Thom Tillis, who turned 60 in August, was elected as North Carolina’s junior senator in 2014.

Tillis was born in Jacksonville, Florida but his family moved more than a dozen times during his childhood. Tillis never attended the same school two years in a row, as his family lived in New Orleans, as well as Nashville, Tennessee. He has a bachelor’s degree in technology management from the University of Maryland.

Thom Tillis lives with his wife, Susan, in Huntersville, North Carolina. They have two grown children and two grandchildren, according to his campaign bio.

Thom Tillis’ public service career began as the PTA president of his daughter’s high school. He was also a member of the Town of Cornelius Board of Commissioners. In 2006, he was voted to the North Carolina House of Representatives. From 2011-2014, he served as speaker of the North Carolina House.

Thom Tillis Went Full Trump Now Hes Dcs Most Vulnerable Republican

Hes perhaps best known for getting lots of money from big pharma, big oil, big banks, and payday lenders, and for pushing their preferred policies.

Republican Senator Thom Tillis is a loud voice in committee hearings, pushing the Obamagate conspiracy and reading aloud the dictionary definitions of witch hunt and hoax.

But thats not what he talks about at home in North Carolina, running for re-election. His first television ad has him walking through a trailer park recalling his humble roots and pledging to be a fighter for workers, protecting their jobs as the economy recovers.

His family moved around a lot, he was one of six children, and he worked his way through college. Good for him. But hes been in Washington for six years, and whoever put the ad together probably didnt notice Tillis is wearing a $110 Tommy Bahama polo shirt.

Hes trying to reinvent himself right before an election by focusing on his humble roots but he has consistently voted against policies that would help folks move up the economic ladder, move up the education ladder, says Morgan Jackson, a political strategist in Raleigh. Its not just where you came from, its what you do with it.

A second ad, Pay Day, has Tillis walking behind the counter of a restaurant with burgers on the grill reminiscing about his days as a short-order cook and saying that hes fighting for the people forgotten by our politics.

North Carolina Election Results: Tillis Defeats Hagan

Senator Thom Tillis

Thom Tillis defeats Senator Kay Hagan, the Democratic incumbent. Read More

In one of the nations most closely watched races, Thom Tillis, the Republican speaker of the North Carolina House, narrowly won a Senate seat against Kay Hagan, a first-time Democratic senator. For months, Ms. Hagan, a prime Republican target, led in the polls, but Mr. Tillis closed the gap in the final days of the race.

Mr. Tillis, 54, asserted that Ms. Hagan, 61, was President Obamas ideological clone, while she called him too conservative for the state, which went for Mr. Obama in 2008 before flipping to Mitt Romney in 2012. Helped by Mr. Obamas 2008 victory, Ms. Hagan that year defeated Elizabeth Dole, 53 percent to 44 percent.

The Hagan campaign criticized Mr. Tillis for supporting restrictions on voters, resisting Medicaid expansion, slashing jobless benefits and supporting deep cuts in the states education budget, before the Legislature voted to increase school spending this year. Mr. Tillis accused her of being too liberal for North Carolina by supporting the Affordable Care Act.

Despite Mr. Tilliss attacks, Ms. Hagan did not disassociate herself from Mr. Obama, but she did underline her differences with him: about the oversight of veterans hospitals, the Keystone XL pipeline debate, immigration and trade agreements. The National Journal has called her the most moderate senator in the nation.

It also turns out that school choice programs save taxpayer dollars, removing another huge policy barrier.

Tillis opposes net neutrality. In 2017, he co-sponsored the Restoring Internet Freedom Act, a bill to nullify the Federal Communications Commissions Open Internet Order. In March 2017, Tillis voted for the Broadband Consumer Privacy Proposal that removed the FCC’s internet privacy rules and allowed internet service providers to sell customers’ browsing history without their permission.

In May 2020, Tillis voted against an amendment to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to bar warrantless surveillance of web browser history. In April 2020, Tillis, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee’s intellectual property panel, wrote that he was concerned that the Internet Archive‘s “National Emergency Library” initiative, which temporarily expanded access to its 1.4 million-book collection during the COVID-19 shutdown, violated copyright law. He argued that the Internet Archive was deciding to “re-write copyright law at the expense of authors, artists, and creators” the Internet Archive argued that it was a licensed library in the state of California and that the Copyright Act of 1976 “provides flexibility to libraries and others to adjust to changing circumstances.”

