Whos Running For Republican President 2020

Senator Jeff Flake Of Arizona

What Does The Future Hold For The Republican Party?

Flake has become one of the most vocal Republican critics of Trump over the past year. He delivered a scorching rebuke of Trump from the Senate floor in October when he announced he would not seek re-election in 2018.

“I rise today with no small measure of regret,” he said. “Regret because of the state of our disunion. Regret because of the disrepair and destructiveness of our politics. Regret because of the indecency of our discourse. Regret because of the coarseness of our leadership.

“But we must never adjust to the present coarseness of our national dialogue with the tone set up at the top,” Flake continued. “We must never regard as normal the regular and casual undermining of our democratic norms and ideals. We must never meekly accept the daily sundering of our country. The personal attacks, the threats against principles, freedoms and institution, the flagrant disregard for truth and decency.”

“I will not be complicit,” Flake said near the end of his nearly 20-minute speech.

One might be forgiven for confusing this retirement speech with something else.

Flake also authored the book, Conscience of a Conservative: A Rejection of Destructive Politics and a Return To Principal, that detailed his critique of Trump in 2017.

On Sept. 20, de Blasio announced he was dropping out of the race. The mayor struggled in the polls and did not qualify for the third round of Democratic primary debates, hosted by ABC News.

“Getting out there, being able to hear people’s concerns, address them with new ideas has been an extraordinary experience,” he said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.””But I have to tell you, at the same time I feel like I’ve contributed all I can to this primary election and it’s clearly not my time. So I’m gonna end my presidential campaign, continue my work as mayor of New York City, and I’m gonna keep speaking up for working people.”

Trump Challengers: 10 Republicans Who Could Run For President In 2020

President Donald Trump faced down a crowded field of GOP presidential hopefuls in 2016 as a political outsider, but he could see a packed stage of Republican challengers again in 2020only as an incumbent this time.

Trump made few political friends during his ascent to the White House. He made headlines making fun of his competition, doling out nicknames”low energy Jeb Bush,” “Little Marco Rubio,” “Lyin’ Ted Cruz”along the way. The president’s diplomatic dexterity hasn’t noticeably improved much since taking office. Senators Rubio and Cruz have improved their relationship with Trump since his inauguration, but other lawmakers from within his party have emerged as outspoken critics, fueling speculation he may face a stiff presidential primary race in 2020.

Here are 10 Republicans who may challenge Trump:

Former Rep Joe Walsh R

Conservative firebrand former Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh announced in August on ABC’s “This Week” that he was launching a long-shot Republican presidential primary challenge against the president. Walsh was the second Republican to jump into the primary to challenge Trump.

When ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos pointed out the massive uphill climb Walsh had in front of him in the primary, thanks to Trump’s overwhelmingly high approval rating within the party, the controversial former congressman argued that conservatives should have an alternative to the president, saying, “I’m running because he’s unfit somebody needs to step up and there needs to be an alternative. The country is sick of this guy’s tantrum — he’s a child.”

The case for an all female Democratic ticket in 2020

He campaigned for 202 days, but failed to gain traction at the national level, did not reach 2% in any of the Democratic National Committee qualifying polls and only made one debate stage. He suspended his campaign on Dec. 2 and said in a statement, While there were many obstacles we could not have anticipated when entering this race, it has become clear that in this moment, I wonât be able to break through to the top tier of this still-crowded field of candidates.

Who Are The Republicans Challenging Trump For 2020 Nomination

Only one candidate is now vying to defeat Trump for Republican nomination in the 2020 presidential race.

While the pool of Democrats vying for the partys presidential nomination was among the largest and most diverse in the history of the United States, President Donald Trump faced a much smaller cadre of challengers for the Republican ticket in 2020.

After two Republicans dropped out, only one opponent remains in the race against Trump. Thats in contrast to the three remaining contenders in the Democratic field, which once had more than two dozen candidates.

In a statement in April, the Republican National Convention said the Republican Party is firmly behind Trump and any effort to challenge the presidents nomination is bound to go absolutely nowhere, prompting criticism that Republican leaders are making it impossible for another candidate to succeed.

Here is a look at the now sole Republican challenging Trump.

The progressive candidate who ran against corruption and pumped out more than 50 policy proposals during her campaign, suspended her run after a lackluster finish in all four early voting states and on Super Tuesday where she even came up short in her home state. Her best finish was in Iowa, where she came in third.

I will not be running for president in 2020. But I guarantee I will stay in the fight for the hard-working folks across the country whove got the short end of the stick, over and over, she told reporters at a media availability in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on March 5.

Sen Marco Rubio Of Florida

Rubio, 51, has come out hot after cruising to a third term in November, castigating GOP leaders for totally blowing the midterms.

