Donald Trump Impeachment Trial: What You Need To Know

What Would It Take for Me to Vote Republican?

Senate trial began on Tuesday for ex-president charged with incitement of insurrection over Capitol riot

Donald Trumps unprecedented second impeachment trial began on Tuesday 9 February in the Senate. He is the first US president to be impeached twice, and it is the first time an impeachment trial has been held against a former president. The trial will hear allegations that he committed high crimes and misdemeanors before leaving office.

What To Watch For

While Trumps impeachment in the House is a foregone conclusion, conviction in the Senate is a far murkier question. A handful of senators have advocated Trumps resignation or removal without explicitly voicing support for impeachment, but Democrats may struggle to muster the 17 GOP votes needed to get the necessary two-thirds majority. Additionally, McConnell has signaled a Senate impeachment trial likely wouldnt occur until after Trump has left office.

What Will It Take For Republicans To Impeach Donald Trump

Republicans in Congress have mastered the art of pretending to be outraged with President Donald;Trump without actually doing anything meaningfully to stop him.

Remember when Trump;blamed both sides;for the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville last summer? House Speaker Paul Ryan;said at a CNN forum;that;the presidents;morally ambiguous statements were wrong. Senate Majority;Leader Mitch McConnell;made the point;that there are no good neo-Nazis. Florida Sen.;Marco Rubio challenged Trump;by tweeting, Mr. President, you cant allow #WhiteSupremacists to share only part of blame.

In January, when Trump;expressed frustration;with people coming to the U.S.;from shithole countries, Ryan called the remarks very unfortunate. South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott said;they were;disappointing to say the least. Ohio Sen. Rob Portman described them as wrong and indefensible. Wisconsin Sen. Ron Jonson;said they were totally inappropriate and he should apologize.

On Monday, standing next to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump;declared that the United States has been foolish I think;were all to blame for;the decline in U.S. relations with Russia.

In an indictment filed Friday by special prosecutor Robert Mueller, Russia was found to perpetrate a conspiracy for the explicit intent to;interfere with the 2016;presidential election.

Congress Can Remove A President For High Crimes And Misdemeanors

Republicans Would Rather Impeach Than Disclose

The Constitution allows Congress to remove presidents, or other officers of the executive branch, before their terms are through if lawmakers believe they have committed treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors.

Impeachment is a two-part process, and deliberately difficult. First, the House votes on whether to impeach the equivalent of indicting someone in a criminal case. The charges are codified in articles of impeachment detailing the allegations of offenses against the nation.

If a simple majority of the House votes in favor of pressing charges, the Senate must promptly consider them at a trial. The House prosecutes the case, appointing impeachment managers to argue before senators, who act as the jury, and the president is traditionally allowed to mount a defense. The chief justice of the United States oversees the trial.

In the Senate, the threshold for conviction is much higher. Two-thirds of the senators seated at any given moment must agree to convict; otherwise, the president is acquitted. If all 100 senators were seated at the time of trial, that means 17 Republicans would have to join Democrats to obtain a conviction a high bar to clear.

Could Joe Biden Face Impeachment

A GOP Senator is already calling for President-elect Joe Biden to be impeached once he takes office on January 20.

Republican President Donald Trump was impeached for the second time on January 13, the only president in US history to have been impeached twice.

Would The President Be Removed From Office

Itâs highly unlikely. The timeline alone makes it hard to imagine a full Senate trial taking place by the time Biden is set to take his oath of office.

In addition, thereâs little chance that enough Republican senators would cross the aisle to vote in favor of the Presidentâs removal. At least one, Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska, said he would âconsiderâ it.

“The House, if they come together and have a process, I will definitely consider whatever articles they might move,â Sasse told CBS This Morning.

Others have warned against impeachment altogether, saying it would backfire.

âIf Speaker Pelosi pushes impeachment in the last days of the Trump presidency it will do more harm than good,â Sen. Lindsey Graham wrote on Twitter.;

âAny attempt to impeach President Trump would not only be unsuccessful in the Senate but would be a dangerous precedent for the future of the presidency,â Graham added.

What Would It Take A Time Machine

We no longer live in a country where indisputable facts and evidence change minds. “He didn’t do it” or “It wasn’t that bad” couldn’t work for Nixon, the obviousness of the facts changed minds in the Congress and the public. Even if they were politically motivated, Republican congressmen understood that the damning facts would be reported accurately and believed by the public.I have been watching the same movie over and over during this administration: A week of things that make Trump look bad summed up on Washington Week on Friday, and by Sunday the necessary mental gymnastics to make it look not so bad have been prepared for Meet the Press et al. For Senators to vote for impeachment, it would take the loss of voter support for Trump. That would take policy reversals on immigration or abortion which are not coming.

House Republicans Join Democrats In Voting To Impeach Trump

What would it take to impeach the President? | The World

Washington Ten Republican members of the House, including one of its highest-ranking leaders, joined Democrats in voting to impeach President Trump for inciting the deadly attack on the Capitol last week by a violent mob of his supporters.;

The final vote was 232 to 197, as the 10 Republicans joined all 222 Democrats in voting in favor of the impeachment resolution.;

The article of impeachment will next be delivered to the Senate, where Mr. Trump will be placed on trial. However, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said after the House vote that there is “simply no chance that a fair or serious trial could conclude before President-elect Biden is sworn in next week.”

Mr. Trump is the first president to be impeached twice. When he was;impeached;in 2019 over his attempts to pressure Ukraine to investigate Joe and Hunter Biden, no House Republicans voted in favor of impeaching him. But this time, 10 members of his own party determined his actions warranted impeachment.

