The Red Sox have unveiled new, special edition uniforms to be worn on Patriots Day weekend this year, the team announced Tuesday.
In collaboration with Nike, Major League Baseballs official uniform provider, the Sox are the first of seven teams this season to roll out their Nike MLB City Connect Series uniforms.
Representing more than a team.

Rather than the traditional navy blue and red look, the Red Sox will be donning yellow jerseys with baby blue trim and stencil lettering in the middle two games of their four-game series against the White Sox on Patriots Day weekend later this month.
The new uniforms are a tribute of sorts to the Boston Marathon and the spirit it encapsulates in Boston and throughout New England.

The City Connect uniform adopts colors that honor the spirit of Patriots Day weekend, and features Boston in a stencil font across the chest paying tribute to the Boylston Street finish line, the team said in a statement. The numbers 617 are highlighted on the left sleeve as a nod to the area code for Boston and Fenway Park. The numbers appear within a racing bib, honoring one of the citys most iconic annual sports traditions.
As previously mentioned, the Sox will wear these new City Connect uniforms against the White Sox on April 17 and April 18. They will still wear their traditional white B Strong jerseys on Patriots Day , as they have every year since 2013.
The Colors Are A Tribute To Patriots Day And The Boston Marathon
The Red Sox announced the new uniform ahead of their April games against the Chicago White Sox. And by player request, the team has been wearing the colors during their games against the Baltimore Orioles this weekend, according to MassLive.com.
The new uniform swaps out the teams usual red, navy blue, and white color scheme for yellow jerseys with a cyan logo, white pants, cyan caps, and yellow shoes.
In a press release, the Red Sox said the switch-up was a tribute to Patriots Day a Massachusetts state holiday commemorating the first battles of the Revolutionary War as well as the Boston Marathon an annual tradition that takes place on the same day as MassLive.com reported at the time.

Weve seen the alternate blue and red uniforms they pull out occasionally but the latest version is significantly different from anything weve ever seen from this franchise.

Instead of the classic home whites with the team name stenciled across the front in bold red letters, these uniforms resemble the distinctive marathon colors with yellow jerseys featuring Boston across the front in blue letters. A patch on the left sleeve with 617 printed on it represents the area code where Fenway Park resides. The caps retain the iconic B on the front but it will be in the same lighter blue featured on the jersey with yellow trim surrounding it.
The Red Sox also released a video narrated by David Ortiz to showcase the new uniforms as fans from around the Boston area explain what the B represents.

The navy and red combo paired with the teams iconic B logo is a staple of the sport, and while that B will remain on the Red Sox hats with the City Connect uniforms, the colours are in for a big change.

The Boston Red Sox, known for their traditional white uniforms with red lettering and the iconic “B,” are unveiling their first jersey without any red at all.
As part of Major League Baseball’s first major jersey collaboration with Nike — which became the sport’s uniform supplier in 2019 — the Red Sox unveiled the yellow-and-powder-blue uniforms Tuesday.
Inspired by the Patriots’ Day holiday and the Boston Marathon, the jerseys feature a marathon bib patch with 617, Fenway Park’s area code, on the left sleeve.
The radical design for MLB is part of Nike’s first venture into designing alternates for baseball, known as the City Connect series, meant to push the boundaries of uniform design.
“It was front and center and this is why we did this deal. You take two iconic brands and you put them together and you have one and one make three,” MLB chief revenue officer Noah Garden said. “This is what we expected, and this is what we wanted. This is the plan we always set out for.”
The City Connect series will start with seven teams with scattered unveil dates: the Red Sox, Miami Marlins , Chicago White Sox , Chicago Cubs , Arizona Diamondbacks , San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers .
Every MLB team is expected to have a City Connect series jersey by the end of the 2023 season, with teams working individually with Nike to create a uniform that’s connected to the personality and community of each city.

The City Connect jerseys were first worn by the team for Patriots Day weekend. They have a 617 patch in the style of a racing bib on the left sleeve which evokes the 617 Strong jersey that hung in the Red Sox dugout after the bombing. Eventually, that jersey was draped in the World Series trophy that the team carried to the marathon finish line during their championship parade.
