Rep Markwayne Mullin And A Former Oklahoma House Speaker Head To A Senate Runoff

Representative Markwayne Mullin and T.W. Shannon, a former speaker of the Oklahoma House, will advance to a runoff in the states special primary to replace Senator James M. Inhofe, who is retiring in January.

The two candidates prevailed over 10 other competitors, but neither cleared the 50 percent threshold necessary to advance directly to Novembers general election, according to The Associated Press.

Either Mr. Shannon or Mr. Mullin would, if elected in November, become the fifth senator in American history with documented Native American affiliation. Mr. Shannon is an enrolled member of the Chickasaw Nation, and Mr. Mullin is a member of the Cherokee Nation.

Mr. Mullin, 44, was first elected to represent eastern Oklahoma in the U.S. House in 2013, flipping a historically blue district. At the time, he campaigned as a political outsider, playing up his career as a mixed martial artist, rancher and proprietor of a plumbing business.

Mr. Shannon, 44, served as the speaker of Oklahomas State House from 2013 to 2015, becoming the first Black speaker in the states history.

Among the candidates who failed to make it into the runoff was Luke Holland, a longtime staff member for Mr. Inhofe, who had endorsed Mr. Holland.

The candidate who wins the runoff will face the Democratic nominee, Kendra Horn, a lawyer and former congresswoman who represented Oklahoma City from 2019 to 2021. Oklahomans voted for former President Donald J. Trump by a 33-point margin in 2020.

Boebert To Face Primary Challenger

Rep Lauren Boebert, one of the Houses most controversial members, is set to face Don Coram in Tuesdays GOP primary for the 3rd congressional district of Colorado.

Shes favoured to win, but faces a competitive challenger in Don Coram, a member of the state legislature, due in no small part to her own controversial remarks and actions. Two major PACs, the Fire Boebert PAC and the Better Than Boebert PAC, are backing her opponent.

A Congressman Under An Ethics Inquiry Is Ousted In A Primary Runoff In Mississippi

Mike Ezell, the sheriff of Jackson County, defeated Representative Steven Palazzo, a Mississippi Republican facing an ethics investigation, in a runoff election on Tuesday.

Last year, the Office of Congressional Ethics released a report saying that Mr. Palazzo had used campaign funds to pay himself and his wife nearly $200,000 to make improvements on a property he planned to sell. The House Ethics Committee is still investigating the accusations described in the report, which Mr. Palazzo has denied and called politically motivated.

The race went into a runoff after Mr. Palazzo failed to get more than 50 percent of the votes in the primary earlier this month. Mr. Ezell received the endorsement of the three other candidates who lost in the crowded primary race.

Mr. Ezell called Mr. Palazzo ineffective, attacked him as no show in the district and criticized him for proxy voting, which allows him to have another member cast a vote in his place.

Mr. Palazzo faced other controversies during the primary campaign. He skipped all of the Republican candidate debates, and, in one case, his campaign officials told debate organizers that he had to attend national security meetings. Then, later that night, Mr. Palazzo posted a photo of himself at dinner with his son on social media.

Mr. Ezell will now face Johnny L. DuPree, a Democrat and former mayor of Hattiesburg, in the fall election.

LINCOLN, Ill. Darren Bailey, the front-runner in the Republican primary for governor of Illinois, was finishing his stump speech last week at a senior center in this Central Illinois town when a voice called out: Can we pray for you?

Mr. Bailey readily agreed. The speaker, a youth mentor from Lincoln named Kathy Schmidt, placed her right hand on his left shoulder while he closed his eyes and held out his hands, palms open.

More than anything, she prayed, I ask for that, in this election, you raise up the righteous and strike down the wicked.

The wicked, in this case, are the Chicago-based moderates aiming to maintain control over the Illinois Republican Party. And the righteous is Mr. Bailey, a far-right state senator who is unlike any nominee the party has put forward for governor in living memory.

He is the favored candidate of the states anti-abortion groups, and on Friday he celebrated the Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade as a historic and welcomed moment. He has said he opposes the practice, including in cases of rape and incest.

Nearing 1 Million Deaths

Overall, roughly three-quarters of people in the U.S. are optimistic that the nation is approaching the end of the pandemic.

But that outlook is tempered by widespread loss. As the country marches toward a grim milestone of 1 million reported COVID deaths since the pandemic began two years ago, a majority of Americans 52 percent said they know someone who died from the disease.

That is up substantially since March 2021 when a third of the country said the same.

