WASHINGTON With Donald J. Trumps announcement that he is officially running to reclaim the Oval Office he falsely asserts was stolen from him, President Biden is ready to implement what some of his top aides refer to as the Trump project.

Mr. Biden has spent much of the last year putting a fearsome face on the ultra-MAGA agenda, taking aim at Republican senators, governors and state lawmakers. Now, he will return the focus to his once and future foil Mr. Make America Great Again himself.

Inside the West Wing, a small group of presidential advisers has been working to develop a plan for how Mr. Biden and the White House will respond to what they expect will be a constant stream of invective from the former president now that he is formally a candidate.

Mr. Trump started the attacks almost immediately in his speech on Tuesday night announcing his presidential run, as he complained about Biden and the radical-left lunatics running our government right into the ground.

The White House Released Brief Excerpts Of Bidens Remarks

President Bidens full speech is expected to begin at 8 p.m. Eastern and last about 25 to 30 minutes. The White House released three brief excerpts:

So tonight I have come here to the place where it all began to speak plainly to the nation about the threats we face. About the power we have in our own hands to meet those threats. And about the incredible future that lies in front of us if only we choose it.

MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards. Backwards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love.

For a long time, weve reassured ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed. But it is not. We have to defend it. Protect it. Stand up for it. Each and every one of us.

Trumps Foreign Policy Moments

Donald J. Trumps presidency marked a profound departure from U.S. leadership in areas such as trade and diplomacy, as well as an across-the-board toughening of immigration policies.

In his inaugural address, President Donald J. Trump announces an America First approach to foreign policy and trade, which centers on reducing U.S. trade deficits and rebalancing burden sharing within alliances. Trump promises to unite the civilized world against radical Islamic terrorism and emphasizes that it is the right of all nations to put their own interests first.

Trump directs the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative to withdraw the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a twelve-country, Asia-focused trade agreement the United States had championed under the Barack Obama administration.

The president signs an executive order banning nationals of six Muslim-majority countries from traveling to the United States for ninety days. The order, later amended to include an additional two countries, also indefinitely freezes refugee intake from Syria. Days later, a federal judge in Washington State blocks part of the order, beginning a series of judicial challenges. That same week, Trump signs two other executive orders concerning immigration. One directs federal funds to the construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, and the other bars so-called sanctuary cities from receiving federal grants.

At Once Diminished And Dominating Trump Begins His Next Act

President Trump Just Became the 1st Sitting President to Address This ...

The former president spoke on Saturday to the North Carolina Republican convention as he resumes political speeches and rallies.

By Annie Karni and Maggie Haberman

GREENVILLE, N.C. Donald J. Trump, the former president of the United States, commutes to New York City from his New Jersey golf club to work out of his office in Trump Tower at least once a week, slipping in and out of Manhattan without attracting much attention.

The place isnt as he left it. Many of his longtime employees are gone. So are most of the family members who once worked there with him and some of the fixtures of the place, like his former lawyer Michael D. Cohen, who have since turned on him. Mr. Trump works there, mostly alone, with two assistants and a few body men.

His political operation has also dwindled to a ragtag team of former advisers who are still on his payroll, reminiscent of the bare-bones cast of characters that helped lift a political neophyte to his unlikely victory in 2016. Most of them go days or weeks without interacting with Mr. Trump in person.

But when he spoke on Saturday night to the North Carolina Republican convention in what was billed as the resumption of his rallies and speeches, Mr. Trump was both a diminished figure and an oversized presence in American life, with a remarkable and many say dangerous hold on his party.

Jason Miller, an adviser to the former president, agreed on Mr. Trumps control over the party.

A New Poll Offers The President And Democrats A Reprieve

President Biden will deliver his speech Thursday night as new polling suggests his partys fortunes and his own popularity have improved two months before elections that will determine who controls Congress for the second half of his term.

A poll on Thursday morning found Democrats with a small lead over Republicans when voters were asked which party they preferred in their own districts. Five months ago, Republicans held a larger lead over Democrats in the same survey.

The poll also found some improvement in Mr. Bidens approval rating, which rose to 45 percent from 42 percent in the papers previous poll in March. That could mean that the president is less of a drag on his partys candidates than some Democratic strategists had feared in the spring.

But Mr. Biden and his allies still face a difficult task: retaining control of the House and the Senate at a time of high inflation and deep concerns among a majority of voters about the direction of the country under the leadership of the president and Democrats in Congress.

In The Journals survey, almost two-thirds of registered voters who were polled said they believed the countrys economy was not good or poor a larger share than in the March poll.

The findings of The Journals poll suggest that Mr. Biden and Democrats might make some gains with voters by focusing on that issue. The poll found that 60 percent of people said abortion should be legal in most or all cases, up five percentage points from March.

Education Secretary Betsy Devos Becomes Latest Trump Administration Official To Resign

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on Thursday night became the latest Trump administration official to resign in the wake of the assault on the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday. She said in her resignation letter to President Trump that there is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation, and it is the inflection point for me.

DeVos insisted in her letter that history will show we were correct in our repeated urging of and support for schools reopening this year and getting all of Americas students back to learning. But, she said, impressionable children were watching the riots at the Capitol and we each have a moral obligation to exercise good judgement and model the behavior we hope they would emulate.

Her resignation came hours after Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, announced her resignation, saying it is effective as of Monday. Chao and DeVos are both members of Mr. Trumps Cabinet, and President-elect Joe Biden has already announced his choices to replace them.

Trump Wrongly Claims Democrats Requested A Steel Barrier On The Southern Border

From CNN’s Jeremy Diamond

President Trump claimed tonight that, “At the request of Democrats, it will be a steel barrier rather than a concrete wall.”

