Mac Jones Vs Jets Defense

Jets vs. Patriots Week 7 Highlights | NFL 2021

Jones has not posted flashy numbers this season, but he is not falling into the pitfalls of the other rookies. When we look at the OVM data from the first six weeks, he is providing above-average value to his environment.

Jones is completing over 70% of his passes and throwing for nearly 250 yards per game. Nothing spectacular, but a major step up from other first-round rookies this year. He has led the Patriots passing game to be slightly below average across the board. Their 6.3 net passing yards per attempt ranks 23rd, while his 7 touchdowns rank 22nd.

What Jones gets this week is a tough-to-read matchup with the Jets. Over the course of the year, the Jets have been an average defense against the pass. They rank 13th overall in net passing yards per attempt. Furthermore, they have allowed just 4 passing touchdowns all season.

In their last matchup against the Falcons in London, New Yorks defense looked at sea at times against Matt Ryan and the Falcons. Ryan actually scored 2 of those 4 touchdowns, demonstrating this unit can be susceptible against the pass.

Patriots Vs Jets History

The AFL kicked off in 1960 with a couple of charter members in the Northeast, two of them being the Patriots and Jets. The rivalry has since evolved into one that sees streaks more than a balanced stretch of games.

It hasnt always been a Brady and Bill Belichick train running through the Jets organization and Belichick wasnt the only member of the Patriots to be associated with the Jets. Bill Parcells left New England for the Jets, taking over as their head coach. Both men were with the Jets for only a couple of years, when Parcells resigned in 1999, leaving Belichick to move on to New England.

If youre looking for drama between these two teams, the start of the 1999 season offered plenty. The Jets lost starter Vinny Testaverde and replaced him with former Pats punter Tom Tupa. The Patriots, down at the half, reeled off 17 straight to eventually win the game, holding off Rick Mirers last-minute efforts from New England.

More recently the two teams played in the 2010 AFC Divisional Round game up in New England. This one provided magic but from the Jets side, as Mark Sanchez was simply better than Brady that day. Three big TDs from Sanchez helped the Jets advance in hostile territory. Brady was harassed all day by the Jets front and was sacked five times.

Belichick Great Against Rookies

Bill Belichick is 21-6 against first-year passers since becoming the Patriots head coach in 2000. However, all six of Belichicks losses were on the road, which helps Wilson in his debut against New England.

The Jets face the Patriots in the friendly confines of MetLife Stadium, though Gang Green hasnt beaten Belichick since 2015. Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith were two of the six rookies to beat Belichick.

The New York Jets traveled across the pond for the first time in franchise history to face their AFC East rival, the Miami Dolphins. The offense, led by QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, got off to a quick start with a 58-yard heave to Brandon Marshall and a 3-yard touchdown run by Chris Ivory to put the Jets up 7-0. The Jets defense dominated the Dolphins offense for the majority of the game, shutting down Ryan Tannehill, however the Dolphins pulled within 2 scores in the 4th quarter. NYJ forced 2 interceptions, both in the fourth quarter, to put the game away. The New York Jets won 27-14, and improved their record to 3-1 heading into their bye week.

The Patriots Are Now 3

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Gillette Stadium is now in the win column. The Patriots moved to 3-4 on the season and won their first home game of the year in convincing fashion over the New York Jets 54-13. This win snaps what was a four-game losing streak for the Patriots in Foxborough, which was the worst home start since 1993.

New England was firing on all cylinders from the jump, scoring on their first six possessions of the game. The first score was arguably the most creative of the season as Mac Jones gave the ball to wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, who would then throw it 25 yards down the field to Nelson Agholor. The Patriots’ offense would go on a 17-0 run to begin the game before the Jets could find the end zone. At that point, backup quarterback Mike White was in the game for New York after first-round rookie Zach Wilson departed the game due to a knee injury he suffered in the opening minutes of the second quarter.

Entering the second half with a double-digit lead, the Patriots kept their foot on the gas through the final two quarters, outscoring the Jets 23-6 over that stretch. While it was a dominating day for the New England offense, the defense was also able to create multiple turnovers against the Jets .

From here, the Patriots will head out west to take on the Chargers in Los Angeles in Week 8, while the Jets will return to MetLife Stadium and await the Cincinnati Bengals.

Patriots Beating Of Jets: A Summary

Patriots vs. Jets Week 2 Highlights | NFL 2021

I decided to write up a summary anyway, even though that tweet tells you everything you need to know. In case you want details, here they are.

The Jets came into this game fresh off a bye week and the Patriots came into it fresh off an overtime loss to the Cowboys. They were 0-4 at their home stadium after that, and not lookin’ so hot. The Jets, however, looked even LESS hot coming into today.

First quarter

In the first quarter, the Patriots took the lead right away with a touchdown pass to Agholor on their first drive of the game. Pats are up 7-0. The Jets get exactly nowhere on their returning drive. The Patriots then turn around and get another touchdown straight away with Harris running that one in to give the Pats a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter. The Jets try to answer with some points at least, as they make it to field goal range, but Ammendola’s 48-yard attempt is no good. The Pats stay up 14-0 at the end of the first.

Second quarter

Third quarter

The Jets start out the second half with a touchdown run by Elijah Moore. They go for the two-point conversion but they don’t get anywhere, giving them just 6 points and putting the score at 31-13. The Jets’ luck runs out here as they don’t score another point the rest of the game. Meanwhile, the Patriots don’t let up. They get a field goal, putting them up 34-13, and then two interceptions in a row, one by Dugger, and one by Jackson.

