Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., told reporters Wednesday that the repeated rounds of votes for the speakership were good for democracy.” Norman joined 19 other Republican lawmakers on Wednesday in opposing McCarthy’s nomination, ensuring the voting continued.

During a fifth round of votes, Norman backed GOP Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida.

Mccarthy Opponents Say No Deal Yet As Meeting Continues

Republican Primary is set for Naperville Township voters on February 28 ...

McCarthy is meeting behind closed doors in the Capitol with some of his closest allies and members of the opposition to try to hammer out an agreement.

Members are coming and going from the huddle, and despite hours of discussions, the two sides appear no closer to a deal.

Im just saying we listened. You know the devils in the details, Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., a vocal McCarthy critic, said as he left the meeting.

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, another McCarthy opponent, said he is open to whatever will give me the power to defend my constituents against this godforsaken city. Among other things, Roy pointed to Congress last-minute passage of a $1.7 trillion spending bill last month that avoided a government shutdown. That bill is just exactly what is wrong with this place.

Roy said a big focus of the meeting is working through some misunderstandings between the two sides.

Can I Vote In The Primaries

Choosing the person who could be chosen to leadPrimaries are an important part of the democratic process, but certain states have laws around who is eligible to vote in them, often around voters registered political parties.

What are the primaries?

Primaries are elections that allow political parties to determine the candidate who will go on to represent them in later elections.

These can happen at any level, but get the most attention in the two years ahead of a Presidential election, when voters determine which candidates will represent the Democratic and Republican parties in the main election in November.

Open vs. Closed Primaries

Open Primaries allow any registered voter to pick the candidate that will represent their party as the nominee in the upcoming election.

Closed Primaries require that the voter only pick the candidate from the voters registered party. For example, a voter registered as a Republican could only pick their choice for the Republican nominee.

Some states allow voters registered as independents to align themselves with a party on the day of the Primary Election so they may vote for a party candidate of their choosing.

Mccarthy Backer Says Speaker Vote A Fight Long In The Making

    Isabelle Schmeler

After six failed attempts to install McCarthy as speaker of the House, a majority of Republicans continue to stand by his nomination even as more than a dozen members of their own party backed Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., instead.

Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., a McCarthy supporter, says now is the time to have a decadeslong debate within the Republican Party out in the open as frustrations broil with fellow members of his party who he says are delaying the start to the legislative agenda.

A lot of those guys have never served in a legislative body before, Comer, who would likely chair the House Oversight Committee in the new Congress, said in an interview on Meet the Press NOW. Theyve never been in the majority. So they dont understand that no ones ever going to get 100% of what you want. You just have to make your best case and fight for the best deal you can get.

Early Exit Polls: What’s On Voters’ Minds As They Go To The Polls

Primary election results bring new clues about Trumps power in GOP l GMA

President Joe Biden’s approval rating is underwater that is, his disapproval his higher than his approval in all 11 key battleground states where CBS News conducted statewide surveys: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin.

In each of these states, voters have negative views of the nation’s economy.

Right now, in most of the Senate battleground states, the issue of inflation is outpacing abortion in terms of the importance of the issue to voters. But in Pennsylvania, early exit polling shows abortion outpaces inflation as a concern for voters.

Voters also have Senate control on their minds in each of the Senate battlegrounds where CBS News has conducted exit polls, voters said control of the Senate is important to their vote.

In Georgia’s Senate race, where Democrat Raphael Warnock is defending his seat against a challenge from Republican Herschel Walker, voters said the qualities voters are looking for are honesty and integrity, as well as a candidate who shares their values.

In Pennsylvania, the electorate is divided on whether Democrat John Fetterman is healthy enough to serve effectively as a U.S. senator. Right now, there is also a bit more concern that Republican Mehmet Oz has not lived in the state long enough to serve effectively.

Republicans Fight To Win A House Seat In Rhode Island After Two Decades

Voters in Rhode Island are deciding if Democrats should keep the House seat Rep. Jim Langevin held for over 20 years.

Allan Fung, who’s the former mayor of Cranston, Rhode Island, is running against Democratic candidate Seth Magazine focusing on the economy a topic used by Republicans against Democrats during the campaign trail.

Magazine has been Rhode Island’s General Treasurer since 2015 and has been campaigning in favor of reproductive rights and against pro-Trump narratives.

Conversely to some Republican candidates, Fung said he is not a 2020 election denier. The GOP candidate told CBS News’ Ed O’Keefe he recognizes Joe Biden as the “legitimate president.”

According to Fung, former President Donald Trump hasn’t endorsed him and it’s not something he is focusing on. Other GOP big names like Kevin McCarthy and Chris Christie have campaigned with him.

