Biden And Trump Step Into A Pennsylvania Proxy War

After criss-crossing the country for the midterms, Joe Biden and Donald Trump will find themselves ending the campaign on common ground in Pennsylvania.

The must-win battleground has emerged as a proxy fight between the two men. Its the rare state where both are appearing, culminating in final weekend showdowns when Biden is expected to join former President Barack Obama and the Democratic ticket while Trump rallies with the Republicans in the western part of the state.

The stops foreshadow a likely 2024 rematch and escalate the posturing between the two thats been simmering since Biden vanquished Trump two years ago, thanks in large part to reclaiming Pennsylvania.

While their paths seldom cross so obviously, Biden has used Trumps probable return to ground his own reasoning for potentially running again. Trump, meanwhile, is using Bidens shaky standing in the polls as a springboard for himself, despite myriad investigations and legal troubles following the former president.

Their teams are acutely aware that the success of any future campaign would again heavily rest on success in Pennsylvania. They are keen on keeping roots there. And yet, the late campaign swing through the state also threatens to showcase their current vulnerabilities.

As one of the countrys most pivotal swing states, Pennsylvania grabs outsized interest from any potential presidential aspirant. Biden and Trump, who beat Hillary Clinton there in 2016, are no different.

The Former President Remains A Potent Force In Republican Politics

But Mr. Trump never referred to abortion, exemplifying how many Republican leaders have been quiet on the issue for fear of repercussions in the midterm elections. Dr. Oz mentioned the issue briefly, saying: Life starts at conception. Im a heart surgeon. I value it.

In his speech, Mr. Trump aired a fresh round of grievances about the 2020 election and taunts for his political enemies, directing several at Dr. Ozs chief rival in the Senate race, the former hedge fund executive David McCormick. Hes not MAGA, Mr. Trump said, referring to Mr. McCormick as a liberal Wall Street Republican.

The former presidents other targets included the actor Alec Baldwin Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican leader and President Biden. Mr. Trump played a video of Mr. Bidens verbal miscues on several large screens.

Dr. Oz, 61, presented himself as an early accepter of medical therapies promoted by Mr. Trump for the treatment of Covid-19, several of which were discredited by medical authorities as lacking efficacy and fraught with potential risk.

Trump 2024 Newly Revealed Pennsylvania Rally Fuels Talk Of Presidential Announcement

Trump in Bidens Scranton backyard on Labor Day weekend

Former President Donald Trump announced an upcoming rally in northeastern Pennsylvania in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area to take place over Labor Day weekend.

The event is being billed as a rally to support the entire Trump ticket in the state including Dr. Ozs U.S. Senate campaign and the campaign of Doug Mastriano, candidate for Pennsylvania Governor.

The timing and location of the rally, however, will fuel rampant speculation that Trump could be planning to announce a 2024 Presidential campaign over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

The location, specifically in President Bidens backyard of Scranton, also would serve as a great backdrop to contrast Trumps America First policies with those of the failed Biden administration.

As reported days ago, Trump has been mulling when to launch a 2024 presidential campaign with an eye leaning toward sometime near or after Labor Day in September.

After the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago, the chorus for Trump to strike sooner rather than later became deafening among his inner circle urging him to speed up the timeline on a potential 2024 announcement:

Trump has previously said that a 2024 presidential announcement, in his mind, is a matter of when rather than if.

Trump Returns To Pennsylvania

Trump in Hershey Pennsylvania DV Journal

Former President Donald Trump will head to Wilkesbarre, Pennsylvania, this week to campaign for two MAGA-backed candidates: gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastraiano and Senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz.

Both candidates are struggling in the polls after a group of Pennsylvania GOP state officials endorsed Democratic gubernatorial candidate and the states attorney general Josh Shapiro out of concern that Mastrianos views are too extreme.

Meanwhile, Oz has had a rough summer on the campaign trail, especially in the aftermath of a grocery shopping gaffe involving crudité. According to an August Franklin & Marshall poll, Fetterman is beating Oz 43% to 30% while Shapiro is ahead against Mastriano 44% to 33%.

Trump carried Pennsylvania in 2016 the first time a Republican won Pennsylvania in a presidential election since George Bush in 1988. But he lost the state to Biden in 2020. Trumps MAGA movement will be tested in Pennsylvania as both Mastriano and Oz are seen as direct offshoots of the former president.

Trump 2024 Still Formidable

DeSantis or no DeSantis, stopping Trump in the primary is likely to prove challenging.

