Why Do I Need To Change The Transmission Fluid On My Jeep

Actually, the first question is Do I need to change my transmission fluid at all? For the answer, consult your jeep Owners Manual. Unless theres a leak or a problem, some newer transmissions are designed to never need a fluid change.

But lets say your car does need a transmission fluid flush as part of preventive maintenance. The top reason to change it is to keep your transmission operating at its best. Like any other fluid such as engine oil, transmission fluid becomes less effective over time. Stop-and-go driving, towing or other high-stress conditions can shorten its life even further. Unlike other fluids, however, transmission fluid doesnt just lubricate the transmission parts, it also acts as hydraulic fluid, helping keep the transmission cooler and helping with shifts.

In a practical sense, the most important reason to perform preventive maintenance on your transmission comes down to dollars and cents: getting a transmission fluid flush might cost you a few hundred dollars, but a new transmission will cost thousands.

Jeep Patriot Transmission Fluid

A transmission fluid change is mostly half the price of a transmission flush as it requires a lot less fluid and time to perform. Jeep Patriot transmission fluid changes are exceptionally evident to keep your vehicles transmission agreeable and lubricated. If you dont routinely change your fluids at least every 30,000 miles or so, you may find that your Jeep Patriot transmission will slip. Check your cars owners manual for more information on the distinct mileage intervals in which your transmission needs the fluid replaced. At Bill Estes Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, we Coupon a variety of transmission fluid specials. What Your Patriots Transmission Fluid Does

Your Jeep Patriots transmission fluid is a hydraulic fluid, and has three main jobs:

  • Lubricant Just like motor oil it keeps the many complex mechanical parts inside of a transmission from wearing out.
  • Coolant Here it does the same job as antifreeze going through a motor. It either makes
  • Transfers Power ATF transfers power from kinetic energy into hydraulic energy and back again through the torque converter. It then transfers the power back to kinetic energy through the transmission and out the driveshaft. This process is what allows a vehicle to idle in gear not moving.
  • This is different from a manual transmission, which uses oil for lubrication only. Its amazing that transmission fluid can go so long without being changed.

There should be a recall for these CVT transmissions, they are junk. I cannot go past 55 mph without it overheating. If I stay in town or drive below 55 or drive it on cool days I have no problem. Tried calling Chrysler and all they say is get it diagnosed, several people have had same problem. I had transmission serviced, fluid changed, filter, had new transmission thermostat, and even added a new transmission cooler, but still have same trouble. What can I do to get Chrysler to recall or acknowledge these tranny s are defective? I will never buy another vehicle that has a CVT transmission.

    Jeep Patriot Transmission Flush

A transmission flush is commonly twice the price of a fluid change due to the deposit of time the service takes and the fact that the flush not only replaces the fluid in the pan but also removes fluid from the cooler lines and other parts of your transmission. A Jeep Patriot transmission flush also uses about 10 quarts of fluid to entirely clean and flush out the system.

How Often Do I Need To Change Transmission Fluid On My Jeep

Most people understand how important it is to change the engine oil and filters on their jeep, but transmission fluid doesnt always come to mind. The question of how often to get a transmission flush depends on a variety of factors.

For a manual transmission, most manufacturers say you need to change the fluid every 30,000 60,000 miles.

    • Most people these days have an automatic transmission, and thats trickier to understand. Some vehicles may never have their transmission fluid changed, unless theres a leak or another problem. Other engines have a regular maintenance interval, just like engine oil or filters.

It is important to follow jeep guidelines on transmission maintenance. If you need to have the transmission rebuilt, that can run you up to $6,000 or more.

The engine in your 2012 Jeep Patriot should be running when you perform a transmission fluid level check, otherwise it will be inaccurate. The video above shows where the transmission fluid dipstick is located in your Patriot and how to check the transmission fluid level. If the transmission fluid level in your Patriot is low, you need to add transmission fluid through the dipstick tube. When adding transmission fluid to your Patriot, be sure to add it slowly as it will fill up quickly and is difficult to remove excess fluid if you overfill. If you are having problems with the transmission in your Patriot, such as clunky shifting or hesitation, check the fluid level first – it is amazing how many drivers pay thousands of dollars for transmission work when a half quart of transmission fluid would have fixed the problem.

How Do I Know If I Need To Change The Transmission Fluid On My Jeep

Similar to the function that oil has in your engine, transmission fluid lubricates the moving parts in the transmission. When the fluid is worn out, contaminated or missing because of a leak, youll start to see or, more likely, feel problems with the way your transmission shifts.