Jets Offensive Line Vs Patriots Defensive Line

One area of weakness on this offense has been the Jets offensive line. Wilsons sack rate is the second-highest in the league at 9.5%, and even if some of that is on Wilson himself, it still reflects poorly on the line as well. Combine that with Football Outsiders offensive line metrics having the Jets OL as the seventh-worst unit in terms of adjusted line yards? The whole picture is not pretty.

The outcome has been that the Jets running game has struggled. No running back has averaged more than 3.7 yards per carry this year, and the team as a whole ranks as the third-lowest at 3.6 yards per attempt.

The solace for the Jets is that in this matchup vs. the Patriots, the opposing defensive line is nothing special. The Patriots are very much an average defensive line both across the running and passing game. Football Outsiders defensive line metrics rank them 20th overall as a unit.

However, when it comes to rushing the passer, there are clear concerns. The defense ranks as the fifth-worst in terms of pressure rate and seventh-worst in QB knockdown rate . Therefore, its somewhat remarkable that the Patriots rank in the middle of the pack with a 6% sack rate. They are making the most of what relatively little pressure they get and making sure it really counts when they hit the QB.

Jones Tosses 2 Tds Patriots Roll 54

  • AP

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. The Patriots walked off the field Sunday with the type of win that had eluded them. The Jets left with two losses, one that could further complicate an already frustrating year.

Mac Jones threw two touchdown passes in his first 300-yard game, Damien Harris and J.J. Taylor ran for two TDs each and New England won for the first time at home this season, rolling past New York 54-13.

”We finally kind of saw a little bit of a result that was good, and we’ve just got to stick to the formula and stick to the process,” Jones said.

The Patriots earned their 12th straight victory and sixth consecutive season sweep over the Jets , who played most of the game without rookie quarterback Zach Wilson after the second overall draft pick left with 12:31 remaining in the second quarter with a right knee injury.

Wilson was hit by Patriots linebacker Matt Judon, who fell on the back of Wilson’s legs after he released a pass that fell incomplete for Keelan Cole. Wilson initially was down for several minutes as he was examined by the training staff before eventually being able to walk off the field on his own power. He did not return and was replaced by Mike White – who hadn’t previously taken an NFL regular-season snap.

Wilson said the initial diagnosis is an injured posterior cruciate ligament.

Wilson will have an MRI and further evaluation Monday.

”Initially you feel good. But you never know,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said.

Patriots Offensive Line Vs Jets Defensive Line

The Patriots offensive line has been a major sticking point this year, especially in the run game. According to Football Outsiders, their offensive line is one of the worst in the league in terms of adjusted line yards.

A prime emphasis of this was when the Patriots rushed for 48 yards in Weeks 3 and 4 combined. They have picked that up in the last two weeks, averaging 123 yards per game on the ground and generally looking more comfortable running the ball.

In terms of pass protection, they have been largely an average unit but have given up big plays that have been costly at key junctures. That lack of consistency is a concern for this unit in front of a rookie QB. If Jones cannot trust that the group in front of him will hold up, he may start staring down the pass rush instead of focusing on his reads.

New Yorks defensive line is a marginally above-average unit across the whole picture. In the run game, they are pretty much an average group. However, they have had good moments rushing the passer. Their 6.6% sack percentage has them tied for ninth, while they are a top-six unit in terms of pressure rate.

The Patriots have built their franchise on a strong offensive line, but quite simply, they do not have that right now. The Jets pass rush has a fantastic opportunity to cause havoc for Mac Jones in this matchup vs. the Patriots offensive line.

Out of playoff contention heading into the last game of the season, Namath and many Jets players went out and hit it hard until the morning hours of gameday and showed up to play still drunk. It did not seem to matter. Broadway Joe threw three touchdowns and the Jets led 31-13 going into the fourth quarter. The win also ended the Patriots’ playoff hopes.

Jets Skill Players Vs Patriots Secondary

The Jets will have more weapons at their disposal in this matchup than they did in Week 2. Jamison Crowder was not on the field for the Jets that week, but hes played a significant role since his return in Week 4. Crowder has seen 15 targets, pulling in 11 for 85 yards, a touchdown, and a 2-point conversion.

While those numbers may not seem all that groundbreaking, it is merely Crowders presence that improves this pass-catching unit significantly. With Crowder, the Jets can use varying combinations of him, Corey Davis, Elijah Moore, Keelan Cole, Denzel Mims, and Braxton Berrios. The potential personnel groupings force the defense to make tough choices about who to cover with which defender.

In Week 2, the Patriots focused the majority of their attention on Davis, who was coming off a solid Week 1 performance. At least 2 of Wilsons interceptions that day came when forcing the ball towards Davis. With Crowder on the field, it simply opens up more options for Davis on each snap.

For the most part, the Patriots secondary has posted solid numbers . However, we have seen several breakdowns occurring both the Texans and Cowboys hit numerous big plays.

With the trading of Stephon Gilmore, they lack a top-end corner. J.C. Jackson is now the leader of this team, but he is better known as a ball hawk than a shutdown cornerback. So far in 2021, Jacksons QB rating allowed is higher than in any other year of his career.

This is no longer mid-major college football. Its the AFC East, and even during last years down season, New England was still 5-3 at home.”