“We have a historically unpopular Dem President, record inflation, a violent crime wave & total chaos at the border & not only did we fail to win a majority, we lost a seat. And the Senate GOP response is going to be to make no changes?” Rubio fumed in a December 7 Twitter post.

His anger hadn’t abated when Insider caught up with him at the US Capitol.

“I don’t know how you come back from what we have just encountered and conclude that the status quo and business as usual is how we want to proceed,” Rubio said of the need for drastic changes within the GOP.

While conceding that he doesn’t have “all those answers,” Rubio suggested that Senate Republicans take a hard look at “the mechanics of elections, policy, the legislative agenda, and all of that.”

“I think that’s something we should all be involved in talking about,” Rubio said of the sorely needed soul searching.

Rubio, who is of Cuban descent, was speaker of the Florida House before heading to Washington. He has sponsored numerous bills that have become law, including doubling the child tax credit and co-authoring the Paycheck Protection Program that helped keep small businesses afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Perhaps voters will learn more about future plans in his forthcoming book, “Decades of Decadence.”

The 2020 United States presidential election was the 59th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. The Democratic ticket of former vice presidentJoe Biden and the junior U.S. senator from California Kamala Harris defeated the incumbent RepublicanpresidentDonald Trump and incumbent vice president Mike Pence. The election took place against the backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic and related recession. It was the first election since 1992 in which the incumbent president failed to win a second term. The election saw the highest voter turnout by percentage since 1900, with each of the two main tickets receiving more than 74 million votes, surpassing Barack Obama‘s record of 69.5 million votes from 2008. Biden received more than 81 million votes, the most votes ever cast for a candidate in a U.S. presidential election.

Trump’s Refusal To Concede

Early in the morning on November 4, with vote counts still going on in many states, Trump claimed he had won. For weeks after the networks had called the election for Biden, Trump refused to acknowledge that Biden had won. Biden described Trump’s refusal as “an embarrassment”. In the wake of the election, the General Services Administration refused to formally acknowledge Biden’s victory, and the White House ordered government agencies not to cooperate with the Biden transition team in any way. Starting in 1896, when William Jennings Bryan established a precedent of formal concession by sending a congratulatory telegram to President-elect William McKinley, every losing major party presidential candidate has formally conceded.

Trump acknowledged Biden’s victory in a tweet on November 15, although he refused to concede and blamed his loss on fraud, stating: “He won because the Election was Rigged.” Trump then tweeted: “I concede NOTHING! We have a long way to go.”

In a June 2021 interview with Sean Hannity, Trump stated that “we didn’t win” and said that he wished President Biden success in international diplomacy, which Forbes declared as Trump ” as close as he’s ever been to conceding his 2020 election loss.”

The Midterm Elections Biggest Losing Bets: Two Measures Seeking Sports Gambling In California

Nearly a half-billion dollars were poured into campaigns aimed at bringing sports gambling to California at tribal casinos and online, in what turned out to be the biggest losing bets of this political season.

Propositions 26 and 27 not only lost they went down in overwhelming numbers rarely seen in modern 50-50 politics.

Proposition 26, which sought to bring point spreads to Native American casinos, was rejected by 70.1% to 29.1%, with nearly all precincts reporting, tallies showed Wednesday. Meanwhile, Proposition 27, the measure that sought to legalize online sports betting, went down to even greater defeat, 83.3% to 16.7%.

This might go down in history in the Michael Bloomberg Hall of Fame, said Dan Schnur, a campaign finance reform advocate, poking fun at Bloombergs brief $1 billion presidential run in 2020.

Former South Bend Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg

Buttigieg first made a national name for himself with a bid for Democratic National Committee chair in 2017. He was the youngest candidate in the 2020 race, and could have become the first gay man to be elected president.

While he trailed many of his opponents in name recognition early on, Buttigieg argued that he could represent a generational shift in government, and speaks frequently of issues that will affect younger Americans, such as tax reform, gun control and climate change.

Proven Playbook For Any Democrat Who Wants To Beat Trump In 2020

United States presidential election of 2020, American presidential election held on November 3, 2020, in the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic, in which Democrat Joe Biden, formerly the 47th vice president of the United States, defeated the incumbent president, Republican Donald Trump, to become the 46th U.S. president. Biden garnered more than 81 million votes to win the popular vote by more than seven million ballots and to triumph in the Electoral College by a count of 306 to 232. Refusing to acknowledge Bidens victory, Trump claimed without evidence that the election had been stolen from him through fraud and mounted unsuccessful legal challenges in several states that he had lost. Widespread acceptance of Trumps prolonged baseless insistence that the election had been stolen ultimately led to the storming of the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021, the day that the Electoral College results were to be ceremoniously reported to a joint session of Congress. Identifying the provocative speech that Trump delivered to supporters before the insurrectionist mob invaded the Capitol as inciting violence against the Government of the United States, the House of Representatives subsequently impeached the lame duck president.

