Polling Average Put Biden’s Approval Rating Higher Than 39%
Experts say approval ratings should be calculated by looking at an average between polls not a single poll. On the day the claim was made, the polling average for Biden’s approval rating was 45.2%.
“The best practice to look at multiple polls and not to fixate on an individual poll, which can be cherry-picked to make inaccurate arguments,” Barry Burden, director of the Elections Research Center and professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said in an email.
The website FiveThirtyEight rates how different polls vary in terms of accuracy and statistical bias. It calculates approval ratings for presidents based on a weighted average that takes into account poll quality and uncertainty.
According to that polling average, Biden’s approval rate was 45.2% on the day the claim was posted.
The Facebook post appeared to refer to an Economist/YouGov poll conducted Sept. 4-7. It reported 39% of American adults approved of Biden. YouGov noted this was the first time the majority of Americans disapproved of Biden during his presidency.
However, Burden told USA TODAY this poll was “unusually low.”

“In the last month YouGov has also reported approval ratings of 44% and 50%,” he said. “Taken as a group it is more accurate to say that Biden’s rating is hovering in the mid-40s.”
United States Presidential Approval Rating
In the United States, presidential job approval ratings were first conducted by George Gallup to gauge public support for the president of the United States during their term. An approval rating is a percentage determined by polling which indicates the percentage of respondents to an opinion poll who approve of a particular person or program. Typically, an approval rating is given to a politician based on responses to a poll in which a sample of people are asked whether they approve or disapprove of that particular political figure. A question might ask: Do you approve or disapprove of the way that the current president is handling their job as president?
Like most surveys that measure opinions, individual poll results may be inaccurate. Many unscientific approval rating systems exist that show inaccurate statistics. Examples that self select, such as online questions are of this type however, the aggregate approval rating is generally accepted by statisticians as a statistically valid indicator of the comparative changes in the popular United States mood regarding a president.

Joe Biden’s Approval Rating Ticks Up In First 2023 Poll
President Joe Biden‘s approval rating has ticked up slightly over the new year and the first polling from 2023 shows the share of Americans who strongly approve of him has increased.
A tracking poll prepared by Rasmussen Reports shows that Biden enjoyed a 47 percent approval rating on Tuesdaythe first day of the 118th Congresswhile 52 percent disapproved of him.
Twenty-seven percent of respondents said they strongly approved of the president, while 42 percent said they strongly disapproved of the job he’s doing.
Though that means Biden’s approval is still in negative territory, it is an improvement since Rasmussen Reports’ tracking poll on December 30, when just 26 percent strongly approved.
However, the December 30 numbers also showed that 51 percent of Americans disapproved of Bidena mixed picture for the president following midterm elections where the Democrats performed better than expected.
The tracking poll was conducted among 1,500 likely voters.
On December 29, Biden’s approval rating was 46 percent in the same measure, while disapproval was 52 percent and 27 percent strongly approved of the president.
Rasmussen Reports’ figures for January 3 are the first polling numbers of the new year to be included in poll tracker FiveThirtyEight’s analysis of Biden’s approval rating, which takes into account a wide variety of polls and FiveThirtyEight’s system of pollster rating.

Of the seven facing August primaries, four are facing Trump-backed primary challengers. Those lawmakers include Wyomings Liz Cheney, Michigans Peter Meijer, and Washingtons Jaime Herrera Buetler and Dan Newhouse. All four also voted to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6 attack.

Donald Trumps Approval Rating Reaches Highest Point Since 2017 As Administration Battles Coronavirus New Poll Shows
President Donald Trumps approval rating reached its highest point in three years Tuesday as his administration continues to battle the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new poll.
The CNN poll conducted by SSRS, an independent research company, found that 45 percent of respondents approve of the way Trump is handling his job, while 51 percent disapprove and 4 percent had no opinion. The poll surveyed 1,112 people and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percent.
Trumps approval rating has hit 45 percent only one other time during his presidency, and that was less than two months after he took office in 2017. That poll showed the president had a 45 percent approval rating, with 52 percent disapproving, on March 5, 2017.
The new CNN poll showed that 42 percent of people believe the federal government is doing a good job at preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus in the United States. That rating is down from a CNN poll result in early March, in which 49 percent said the federal government was doing a good job in combating the pandemic while 43 percent said it was doing a poor job.
The U.S. now has over 1.35 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus, with 81,650 deaths reported, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. So far, 232,733 people have recovered from the viruss disease, COVID-19.