    • Difficulty in getting into gear or staying in gear
    • A lurching or thumping when shifting. If its operating properly, you probably wont notice your transmission doing its job if you really feel the shifts, you may have an issue.
    • A lag between pressing the accelerator and actually accelerating. A variety of different issues could cause this, but transmission issues could be one.
    • Strange noises like whining or grinding.

If you suspect an issue, the best course of action is to take your car to your local jeep service center to get it checked out.

Low Transmission Fluid Signs: Jeep Patriot

    CVT Transmission
  • Higher RPM at any given speed If your Patriots engine seems to be revving higher than it should be at any particular speed than it may very well be a symptom of low transmission fluid. It could also indicate that the torque converter is not locking up either. But if its the torque converter, itll only jump up a few hundred RPM s.
  • Engine sounds different uphill If you are going up a steep grade, youll find that the fluid may not be able to be picked up from the pan. The motor will then rev higher as the transmission starves for fluid.
  • High transmission temperature An automatic transmission needs its fluid not just for converting mechanical energy to hydraulic in the torque converter. It also needs it for cooling purposes. So, if you happen to have a transmission temperature gauge than you can take this as a warning. Your transmission fluid is probably low.
  • Put car into gear, but its not going anywhere Often, if you let a vehicle sit for a while, itll cough up transmission fluid. So, it may have been full the last time you drove your Patriot, but low next time you go to use it. Youll go to drive it somewhere and itll either not move at all or itll move only a little. This can often be caused by a loose torque converter. Did you happen to notice a vibration at highway speed? Thats a telltale sign of a loose converter.

Questions About 2009 Jeep Patriots Transmission

    • What happens when you “ride” your Jeep’s brakes? Riding the brakes or keeping your foot on the brake pedal can lead to transmission issues. Keep that in mind when driving in hilly terrain and remember to use engine braking when possible.
    • What can I tow in a Jeep? Think twice before volunteering to tow a moving trailer, no matter how light the load might seem. The added weight can cause issues with your transmission if your vehicle isn’t equipped to handle the load. Check your owner’s manual to ensure you have the proper towing setup and aren’t going over your towing capacity.
    • When should I have my Patriot’s transmission fluid checked or exchanged? Caring for your Jeep Patriotâs transmission fluid is a great way to help it perform. Some technicians would say that between 30,000 and 60,000 miles is a good timeframe for having your Jeep’s transmission fluid checked and replaced, but that timeline can vary depending on how your vehicle is used and your manufacturerâs recommendations. Leaks or low transmission fluid are easy to spot and affordable to repair.

How To Check The Trans Fluid In A Jeep Patriot

Checking and changing the transmission fluid are among the many things that should be done when performing regular maintenance on your Jeep Patriot. Transmission fluid helps lubricate the transmission when idling and shifting gears. These shifts cause a tremendous amount of friction and pressure, so an adequate amount of clean lubricant is needed. Although the Jeep Patriot’s transmission system is sophisticated, checking the fluid level is a simple task and should be done periodically to ensure that the system remains protected.

    Step 1

Start the engine and allow the Jeep Patriot to idle for about five minutes. Make sure the transmission is in “Park.”

    Step 2

Pull the hood release handle to unlatch the hood. This is usually located near the steering column under the dashboard.

    Step 3

Open the Jeep Patriot’s hood. If it is not equipped with a pneumatic system that holds the hood up, prop it open with the hood stand.

    Step 4

Locate the transmission fluid dipstick near the back of the engine around the transmission. The dipstick is stamped or printed with “Transmission Fluid” or similar wording.

    Step 5

  • First and foremost and this is always good advice consult your jeep owners manual.
  • Park your vehicle on a flat surface.
  • Based on the owners manual, decide whether to check the transmission fluid with the engine on or off. Obviously, youll have to be a lot more careful if the engine is running.
  • Apply the parking brake for safety and make sure the vehicle is in Park.
  • Find the transmission dipstick, which is usually brightly colored and toward the back of the engine.
  • Remove the dipstick, being careful not to spill or drip any fluid. Wipe off the dipstick with a clean rag, just as you would do when checking the engine oil.
  • Reinsert the dipstick, then remove the dipstick again to check the fluid level.
  • If you need to top it off, be sure to use the recommended transmission fluid. If the fluid is particularly low, you might have a leak and should get it checked out.