Certification Of Electoral College Votes

The 117th United States Congress first convened on January 3, 2021, and was scheduled to count and certify the Electoral College votes on January 6, 2021. There were 222 Democrats and 212 Republicans in the House there were 51 Republicans, 46 Democrats, and two independents in the Senate. Several Republican members of the House and Senate said they would raise objections to the reported count in several states, meeting the requirement that if a member from each body objects, the two houses must meet separately to discuss whether to accept the certified state vote. A statement from the vice president’s office said Pence welcomes the plan by Republicans to “raise objections and bring forward evidence” challenging the election results.

On December 28, 2020, Representative Louie Gohmert filed a lawsuit in Texas challenging the constitutionality of the Electoral Count Act of 1887, claiming Vice President Pence has the power and ability to unilaterally decide which slates of electoral votes get counted. The case was dismissed on January 1, 2021, for lack of both standing and jurisdiction. The plaintiffs filed an appeal, and the appeal was dismissed by a three-judge panel of the appeals court the next day.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott

Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott, endorsed by Trump in his run for a third four-year term, fended off Democratic former U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke in the midterms.

Abbott, 65, has pursued increasingly conservative policies during his second term, opposing COVID-19 vaccine and mask mandates. He signed the most restrictive abortion ban of any U.S. state into law and is building a new barrier on the border with Mexico.

Although long rumored to be a potential 2024 candidate, Abbott has not addressed the issue publicly for some time.

Biden’s Lead Widens Over Trump In A Head

Enthusiasm for Trump’s third bid for the White House within the GOP has significantly ebbed in recent months, the USA TODAY/Suffolk survey finds.

In July, 60% of Republicans wanted Trump to run again. In October, that number had dipped to 56%. Now it has fallen to 47%, an almost-even split with the 45% who don’t want him to run for a third time.

The polls taken in July and December were of registered voters. The poll in October was of likely midterm voters.

Trump is viewed less favorably by his partisans as well. The percentage of Republicans who see him favorably has dropped from 75% in October to 64% in December. His unfavorable rating has risen to 23% from 18%.

Among all voters, Trump has fallen further behind President Joe Biden in a hypothetical head-to-head. Now, Biden would win a general-election matchup by 47% to 40%. In October, Biden also led but by a narrower margin, 46%-42%.

Democrats Hold Their Own In The Suburbs

Watch Lindsey Grahamâs message to Trump about running in 2024

In 2018, the suburbs delivered Democrats the House majority. In 2020, they vaulted Joe Biden to the presidency.

And in 2022, suburbs across the country went a long way to helping Democrats avoid a significant red wave.

Republicans may still win the House, but if the 2022 election was going to be a red wave, it was likely to come through suburban victories that have not materialized yet.

In a district made up of the Kansas City suburbs, CNN projected Democrat Sharice Davids would win reelection. In Ohio, CNN projected two suburban wins: Democrat Greg Landsman defeated Republican Rep. Steve Chabot in a district that included Cincinnati and some of the surrounding suburbs and Democratic state Rep. Emilia Sykes defeated Republican Madison Gesiotto Gilbert in a district that includes areas around Cleveland and all of Akron. In Illinois, CNN projected that Democratic incumbent Lauren Underwood would win reelection against Republican Scott Gryder in the Chicago suburbs. And in Virginia, CNN projected Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger would win reelection, largely because of the votes she picked up from the suburbs of Washington, DC.

Hickenlooper joined the field in early March, seeking to parlay his success in growing Colorado’s economy while passing environmental regulations and gun control laws into a successful presidential campaign. In a launch video, he spoke further of healing the nation’s political divisions.

“One thing I’ve shown I can do, again and again, is create teams of amazingly talented people and really address these issues that are the critical issues facing this country,”he said on“Good Morning America.”

After A Disappointing Midterm Election Republicans Are Eager To Find A Leader Who Will Help Them Win In 2024

The room is set and delegates begin to arrive for the first day of the Republican National Convention on Aug. 24, 2020, in Charlotte, N.C.

After disappointing midterm results, several candidates have emerged as possible challengers to Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, who has run the party since 2017. The RNC is set to vote on a party chair at its annual meeting this January in California, when the committee will decide who will lead the party through the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

Potential candidates are already laying the groundwork to earn the votes of the 168 committee members who will choose the next chair. Some committee members are publicly doubling down on staying with the leadership of McDaniel, who is running for a fourth consecutive term. She recently announced a postelection review of the Republican midterm campaign strategy.

Other prominent Republicans and influential donors and are calling for a change in leadership due to the disappointing election results. Grassroots activists are attempting to recruit Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y., who lost his race for governor last month. Harmeet Dhillon, an attorney and Republican committeewoman, announced she plans to run for the position. Mike Lindell, CEO of MyPillow and a supporter of former President Donald Trump, has also announced his candidacy for the RNC chair.
