority leader also greets foreign dignitaries visiting the Capitol.

Opinion: Mitch Mcconnell Still The Crucial Republican Leader

Sen. Mitch McConnell will remain majority leader until noon on Jan. 20, with the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden. At that moment, McConnell will then become the equal in influence of any minority leader in Senate history. No doubt he is already planning how to wield that power for the GOP and the good of the country.

As I have noted before, rule-of-law conservatives owe an enormous debt to McConnell for protecting the Constitution and its separation of powers, checks on administrative agencies and robust individual rights, particularly those of free exercise of religion, speech and property.

In 2016, McConnell refused to be railroaded by the chattering class into consenting to President Barack Obamas filling of the Supreme Court vacancy caused by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. Again defying liberals condemnation, McConnell joined with then-Senate Judiciary Chairman Charles E. Grassley in 2018 and Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey O. Graham in 2020 in guiding the Supreme Court nominations of Justices Brett M. Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett to confirmation. McConnell has also kept a laser focus on the appointments of appeals court judges, ensuring that the Constitutions protections of American freedoms will be preserved for decades.

The only thing that can deeply injure the Republicans is division. And the partys unity is essential in an increasingly unstable era at home and abroad.