Senator Thom Tillis, Republican of North Carolina, narrowly won re-election on Wednesday after a protracted vote count, capitalizing on unexpected party strength in a crucial swing state to defeat a Democrat damaged by late revelations of an extramarital affair.

Mr. Tillis, 60, had been one of Democrats top targets this year, a decidedly unpopular first-term Republican in a fast-growing and increasingly competitive state. But in the campaigns final weeks, he drew a pair of aces in the form of a Supreme Court vacancy and a personal scandal that dogged his opponent, Cal Cunningham.

With the vast majority of votes counted, Mr. Tillis was leading by just under 100,000 votes in an election that drew more voters and political spending than any in the states history. Mr. Tillis took a lead on election night and never lost it, but because of an influx of mail-in ballots, the result was not made official until Wednesday, long after most others were called.

Veterans know we cant trust Cal Cunningham, said an unnamed veteran in one ad run by Mr. Tilliss campaign.

In Blow To Democrats Republican Thom Tillis Wins Re

Democrat Cal Cunningham conceded to Republican Sen. Thom Tillis in the North Carolina race Tuesday, increasing the stakes in the outcomes of Georgia’s Senate races, which appear likely to determine control of the chamber.

NBC News had projected the race as too close to call, but declared Tillis the winner shortly after Cunningham conceded the race. The win gives Republicans 49 seats in the Senate, while Democrats have 48, with two races in Georgia and one in Alaska still outstanding.

I just called Senator Tillis to congratulate him on winning re-election to a second term in the U.S. Senate and wished him and his family the best in their continued service in the months and years ahead,” Cunningham said in a statement. The voters have spoken and I respect their decision.”

“While the results of this election suggest there remain deep political divisions in our state and nation,” he added, “the more complete story of our country lies in what unites us: our faith and sense of confidence in our democracy, our civic values and common humanity, our shared aspiration to care for one another, and our belief that we live in a country that does exceptional things.”

Democrats would need to win two of the three remaining Senate contests to gain control of the chamber with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris serving as the tie-breaking vote.

Tillis didn’t wait for network projections he declared victory after the polls closed on Election Day.

James Calvin “Cal” Cunningham, who turned 47 in August, is a former North Carolina Senator who was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Republican Sen Thom Tillis Defeats Democrat Cal Cunningham In North Carolina

Sen. Thom Tillis has won reelection in North Carolina, defeating Democrat Cal Cunningham and spoiling Democrats hopes of gaining a seat in what has been the most expensive Senate race in U.S. history.

Tillis, 60, delivered a devastating blow to Democrats, who had identified him as a target in their quest to take back the Senate majority. The one-term senator had low approval ratings in North Carolina and was unknown to one-third of the electorate. He had been consistently trailing Cunningham, 47, in the lead-up to November, stymied by President Donald Trumps poor numbers in the state.

Cunningham called Tillis to concede on Tuesday, a week after Election Day. The Associated Press has yet to officially call the race.

The voters have spoken and I respect their decision, Cunningham said in a statement after conceding the election. While the results of this election suggest there remain deep political divisions in our state and nation, the more complete story of our country lies in what unites us: our faith and sense of confidence in our democracy, our civic values and common humanity, our shared aspiration to care for one another, and our belief that we live in a country that does exceptional things.

A late-breaking scandal may have nonetheless helped Tillis to victory.

What followed was likely Tillis biggest break in the election, when texts between Cunningham and a woman in California showed that the Democratic candidate was involved in an extramarital affair.

    What Does Thom Tillis Want

The Republican candidate for Senate from North Carolina has shown a remarkable knack for moving up in the ranks, but he seems less sure what to do once he gets there.

Thom Tillis is a man in a hurry. He went from city councilor to North Carolina House speaker in just five years. Four months into his second term as speaker, he was running for U.S. Senate. The man who would hand the Republicans control of the Senate has been a lot of things in a short amount of time. And while he seems to know where hes going, its less clear that he knows what hell do once he gets there.

Tillis started his political career as a city councilor in Cornelius, a wealthy suburb of Charlotte. In 2006, after a single term, he upset a Republican incumbent in a primary for a state House seat. Like all freshmen, Tillis arrived in Raleigh as a backbencher, but he quickly impressed his Republican colleagues, who chose him freshman leader. In just his second term, he joined the House GOP leadership as minority whip.