Despite Trump’s claim, Democrats did not request a steel barrier on the US-Mexico border.

Democrats have long been strenuously opposed to Trump’s campaign promise that he would build a concrete wall on the US-Mexico border. But they did not propose a steel barrier as an alternative.

Rather, Democrats have continued to oppose the construction of any new steel or concrete barrier on the Southern border. They have only kept the door open to funding a border barrier as part of a broader immigration deal.

Trump Tells Cpac We May Have To Do It Again When Talking About Possible 2024 Presidential Run

President Trump addresses the nation on US response to coronavirus 3/11/2020

Dallas Former President Donald Trump made his return to the CPAC stage on Saturday, pushing his baseless election claims, bashing his enemies, and hinting at a possible 2024 run by saying, “We may have to do it again.”

“If I stayed home, the persecution of Donald Trump would stop immediately, but I can’t do that because I love my country and I love the people,” he said.

Later in the nearly two-hour speech, he said, “America’s comeback begins this November, and it will continue onward with the unstoppable momentum that we are going to develop in November 2024.”

Trump did not announce another run for the White House in 2024, but he still comfortably won the CPAC straw poll, as he has in past years. In a straw poll with Trump removed from the list, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was the clear favorite with 65%, and Sen. Ted Cruz coming in a distant second with 6%. All others had less than 5%.

Trump pointed to the straw poll results frequently on stage, especially his approval rating among the conference’s conservative attendees.

Trump vowed to go to West Virginia, a state he won by nearly 20 points, and campaign against Manchin when he is up for reelection in 2024, as well as to campaign against Sinema when she also goes up for reelection that same year in Arizona.

“So my hands fell around another powerful guy, strong as hell … I know these people well, it’s just not my deal,” Trump said.

As Biden Warns Of Threats To Democracy Jan 6 Investigations Intensify

President Bidens address comes as investigations of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol have intensified, deepening the publics understanding of a moment when American democracy faced a very tangible threat.

Two of former President Donald J. Trumps top White House lawyers are set to testify on Friday before a federal grand jury investigating the riot, according to a person familiar with the matter. The scheduled appearances of Pat A. Cipollone, the former White House counsel, and Patrick F. Philbin, who was his deputy, which were reported earlier by ABC News, could give investigators more insights into the former presidents actions after his election defeat.

Mr. Cipollone and Mr. Philbin were witness to key moments in Mr. Trumps push to overturn the 2020 election results, including discussions about sending false letters to state officials, meddling in the Justice Department and seizing voting machines. Mr. Cipollone was also in direct contact with the president as rioters stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

At least five top former White House officials have received subpoenas from a Washington-based grand jury investigating the events that led to the violence, including Eric Herschmann, a lawyer who worked in the White House Greg Jacob, the top lawyer for former Vice President Mike Pence and Marc Short, Mr. Pences chief of staff.

I believed more needed to be done, Mr. Cipollone testified.

Biden: I Will Give My All To You

In a coda to his inauguration speech, President Joe Biden made one more plea for the nation to come together during an appearance Wednesday night at the Lincoln Memorial.

This is a great nation. Were good people, Biden said during the Celebrating America program that was the final event of a day of inaugural activities. To overcome the challenges in front of us requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy: Unity.

Biden said the question is whether the nation can meet the moment like our forebears had.

I believe we must, and I believe we will, Biden said, before delivering a final promise: I will give my all to you.

Chuck Todd: It Doesnt Appear The President Views Himself As A Healer

Donald Trump won

Trump has had a pattern during past crises of being slow to divert from his agenda and planned talking points. The weekend before he declared the coronavirus pandemic a national emergency, he was golfing and holding fundraisers at his Mar-a-Lago resort downplaying the severity of the virus. During the controversy around his comments on the deadly protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017, Trump spent the weekend at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf course, holding a meeting on tax cuts at the White House and traveling to Trump Tower in New York for a meeting on infrastructure as the controversy ballooned.

But while Trump has been heavily criticized over his response to the protests, the demonstrations provide him the type of culture war distraction he had been seeking to take the focus away from his administrations response to the coronavirus, which has killed more than 100,000 people and resulted in 1 in 4 Americans filing for unemployment, said one outside adviser.

Before the demonstrations escalated, Trump had little success trying to shift the national conversation away from the coronavirus pandemic to other divisive issues popular with conservatives, such as voter fraud, alleged social media bias and China. Now, says that adviser, he can appear as the strong-arm law-and-order candidate protecting the country from lawlessness.

Iowa National Democrats Criticize State Republicans For Supporting Trump After Jan 6 Riot

Iowa Democratic Party Chair Ross Wilburn criticized Iowa Republicans for supporting Trump after his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in January.

Iowa Republicans have tied themselves to a man who attacked the foundations of our democracy throughout his time in office, Wilburn said in a statement. Just nine months ago, he incited a violent mob to attack his own Vice President and threaten the lives of lawmakers who were simply fulfilling their constitutional duty to certify our election.

A slew of Iowas top Republican leaders warmed up the crowd ahead of Trump, including Reynolds, Grassley and U.S. Reps. Ashley Hinson and Mariannette Miller-Meeks.

Reynolds led the crowd in a chant of U.S.A. and criticized Biden on his immigration policies, mentioning that she visited the U.S.-Mexico border this week.

I was just there this week, she said. You know whos never been there? Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. They dont care. They dont care whats happening at the border.

Vice President Kamala Harris visited the U.S.-Mexico border in June.

Reynolds also mentioned Bidens COVID-19 response, eliciting boos from the crowd.

They dont respect you, she said of Democrats. They dont respect your faith, your values. They dont think youre capable of making your own decisions and they dont think you should. And this is what America looks like under democratic leadership but Im here to tell you were fighting back.