A narrow majority of Americans 53 percent approve of how he has handled the coronavirus pandemic, including nearly three-quarters of Black Americans and nine out of 10 of his voters in 2020. But about half of parents with children under age 18 said they dont like how he has handled COVID an attitude that is likely influenced by the stalled arrival of a coronavirus vaccine to protect kids under age 5, as well as ongoing debates over masks in schools and other health measures designed to prevent more people from getting severely ill or dying.

Darren Bailey’s Chances Of Winning Gop Primary In Illinois: Polls

Donald Trump endorsed Illinois state Senator Darren Bailey on Saturday in the GOP primary race for the party’s gubernatorial candidate, and polls show he is favored to win.

“Darren is just the man to take on and defeat one of the worst governors in America,” Trump said at a Mendon, Illinois, rally, referring to Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker, a consistent critic of the former president and his Make America Great Again movement. The Illinois primary will be held Tuesday.

Recent polls show that Bailey is well ahead of his Republican primary opponents. The current Real Clear Politics average of Illinois polls shows the state senator with a lead of about 16.5 points over his closest GOP rival. Bailey has the support of approximately 35 percent of likely Illinois GOP primary voters, compared with 18.5 percent who back Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin, who is more moderate. Jesse Sullivan, a venture capitalist, was in third place with an average of 11.5 percent.

The most recent survey for the governor’s race was conducted by the Trafalgar Group from June 10 to 13 and shows Bailey in the lead by 18 points. Thirty-eight percent of likely Republican primary voters backed the state senator. In second place, Irvin had the support of 20 percent, while Sullivan came in third at 12 percent.

The poll surveyed 1,075 likely voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percent.

Rep Cheney Facing Difficult Re

Cheney is trailing her leading GOP primary rival, attorney Harriet Hageman by 28-56 percent, according to a survey chartered by the Hageman-backing super PAC, Wyoming Values, and obtained by NBC News. The survey was conducted by Tony Fabrizio, who also polls for former President Trump. It closely tracks other polls in the state, according to Republican insiders.

I think the race is kind of getting baked in here against Cheney, said Republican consultant Bill Cubin. It wouldnt be so much that shes participating in the Jan. 6 Committee and yes a lot of Republicans are uncomfortable with that but theres this feeling shes not really representing Wyoming anymore.

Some Cheney supporters privately echo the same sentiment, but her campaign vehemently denies that shes not home often enough or that she has no way to come back before the Aug. 16 primary.

Travis Deti, executive director of the powerful Wyoming Mining Association, said she has been a friend to the industry and the jobs it brings.

“She and her staff are responsive and accessible, and she has always been there to deliver for us. This is a fact she has served our industry well,” Deti said via text message.

Last week, Cheney released her first major statewide ad buy that tacitly spoke to the challenge by featuring testimonials from everyday Wyomingites touting her candidacy and her home-state bona fides.

Lt Gov Antonio Delgado Fends Off A Challenge From The Left In His Ny Primary

Virginia governor election: polls show McAuliffe ahead as Youngkin campaigns

Antonio Delgado, the lieutenant governor of New York, won the Democratic primary on Tuesday, scoring a convincing victory over his nearest challenger, Ana María Archila, a longtime activist who had emerged as the left wings best chance of winning statewide office this election cycle.

Mr. Delgado prevailed despite his late entry into the race just last month, when Gov. Kathy Hochul appointed him as her second-in-command and running mate, replacing former Lt. Gov. Brian A. Benjamin, who was arrested on federal campaign finance fraud charges.

But in just a few weeks, Mr. Delgado, a former congressman from the Hudson Valley, managed to overwhelm his opponents with millions of dollars spent on television ads and campaign mailers. With Ms. Hochuls backing, he secured the partys institutional support and endorsements from major labor unions, giving him a definitive edge as he rushed to introduce himself to voters statewide.

The election for the states second-highest office became one of the most compelling and closely watched contests in Tuesdays primary after Mr. Benjamins resignation rocked the race. It cast a spotlight on a typically low-profile office with few statutory duties besides succeeding the governor a once-rare occurrence that has nonetheless come to pass for two of the last three governors.

But Ms. Archilas nimble campaign was no match for Mr. Delgado’s giant campaign war chest, which helped him outspend his opponents 80 to one on the airwaves.

Republicans Nominate Joe Odea Who Supports Some Abortion Rights For Senate In Colorado

Joe ODea, a construction company owner who favors some access to abortion, won the Republican primary for Senate in Colorado, defeating a far-right challenger whom Democrats had sought to help because they thought he would be easier to beat in the general election.

The Associated Press called the race for Mr. ODea over Ron Hanks, a state representative who has acknowledged marching to the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and opposes abortion in all instances. Mr. ODea will face Senator Michael Bennet, a Democrat seeking his third full term.

