Michelle Wu Wins Boston Mayoral Race
Michelle Wu, 36, won a hotly contested mayoral race in Boston after fellow council member and Democrat Annissa Essaibi George conceded Tuesday. Wu gained 56% of votes compared to 43% for George.
Wu is a Harvard Law graduate who served on the council since 2014. She is the first woman and first woman of color elected mayor of the commonwealth capital, breaking a streak of white male city leaders.
Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey, along with Rep. Ayanna Pressley, all from Massachusetts, campaigned with Wu, along with acting Boston Mayor Kim Janey. Janey, a Black woman, was appointed after previously elected mayor Marty Walsh stepped down to become secretary of Labor under President Joe Biden.

National Picture Looms Over Youngkin
National politics may have played a big part in drawing some voters in Centreville out to the Virginia gubernatorial election.
Im kind of looking at the whole picture in terms of the country, not only in Virginia, said Bradley Clark, an occupational therapist from Fairfax, as his toddler ran in circles around the entrance to the polling place at Centre Ridge Elementary School in Fairfax County.
Clark wants his votes to help ensure that the state continues staying Democratic but also wants Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe to push for progressive policies on the national level. Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin, on the other hand, is more of a pro-Trump kind of candidate.
I really think thats the wrong direction for Virginia, but also for the country as a whole.
But these voters disagree about which direction Virginia and the country should be led in.
Larry Parthum, an Air Force analyst from Centreville, trusts Youngkin to advocate and legislate against abortion and said he thinks that McAuliffe is a substitute for Hilary Clinton, given McAuliffes longstanding political relationship with the Clintons and other prominent Democrats.

Democratic Ideological Factions Face Off In Cities
Several municipal races pitted the progressive and moderate wings of the Democratic Party. The contests offered mixed results.
In Buffalo, India Walton, who was seeking to become a rare democratic socialist elected to a mayoralty, was trailing the write-in campaign led by Mayor Byron Brown, whom she had defeated in the Democratic primary.
In Minneapolis, voters rejected an amendment to transform the citys Police Department into a new Department of Public Safety. At the same time, the citys moderate Democratic incumbent mayor, Jacob Frey, held a significant advantage after the first round of ranked-choice voting.
In Seattle, Bruce Harrell, a former City Council president, was leading his more progressive rival, Lorena González.
The left did score some wins. In Boston, Michelle Wu, who was running with the backing of progressives, won the mayors race. And in Cleveland, Justin Bibb, a 34-year-old with progressive backing, is set to become mayor as well.
CHANTILLY, Va. Glenn Youngkin spoke publicly for the first time since his upset victory in the Virginia governors race was called by The Associated Press early Wednesday morning.
We won this thing, Mr. Youngkin said after bounding out onstage in Chantilly just after 1 a.m., clapping along to the blues-rock anthem Spirit in the Sky.

In the month of June, Pompeo tweeted the word pipehitter 18 times, and his political action committee CAVPAC short for Champion American Values PAC tweeted pipehitter another 16 times. Be a pipehitter, read one. All of us need to be Pipehitters. If youre a Pipehitter like us, join the team. What the heck is a pipehitter, though?
The word refers to members of special forces, though it has other slang definitions not suitable for a family news website, which inspired mockery online and from Stephen Colbert. According to Pompeo, though, a pipehitter is basically a Pompeo super fan. Facebook ads run by CAVPAC in Pompeos home state of Kansas and the four early primary/caucus states define pipehitter as someone who is unapologetically American, someone who fights for our future, someone who never gives an inch, someone who is dedicated to stand against the radical Lefts agenda.
In non-pipehitter news, a recent joint investigation by The New York Times and ProPublica found Pompeo has been the subject of Chinese propaganda campaign that included coordinated videos of Uyghurs calling Pompeos accusations of Chinese human rights abuses false. In January, the State Department declared that the Chinese Communist Party was committing genocide against Muslim Uyghurs and other minorities in Xinjiang, and Pompeo called it the stain of the century.
The 2024 Republican Presidential Candidate Wild Cards
The first Democratic debate back in 2019 had 20 TWENTY! candidates, so dont be surprised if the Republican field is just as large or larger. We could have some more governors or representatives run, or even other nontraditional candidates, like a Trump family member, a Fox News host or a celebrity, like Dwayne The Rock Johnson, whos said hes seriously considering a run. School board races dont normally generate much excitement, but around the country this year theyve become flash points for controversy, drawing national advertising and outside money in what Republicans promoted as a blueprint for energizing suburban voters in next years midterm elections.
Yet Tuesdays results suggest that the school issues advanced by conservative candidates notably a rejection of race, diversity and inclusion lessons in schools might not be sure bet for swinging suburban voters red.
In one of the most contentious and closely-watched votes on Tuesday, incumbents in an affluent suburb of Milwaukee beat back a recall effort by a conservative slate of candidates who had attacked the districts efforts to teach racial equity and diversity.
The four incumbents on the Mequon-Thiensville School Board soundly defeated their Republican challengers by wide margins, final vote tallies showed. The results delivered a setback to the states Republicans, who had openly campaigned for the conservative slate of candidates in the attempted recall of the four school board members a departure from a Wisconsin tradition of nonpartisan school elections.
Among the groups most vocal Republican supporters was a former lieutenant governor, Rebecca Kleefisch, who has announced her candidacy for governor in 2022. Ms. Kleefisch had attended a campaign rally for the group last Friday.

