Why Do I Need To Change The Transmission Fluid On My Jeep
Actually, the first question is Do I need to change my transmission fluid at all? For the answer, consult your jeep Owners Manual. Unless theres a leak or a problem, some newer transmissions are designed to never need a fluid change.
But lets say your car does need a transmission fluid flush as part of preventive maintenance. The top reason to change it is to keep your transmission operating at its best. Like any other fluid such as engine oil, transmission fluid becomes less effective over time. Stop-and-go driving, towing or other high-stress conditions can shorten its life even further. Unlike other fluids, however, transmission fluid doesnt just lubricate the transmission parts, it also acts as hydraulic fluid, helping keep the transmission cooler and helping with shifts.
In a practical sense, the most important reason to perform preventive maintenance on your transmission comes down to dollars and cents: getting a transmission fluid flush might cost you a few hundred dollars, but a new transmission will cost thousands.
Jeep Patriot Transmission Fluid

If you dont routinely change your fluids at least every 30,000 miles or so, you may find that your Jeep Patriot transmission will slip. I am the first and the only owner of the car and had problems , PROBLEMS from the day one. The technical manual is JOKE, my car never run as that book. If I ever had a power to lay off the engineers and technicians from JEEP, I will do it without any hesitation and I WILL LAY OFF THEM IN SAME WAY, THAT THEY WILL NOT BE QUALIFIED FOR UNEMPLOYED BENEFITS.

There should be a recall for these CVT transmissions, they are junk. I cannot go past 55 mph without it overheating. If I stay in town or drive below 55 or drive it on cool days I have no problem. Tried calling Chrysler and all they say is get it diagnosed, several people have had same problem. I had transmission serviced, fluid changed, filter, had new transmission thermostat, and even added a new transmission cooler, but still have same trouble. What can I do to get Chrysler to recall or acknowledge these tranny s are defective? I will never buy another vehicle that has a CVT transmission.

Most people understand how important it is to change the engine oil and filters on their jeep, but transmission fluid doesnt always come to mind. The question of how often to get a transmission flush depends on a variety of factors.

If the transmission fluid level in your Patriot is low, you need to add transmission fluid through the dipstick tube. When adding transmission fluid to your Patriot, be sure to add it slowly as it will fill up quickly and is difficult to remove excess fluid if you overfill. If you are having problems with the transmission in your Patriot, such as clunky shifting or hesitation, check the fluid level first – it is amazing how many drivers pay thousands of dollars for transmission work when a half quart of transmission fluid would have fixed the problem.

How Do I Know If I Need To Change The Transmission Fluid On My Jeep
Similar to the function that oil has in your engine, transmission fluid lubricates the moving parts in the transmission. When the fluid is worn out, contaminated or missing because of a leak, youll start to see or, more likely, feel problems with the way your transmission shifts.
- Difficulty in getting into gear or staying in gear
- A lurching or thumping when shifting. If its operating properly, you probably wont notice your transmission doing its job if you really feel the shifts, you may have an issue.
- A lag between pressing the accelerator and actually accelerating. A variety of different issues could cause this, but transmission issues could be one.
- Strange noises like whining or grinding.
If you suspect an issue, the best course of action is to take your car to your local jeep service center to get it checked out.

Questions About 2009 Jeep Patriots Transmission
- What happens when you “ride” your Jeep’s brakes? Riding the brakes or keeping your foot on the brake pedal can lead to transmission issues. Keep that in mind when driving in hilly terrain and remember to use engine braking when possible.
- What can I tow in a Jeep? Think twice before volunteering to tow a moving trailer, no matter how light the load might seem. The added weight can cause issues with your transmission if your vehicle isn’t equipped to handle the load. Check your owner’s manual to ensure you have the proper towing setup and aren’t going over your towing capacity.
- When should I have my Patriot’s transmission fluid checked or exchanged? Caring for your Jeep Patriotâs transmission fluid is a great way to help it perform. Some technicians would say that between 30,000 and 60,000 miles is a good timeframe for having your Jeep’s transmission fluid checked and replaced, but that timeline can vary depending on how your vehicle is used and your manufacturerâs recommendations. Leaks or low transmission fluid are easy to spot and affordable to repair.
How To Check The Trans Fluid In A Jeep Patriot
Checking and changing the transmission fluid are among the many things that should be done when performing regular maintenance on your Jeep Patriot. Transmission fluid helps lubricate the transmission when idling and shifting gears. These shifts cause a tremendous amount of friction and pressure, so an adequate amount of clean lubricant is needed. Although the Jeep Patriot’s transmission system is sophisticated, checking the fluid level is a simple task and should be done periodically to ensure that the system remains protected.
Step 1
Start the engine and allow the Jeep Patriot to idle for about five minutes. Make sure the transmission is in “Park.”
Step 2
Pull the hood release handle to unlatch the hood. This is usually located near the steering column under the dashboard.
Step 3
Open the Jeep Patriot’s hood. If it is not equipped with a pneumatic system that holds the hood up, prop it open with the hood stand.
Step 4
Locate the transmission fluid dipstick near the back of the engine around the transmission. The dipstick is stamped or printed with “Transmission Fluid” or similar wording.

The manufacturer doesn’t want you to check it…but you can. You’ll need info from the service manual, as the correct level depends on the temperature. And you’ll need the 9336A dipstick: https://www.amazon.com/Automatic-Transmission-Dipstick-Chrysler-vehicles/dp/B071WYSMSB