Mr. ODea, who has sought to focus his campaign on inflation, gas prices and the national debt, presents a serious challenge. Mr. Bennet, like other incumbent Democrats, faces a drag from being associated with President Biden, whose approval ratings have slumped in recent months.

Mr. ODea has said he opposes abortions late in pregnancy but would not vote to ban them early, in cases of rape or incest, or if the womans life or health were in jeopardy. On his campaign website, he posted a letter from a group of Colorado Republicans who oppose abortion in more circumstances but nonetheless backed him in the primary as the partys best chance to defeat Mr. Bennet.

Mr. Hanks began his campaign with an ad showing him shooting a fake Dominion voting machine, a device central to a false conspiracy theory that foreign powers stole votes from Mr. Trump. Mr. Hanks also used footage of himself marching on Jan. 6 in a campaign video.

Kristi Noem Projected To Win Gop Nomination For South Dakota Governor

Incumbent South Dakota Gov. Kristi L. Noem is projected to win the Republican nomination, according to the Associated Press. Polls had shown Noem, who is seeking a second term, with a significant edge in the race over state Rep. Steve Haugaard, the former state House speaker.

Noem, a potential 2024 presidential candidate, has the backing of former president Donald Trump and enjoys broad support among the conservative base. She was among the speakers at last months National Rifle Association convention in Houston, where she rallied attendees by opposing calls from Democrats to tighten gun laws after the recent mass shootings in Uvalde, Tex., and Buffalo.

But Noem has faced scrutiny over her actions during her term as governor. A state legislative probe found that Noems daughter received preferential treatment while applying for her real estate appraiser license two years ago. Democrats have pointed to the incident as an alleged abuse of power.

Separately, a prominent Trump donor, Trashelle Odom, last year accused a former top Noem adviser, Corey Lewandowski, of repeatedly groping her and making unwanted sexual comments at a charity event in Las Vegas. Lewandowski, a former Trump campaign manager, denied the accusations.

Noem has also dismissed a conservative media outlets claim that she was having an extramarital affair with Lewandowski, saying in a statement at the time, These rumors are total garbage and a disgusting lie.

A Moderate Illinois Democrat Fends Off A Progressive House Colleague In A Primary

Representative Sean Casten defeated Representative Marie Newman, a progressive colleague whose district was consolidated, in a primary on Tuesday in the Chicago suburbs.

Mr. Casten, 50, had campaigned on the premise that he gave Democrats the best chance of keeping the seat in the Sixth District, one that he flipped in the 2018 midterm elections after nearly a half-century of Republican control.

But his victory on Tuesday, called by The Associated Press, was bittersweet. Just over two weeks before the primary, Mr. Castens 17-year-old daughter, Gwen Casten, who had appeared in a recent campaign ad and had interned for her fathers campaign in 2020, died at home in Downers Grove, Ill.

Her death was confirmed by the congressmans office. In a statement on , Mr. Casten said that his college-bound daughter had died in her sleep and had been a happy, healthy, well-adjusted young woman.

Citing a statement from the police in Downers Grove, which is 22 miles west of Chicago, The Chicago Tribune reported that the teenager had been found unresponsive on the morning of June 13.

Mr. Casten suspended his campaign ads after his daughters death and so did his main rival, Ms. Newman.

A scientist and a clean-energy businessman before he was elected to Congress in 2018, Mr. Casten has become a leading proponent of legislation to address climate change. Last year, he was part of a delegation of nearly two dozen House Democrats who attended the United Nations climate summit in Scotland.

Cheney: Jan 6 Committee Will Reveal ‘new Information’

The Federalist: Hispanic GOP Congressman pulls ahead in poll

Three other Republicans in the race are mired in single digits, one of whom ran an ad recently that bashed Cheney’s vote to impeach Trump. The conservative Club for Growth, which also opposes Cheney, ran a commercial that likened her to Trump’s 2016 rival, Hillary Clinton.

Not only is Cheney getting creamed in the ballot, but Wyoming are clear that there is no room for her to get back into this race, Fabrizio wrote in a memo obtained by NBC News. A huge 71% majority say they will vote against her, including 66% who will definitely vote against Cheney no matter who she runs against. With only 26% saying they will definitely or probably vote for Cheney, she has hit her ceiling on the ballot.

The survey did not directly measure attitudes about the Capitol riot, nor did a survey released late last month that was conducted by the Club for Growth and yielded similar numbers to Fabrizios survey.

Club for Growth spokesman Joe Kildea said Cheneys role on the Jan. 6 committee and her strident opposition to Trump who remains a popular figure in the GOP is too damaging for her candidacy in a primary like Wyomings.

She’s definitely on the wrong side of the party, Kildea said.