With a little more than 34% of the vote counted in the New Jersey governor’s race, Republican Jack Ciattarelli has a slight lead over Democratic incumbent Gov. Phil Murphy.

While the Virginia governors race has been getting much of the national attention in the runup to Election Day, some other elections also could tell us more about what to expect in the 2022 midterm election.
Tigher-than-expected races for New Jersey governor and Ohios 15th congressional district could drop some hints about which way the political weather vane is pointing in 2022. Democrats will be trying to cling to their slim majority in the House next year.
Storming Of The Capitol
On January 6, 2021, while was taking place in the United States Capitol, Trump held a rally at , where he called for the election result to be overturned and urged his supporters to “take back our country” by marching to the Capitol to “show strength” and “fight like hell.” Trump’s speech started at noon. By 12:30 p.m., rally attendees had gathered outside the Capitol, and at 1 p.m, his supporters pushed past police barriers onto Capitol grounds. Trump’s speech ended at 1:10 p.m., the crowd grew larger as more supporters marched on the Capitol. Around 2:15 p.m. the mob broke into the building, disrupting certification and causing the evacuation of Congress. During the violence, Trump posted mixed messages on Twitter and Facebook, eventually tweeting to the rioters at 6 p.m, “go home with love & in peace”, but describing them as “great patriots” and “very special”, while still complaining that the election was stolen. After the mob was removed from the Capitol, Congress reconvened and confirmed the Biden election win in the early hours of the following morning. There were many injuries, and five people, including a Capitol Police officer, died.

Trump’s Purge Of Republican Party Scores Another Win
The GOP field features five other candidates who to varying degrees have aligned themselves with Trump and his allies in a race to succeed Sen. Rob Portman, a Republican who has decided not to seek another term next year. Josh Mandel, a former state treasurer venture capitalist JD Vance, the author of Hillbilly Elegy Jane Timken, the former chair of the Ohio Republican Party and Cleveland-area businessmen Mike Gibbons and Bernie Moreno have been eager to please Trump, hire his former aides and compete for his endorsement.
Trump has yet to back a candidate.
Dolan, a longtime state legislator whose family owns the Cleveland Indians, has at least one thing in common with his rivals: the potential to self-fund his campaign. He enters the race as a relative moderate. Even though his announcement video and statement and the homepage for his website boast of his conservative credentials, Trumps name or image are nowhere to be found. And the lead-up to Mondays announcement included several overt efforts to distinguish Dolan from the other candidates.
A Dolan aide sniped at Mandel in May for appearing at a local GOP event headlined by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla. On the recent listening tour, Dolan emphasized his support for the Senates bipartisan, $1 trillion infrastructure bill legislation that Trump and Dolans rivals say they oppose. The posture fits the pragmatic profile Dolan hopes to project.

Relationship With The Press
Throughout his career, Trump has sought media attention, with a “lovehate” relationship with the press. Trump began promoting himself in the press in the 1970s. Fox News anchor and former House speaker have characterized Trump as a “” who makes controversial statements to see people’s “heads explode.”
In the 2016 campaign, Trump benefited from a record amount of free media coverage, elevating his standing in the Republican primaries.New York Times writer wrote in 2018 that Trump’s media dominance, which enthralls the public and creates “can’t miss” reality television-type coverage, was politically beneficial for him.
As a candidate and as president, Trump frequently accused the press of bias, calling it the “fake news media” and “the .” In 2018, journalist recounted Trump’s saying he intentionally demeaned and discredited the media “so when you write negative stories about me no one will believe you.”
As president, Trump deployed the legal system to intimidate the press. In early 2020, the Trump campaign sued The New York Times, The Washington Post, and CNN for alleged defamation in opinion pieces about Russian election interference. Legal experts said that the lawsuits lacked merit and were not likely to succeed. By March 2021, the lawsuits against The New York Times and CNN had been dismissed.
Buffalos Race For Mayor Appears To Swing Toward The Write
BUFFALO, N.Y. Mayor Byron W. Brown of Buffalo, an incumbent four-term Democrat, declared victory on Tuesday night in his write-in campaign to defeat his own partys official nominee, India Walton. But Ms. Walton, a democratic socialist, refused to concede.
The political oddity of a potent write-in campaign and a battle pitting moderates versus progressives inside the Democratic Party turned this citys usually lackluster mayoral race into one of the most closely watched contests in the nation. A win for Mr. Brown the citys first Black mayor and a lifelong Democratic centrist would be a stinging rebuke for the progressive wing of his party, which had celebrated Ms. Waltons unlikely primary victory in June.
The results reported early on Wednesday by the Erie County Board of Elections underscored the Democrats ideological schism. With all precincts reporting, just over 41 percent of votes were for Ms. Walton and 58.3 percent were marked for write-in, or 23,986 to 34,273.
There is at least one other write-in candidate who has actively campaigned: Benjamin Carlisle, a former Democrat. Ballots marked write-in will have to be checked individually to see which candidate Mr. Brown, Mr. Carlisle, or others is indicated. And absentee ballots will not be tallied until mid-November.
Right now its Walton against Write In, whoever that is, she said. Who Write-In is remains to be seen.