Here are the Republicans who voted to impeach Mr. Trump:

  • Liz Cheney of Wyoming

  • Tom Rice of South Carolina

  • Fred Upton of Michigan

  • David Valadao of California

Cheney, the third-ranking Republican in the House, said in a statement on Tuesday that she would vote to impeach Mr. Trump after he whipped up his supporters Wednesday at a rally not far from the Capitol.

If An Impeachment Trial Lasts Through Jan 20 Does It Automatically End

Itâs unclear. The Constitution outlines the process for impeachment and removal from office, but it doesnât require a specific timeline or mention whether the process should end when a president leaves.

âI donât think anyone contemplated that when they were writing the Constitution,â Professor Bloch said. âI would hazard a guess that there would be no point in continuing after that.â

Once Biden is inaugurated, President Trump will become a private citizen. When former President Richard Nixon resigned in the summer of 1974, his impeachment did not continue, even though some articles had already passed the House

Itâs quite possible that Congress could choose to end the process and move on after Biden takes the oath. Still, the president would not be immune to criminal charges related to his conduct while in office.

Growing Number Of Gop Senators Oppose Impeachment Trial

WASHINGTON A growing number of Republican senators say they oppose holding an impeachment trial, a sign of the dimming chances that former President Donald Trump will be convicted on the charge that he incited a siege of the U.S. Capitol.

House Democrats, who will walk the impeachment charge of incitement of insurrection to the Senate on Monday evening, are hoping that strong Republican denunciations of Trump after the Jan. 6 riot will translate into a conviction and a separate vote to bar Trump from holding office again. But GOP passions appear to have cooled since the insurrection, and now that Trumps presidency is over, Republican senators who will serve as jurors in the trial are rallying to his legal defense, as they did during his first impeachment trial last year.

I think the trial is stupid, I think its counterproductive, said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.. He said that the first chance I get to vote to end this trial, Ill do it because he believes it would be bad for the country and further inflame partisan divisions.

I think a lot of Americans are going to think its strange that the Senate is spending its time trying to convict and remove from office a man who left office a week ago, Cotton said.

Impeachment Trial: 44 Republicans Voted Against Proceeding ...

Mr. Katkos moderate brand of politics has returned him to Washington for four terms despite his seats perennial status as a top Democratic target, and he has said he is running again in 2022.

In 2022, his real threat may come from the right. Mr. Trump has yet to endorse a primary challenger but he wrote to New York Republican leaders in June of his eagerness to do so, vowing: Katko will never win again.

Far from backing down, Mr. Katko on Wednesday told The Syracuse Post-Standard that Mr. Trump should not be the leader of the Republican Party. It would have been a lot easier if I didnt vote on the impeachment vote, but I did it because it was the right thing to do, he said.

The top Republican on the Homeland Security Committee, Mr. Katko labored this year to negotiate with Democrats on the makeup and scope of a bipartisan commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack. But Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, the Republican leader, rejected a compromise endorsed by Mr. Katko because it would not have examined unrelated political violence associated with the left.

Do Any Republicans Support The Impeachment Of President Trump Or Have They Said What It Would Take For Them To Support It

Impeaching the president is a popular topic among Democrats these days. But Republicans control both houses of Congress, so it seems like a futile endeavor without significant Republican support.

Have any Congressional Republicans so far said they support impeachment, or said what it would take for them to support impeachment, or what they consider impeachable offenses for this president? Additionally, is there any significant support by Republican voters for impeachment, or is this a purely partisan issue by Democrats right now?

ETA: I am asking about this president generally but I am most interested in Republican positions considering the firing of the James Comey, the president’s admission that it was because of the investigation against himself , and the president’s subsequent threat against Comey. And if any of that has had an effect on Republican support for impeachment.

Additionally, is there any significant support by Republican voters for impeachment, or is this a purely partisan issue by Democrats right now?

According to Public Policy Polling , only 8% of self-identified Donald Trump voters think that he should be impeached. 89% think that he should not be impeached. Overall 45% of voters oppose impeachment and 44% support it. Using voting for Trump as an proxy for Republicans, this suggests that it is mostly Democrats who support impeachment.

All But 5 Republicans Vote To Dismiss Trump Impeachment Trial On Constitutional Grounds

  • Copy article linkCopy link

All but five U.S. Senate Republicans voted in favour of an effort to dismiss Donald;Trumps historic second impeachment trial on Tuesday, making clear a conviction of the former president for incitement of insurrection after the deadly Capitol siege on Jan. 6 is unlikely.

While the Republicans did not succeed in ending the trial before it began, the test vote made clear that Trump still has enormous sway over his party as he becomes the first former president to be tried for impeachment. Many Republicans have criticized Trumps role in the attack before which he told his supporters to fight like hell to overturn his defeat but most of them have rushed to defend him in the trial.

I think this was indicative of where a lot of peoples heads are, said South Dakota Sen. John Thune, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, after the vote.

At Least 5 House Republicans to Support Trump Impeachment

Rep. Tom Rice, representing South Carolinas 7th Congressional District, voted to impeach Trump, though he had not spoken out publicly about his decision prior to the vote.

In a statement after the vote Wednesday, Rice said he was not sure whether Trumps speech before the mobs attack amounted to incitement of a riot, but any reasonable person could see the potential for violence.

Once the violence began, when the Capitol was under siege, when the Capitol Police were being beaten and killed, and when the Vice President and the Congress were being locked down, the President was watching and tweeted about the Vice Presidents lack of courage, Rice wrote.

I have backed this President through thick and thin for four years. I campaigned for him and voted for him twice. But, this utter failure is inexcusable.