Erie County Republican Party Chair Tom Eddy said that while Trump energizes Democrats as much as his own supporters, the former president continues to stockpile millions and enjoy a loyal base.

“If Trump puts his name in the hat, he’s going to be a very difficult person to beat in the primaries,” Eddy said. “That’s all there is to it. And if you’re a conservative, you’re going to have to support him or you’re going to take a beating.”

He added that he believes fellow Republicans are “too simplistic” in finding a scapegoat for 2022 losses: “They’re too quick to blame everything on Trump.”

Rebecca Katz, senior adviser for the Fetterman campaign, said she considered the Pennsylvania midterms as inconclusive if viewed as a referendum on Trumpism.

My biggest worry is that Democrats will look at the results and think we’re done here. And we have so much work to do, Katz said. Theres a lot of candidates who are filled with hate who got pretty big percentages.

Joe Corrigan, a Democratic strategist in Pennsylvania, would disagree.

The Pennsylvania electorate is Trumped out, he said. I just think people are sick and tired of it.

Because of this, Corrigan said, he hopes Trump runs for president.

Our folks were able to make the argument that Republicans in Harrisburg, in the Legislature, are just as bad as Donald Trump and just as bad as Dr. Oz and just as bad as Doug Mastriano, he said.

No ‘red Wave’ In 2022

Laughlin a moderate Republican who has supported marijuana legalization and maintaining current abortion laws in Pennsylvania is among those who are blaming Trump for the “red wave” that petered into a “red ripple” this month. Democrats largely avoided the “midterm curse” as Republicans failed to flip the Senate and are expected to regain just a slim majority in the House of Representatives.

In Pennsylvania, GOP performance was especially poor: Though Republicans held their seven-seat majority in the state Senate, Trump-backed candidates for governor and U.S. Senate were beaten, and Democrats may retake the state House for the first time in more than a decade.

“One only needs to look at the state of Pennsylvania from a national perspective and see that we got our clocks cleaned in the governor’s race because we ran an election denier that Trump supported in the primary,” Laughlin said.

“If you look at this logically, a lot of voters would say, well, you know, the Dobbs decision weighed heavily on these races, as well,” he added, referring to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in June that reversed constitutional protections for abortion access. “But, quite frankly, who appointed the judges that overturned Roe?”

Trump named three conservative justices all from a Republican Party wish list at least in part for their pro-life views to the Supreme Court.

Commonwealth Leaders Fund treasurer Matt Brouillette was similarly critical of the former president.

PHILADELPHIA Pennsylvania once stocked D.C. with a steady stream of establishment Republicans. Now, in the wake of Donald Trumps reelection defeat, its better known for its GOP hard-liners among them, Scott Perry, the congressman who recently made headlines for his behind-the-scenes efforts to assist Trumps efforts to overturn the 2020 election resultsin Georgia.

GOP state legislative leaders called on Republican congressional members to object to the Electoral College results or delay their certification. Every House Republican in Pennsylvanias congressional delegation, save one, obliged, voting to invalidate their states Electoral College votes.

State Sen. Doug Mastriano, a potential gubernatorial candidate in 2022, traveled to the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 and even advertised a bus to take protesters there. In the weeks after the deadly riot, a right-wing state representative, Daryl Metcalfe, that the FBI called his office asking about the day of the insurrection and referred to the agencys tip line as a snitch line.

Biden’s Trip To Wilkes

Trump hopes to take attention from Biden in PA

Trumps visit follows Bidens Tuesday trip to Wilkes University to speak about gun violence prevention. Shapiro, U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey and Gov. Tom Wolf were in attendance, among other local elected officials. Fetterman was not, but Biden said they had spoken and called him a hell of a guy. A powerful voice for working people.

Biden spoke about his Safer America Plan, which would help communities recruit, hire, and train nationwide more than 100,000 additional officers accountable officers for community policing.

He also touted the bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which he signed in June. The law expands background checks for gun buyers under age 21 and incentivizes red flag laws, among other measures.

But we’re not stopping here. I’m determined to ban assault weapons in this country, he said. Determined. I did it once before, and I’ll do it again.

He described the damage caused by bullets fired from AR-15s, noting that some parents in Uvalde, Texas, had to supply DNA as part of identification efforts after a mass shooter killed 19 children and two adults at an elementary school.

With a reference to the Poconos, Biden questioned why anyone would need these weapons to hunt. My dad used to love to hunt in the Poconos when we lived in Scranton, he said. How many deer or bear are wearing Kevlar vests, huh?