Rhode Island hasn’t sent a Republican to Congress since Sen. Lincoln Chafee’s reelection in 2000.

Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthy Says Gop Will Take The House Back

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy addressed an election night crowd in Washington, D.C., vowing that Republicans will “take the House back.”

As supporters cheered, McCarthy said they “will be in the majority and Nancy Pelosi will be in the minority.”

Pelosi Says House Should Allow Members To Be Sworn In Before Settling Speaker Vote

    Kate Santaliz and Summer Concepcion

Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the most recent House speaker, told reporters that she thinks the courteous thing to do is to allow members to be sworn in prior to the speaker vote so that their children can be there when it happens.

Lets just be courteous to the families on both sides of the aisle, Pelosi said. Republicans were still jockeying Wednesday morning to come to a consensus on a new House speaker. Meanwhile, many new members from both parties spent Tuesday on the floor with their families, waiting in vain to be sworn in. Some brought their children, including babies.

Pelosi was then asked how it would be procedurally possible to swear in members without a speaker.

Well, the speaker is sworn in without a speaker. So, the other members can be as well, she said.

Pelosi criticized Republican leadership, saying shes thankful that the GOP wasnt in the majority on the day of the Jan. 6 attack because that was a day you had to be organized to stave off what was happening to save our democracy, to certify the election of the president.

Poll: Trump Dominates 2024 Republican Primary Field

Pulliam Wins Second Republican Governor Primary Straw Poll as Field ...

Former President Trump is the clear favorite to win the GOPs 2024 presidential nomination if he decides to mount another bid for the White House, according to a Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey released exclusively to The Hill on Monday.

Nearly 6 in 10 Republican voters surveyed 58 percent say they would vote to put the former president back on the ballot in 2024, suggesting the party is ready and willing to give Trump another chance after his 2020 loss to President Biden.

No other potential 2024 Republican candidate comes close to matching Trump. Former Vice President Mike Pence notches a distant second place with 13 percent support among GOP voters, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a rising star in the Republican Party, scored only 9 percent support in a primary field that includes Trump.

Meanwhile, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and Sen. Marco Rubio are tied for fourth place, garnering 3 percent support each.

While defeated candidates rarely come back, Trump has a strong lead in the Republican primary especially among the most dedicated Republicans, Mark Penn, the co-director of the Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey, said.

Since leaving the White House in January, Trump has both publicly and privately toyed with the notion of mounting a 2024 presidential run.

Of course, the 2024 Republican presidential primary contest is still years away and its possible that Trump ultimately decides against a run.

How Many Votes Does The House Speaker Need To Win It Depends

McCarthy has spent the past two months being asked about one number: 218.

That’s because 218 is the simple majority of the House when all 435 members are present. And a person needs a simple majority to get elected speaker.

But the math for McCarthy is actually more complicated.

There are only 434 House members in Washington, that’s because one Democrat has died since Election Day, creating a vacancy. One vacancy still requires 218 votes for a simple majority.

But McCarthy and his allies say that should a member vote “present” that lowers the number of members considered “present and voting” and therefore shrinks the size of the simple majority.

On the fourth ballot, Rep. Spartz did just that. If she continues voting present, a speaker may only need 217 votes to win. McCarthy was still short and because Spartz had previously been voting for him, he actually lost a vote. But McCarthy and his allies believe that if they can get enough of his detractors to switch to “present” instead of voting for someone else, he will be able to win with a smaller simple majority.

One problem? So far, Democratic Leader Jeffries has more votes than McCarthy so if the threshold kept falling, it could elect the Democrat speaker instead.

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, nominated Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., for speaker. Donalds switched his vote from McCarthy to Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, on the third round of votes on Tuesday.

Roy praised Donalds for being a solid conservative and family man.

Roy then noted that its the first time in history that two Black Americans have been nominated for speaker, which drew a standing ovation from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

    New Jersey 7th District

Incumbent Democratic Rep. Tom Malinowski flipped the 7th Congressional District, which extends along Central New Jersey. The district went for President Joe Biden by almost 10 points in 2020, but Malinowski was only elected by a one-point margin, according to NJ.com. The district has been redrawn and Mr. Biden would have only carried the new distrcit by 3.9 points.

Former state Senate leader Tom Kean is challenging Malinowski for the second time. Kean has sought to tie Malinowski to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Mr. Biden on inflation. In the redistricting, several deep-red counties were added, making the race more difficult for Malinowski.

Malinowski has tried to tie Kean to Trump and the “ascendant wing of the Republican Party” of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, according to NJ Spotlight News.