Absence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder
Americans tend to view presidents more favorably in retrospect than they do while in office, Gallup polling has shown.
In addition to leaving office, another factor has kept Trump from a continuous spotlight: Social media giants Twitter, Facebook and YouTube have all banned the former president from posting on their platforms, a decision they enacted shortly after his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in January. The companies have argued the move is necessary to prevent the spread of dangerous misinformation, though its raised questions about free speech and censorship on social media.
Trump has remained an active guest on conservative platforms, and he briefly posted thoughts to a personal blog. But stripped of his Twitter account and the White House megaphone, hes largely receded from mainstream attention.
Selzer said none of that appears to be hurting Trumps favorability numbers in Iowa.
It doesnt seem to be a case of out of sight out of mind, she said. Maybe its a little bit more of absence makes the heart grow fonder.
In a December 2018 Iowa Poll of registered Republicans, only 19% of respondents said they thought posting potentially inflammatory messages on Twitter on a regular basis was a good move for Trump. Far more 72% said doing so was a mistake.
Karen Moon, a 32-year-old Indianola resident and poll respondent, said she was never a fan of Trumps public persona.
She would definitely vote for him if he ran again for president, Moon said.

Donald Trump Is Quite Unpopular
Our new CNN/SSRS poll finds that President Donald Trump has an approval rating of 39% and a disapproval rating of 55%. Compared to our last poll, his approval rating is down a statistically insignificant 1 point and his disapproval rating is up 1 point .
Still, a look at the longer term trend suggests a more worrisome trend for the President. The Presidents approval rating also declined in our previous poll compared to the poll conducted before it. Comparably, Trumps approval rating had been steady at 43% in three consecutive polls taken between April and June.
The 39% he earned in this poll is the worst approval rating hes recorded since early January of this year, when the federal government shutdown occurred. Meanwhile, his disapproval rating is now tied for its highest level since our poll taken in late January and early February.
You might say that a 4-point drop isnt a huge one. Recall, though, that Trumps approval rating has stayed between 35% and 45% in every CNN poll taken during his presidency. In other words, the president was firmly in the top half of his approval range in the middle part of this year. Now hes in the lower half of his approval range.

Biden Hits Highest Approval Rating In More Than A Year
President Biden has hit his highest approval rating in more than a year according to FiveThirtyEights aggregation of polls out on Thursday.
The president kicked off 2022 at 43.3 percent and did not break above 43 percent for the rest of the year, according to the numbers from FiveThirtyEight. The calculation from the polling website also found that 51.1 percent of Americans disapprove of the presidents performance.
Bidens lowest point was in July when he hit 37 percent of Americans approving of his performance as president.
FiveThirtyEight factors in multiple polls to calculate the presidents average approval rating, including a Rasmussen Reports/Pulse Opinion Research poll this week that found 47 percent of Americans approve of Bidens performance. Another poll from Morning Consult showed Bidens approval rating at 41 percent this week.
Bidens favorability has been improving since the midterm elections when Democrats had better-than-expected results and held onto the Senate. Republicans flipped the House, but by a much narrower margin than anticipated.
The presidents overall approval rating has also not dipped below 40 percent since early August.
In early August, Biden announced the death of Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, one of the top planners behind Sept. 11, and he signed the Democrats sweeping climate and tax bill, the Inflation Reduction Act.

Months In Office How Bidens Approval Rating Stacks Up Against Trumps
President Joe Biden has reached the six-month mark of his time in the Oval Office on Tuesday. While his approval lags behind that of former President Barack Obamas, Biden is more appealing to voters than former President Donald Trump
The economy and immigration were at the forefront of voters minds six months into Trumps first term, and the same is true for Biden. Two signature issues of his campaign and presidency, Trump has berated the Biden administration since leaving office for dismantling his policies. However, polling shows Republicans generally approved of Biden more than Democrats who sided Trump.
Six months into his first term, Biden has an overall approval rating of 53 percent, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling. That includes about 88 percent of Democrats and 17 percent of Republicans.
At the same point in Trumps presidency, Reuters/Ipsos polling found he had an overall approval rating of 38 percent, with only 10 percent of Democrats and 77 percent of Republicans on his side.
Biden also had a leg up on Trump when it comes to independent voters. While 52 percent of them approved of Bidens job performance, only 26 percent backed Trump at the same point in his presidency.
On Monday, Biden addressed the situation, touting the amount of new jobs and level of economic growth since he took office and saying weve brought this economy back from the brink.