Former President Trump is heading back to Pennsylvania for the third time this year and just days ahead of the November midterms for a rally with two of his endorsed candidates.

Trumps Save America PAC said he will be at the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Latrobe on Nov. 5 to stump for his endorsees in the state, including GOP Senate hopeful Mehmet Oz and Republican gubernatorial nominee Doug Mastriano.

Tickets for the Latrobe rally can be reserved on the Save America rally website. Users may only register one ticket per mobile number per event. All tickets are subject to a first come first serve basis.

Doors for the vent open at 2 p.m.

The announcement comes one day after Oz and his Democratic challenger, Lt. Gov. John Fetterman , went head-to-head in their first and only televised debate, which showcased the lingering effects of a Fettermans stroke earlier this year.

Fetterman and Oz have polled within the margin of error in several recent surveys, and Trumps decision to come to the Keystone State underscores the resources Republicans and Democrats continue to pour into the race.

Will Trumps 3rd Presidential Run Mean A Primary Fight In Pennsylvania

Former President Donald Trumps announcement that hes running for president in 2024 means that Pennsylvania will certainly land in the national spotlight again.

Trump has never backed off his lies and conspiracies about the validity of Pennsylvanias 2020 election result, which saw him lose to President Joe Biden by 80,555 votes, and raised doubts about last weeks midterm election.

And, Pennsylvanias perpetual swing-state status will mean Trump will be paying close attention to it, just like hes done since 2016.

In fact, Trump doubled down in the general election this year by endorsing governor candidate Doug Mastriano, a far-right state senator who also denies the a 2020 election results. Mastriano lost to Democratic Attorney General Josh Shapiro by 14 points, or more than 767,000 votes.

Trump-endorsed U.S. Senate candidate Mehmet Oz kept his distance from the election conspiracies, but still lost to Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman by 4.5 points, nearly 239,000 votes.

Those losses here and in other swing states have sullied Trumps reputation among some Republicans who blame him for stymying the vaunted congressional red wave that never materialized.

One anonymous GOP official told RealClearPennsylvania.com that Trump has become toxic now. The party needs to move on from Trump, the official said.

In a crowded field, Mastriano won with 44% of the vote.

PHILADELPHIA Former President Donald Trump is singling out Pennsylvania for his first rally of the general election on Saturday, where two of his most besieged candidates in the country are threatening to tarnish his record as a kingmaker.

The fact that he has zeroed in on the swing state for the politically symbolic Labor Day weekend, the unofficial kickoff of the midterms, demonstrates how pivotal Pennsylvania is to his success this year and, more likely than not, a future presidential campaign.

Trumps visit to the state also signals that he has prioritized coming to the aid of Senate candidate Mehmet Oz and gubernatorial hopeful Doug Mastriano, who have lagged behind their Democratic opponents in polling and fundraising.

But President Joe Biden is campaigning in Pennsylvania during the long weekend, too, an acknowledgment that the races here are far from over.

Both of them appearing so soon around Labor Day not only says Pennsylvania is a battleground in 2022, but its a battleground in 2024, said Celinda Lake, a pollster for Bidens 2020 presidential campaign. Both of them want to run in an environment where their candidates have won in 2022.

Donald Trump: What We Learned From His Rally In Pennsylvania

Donald Trump has called President Joe Biden an “enemy of the state” at his first rally since the FBI searched his Florida resort for sensitive files.

Speaking to thousands of supporters in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, the ex-president accused Mr Biden of weaponising the FBI against him.

Mr Trump branded the search “one of the most shocking abuses of power by any administration in American history”.

He was in the state to promote two Republican candidates.

Dr Mehmet Oz is running for the US Senate, and state Senator Doug Mastriano is in the race to become Pennsylvania’s next governor.

Both spoke only briefly – as always, the rally on Saturday night was really about one person: the headliner.

Mr Trump, 76, spent the first part of his nearly two-hour speech criticising the FBI search early last month.

FBI agents conducting the search found dozens of empty folders marked as classified, and top secret files were recovered from his personal office.

Mr Trump, who is being investigated over his handling of classified records, denies wrongdoing.

The former president also returned to other familiar themes at the Pennsylvania rally: false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him, attacks on rivals in the Democratic Party, and promises to “save our country”.

Several times, he called for people who deal drugs to receive the death penalty.

Here are four key things you need to know about Donald Trump’s rally.
