What Has Trump Done Good

Don't Miss

Government Size And Regulations

BET founder: Trump has done ‘positive things’ for the economy

The administration imposed far fewer financial penalties against banks and major companies accused of wrong-doing relative to the Obama administration.

In the first six weeks of his tenure, Trump suspended or in a few cases, revoked more than 90 regulations. In early 2017, Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to slash two existing regulations for every new one . A September 2017 Bloomberg BNA review found that due to unclear wording in the order and the large proportion of regulations it exempts, the order had had little effect since it was signed. The Trump OMB released an analysis in February 2018 indicating the economic benefits of regulations significantly outweigh the economic costs. The administration ordered one-third of government advisory committees for federal agencies eliminated, except for committees that evaluate consumer product safety or committees that approve research grants.

Trump ordered a four-month government-wide hiring freeze of the civilian work force at the start of his term. He said he did not intend to fill many of the governmental positions that were still vacant, as he considered them unnecessary there were nearly 2,000 vacant government positions.

The administration ended the requirement that nonprofits, including political advocacy groups who collect so-called dark money, disclose the names of large donors to the IRS the Senate voted to overturn the administration’s rule change.

Tried To Take Credit For The Covid Vaccine

Just days after he lost the election, news of a successful coronavirus vaccine was announced. The Trump administration was quick to claim a victory over the pandemic and falsely attributed Operation Warp Speed with being instrumental in the vaccination. In a similar move, on 11th November Trump did a tone-deaf tweet about how well the stock market was doing and that the ‘vaccine coming soon.’ In comparison to the more reserved statement from the incoming Biden administration, Trump’s tweet looked insincere at best.

Things Trump Got Right

Nobody does nothing as president, not even someone who watches television for five or six hours a day.

About the author: David Frum is a staff writer at The Atlantic.

In his single term as president, George H. W. Bush negotiated the peaceful reunification of Germany. He liberated Kuwait while losing few American lives. He signed legislation to end acid rain. He did a budget deal that reduced federal deficits, enacted the Americans With Disabilities Act, and successfully resolved the collapse of the savings-and-loan industry.

Jimmy Carter, in his one term, deregulated passenger aviation. He updated the regulation of rail freight, shipping, and trucking, laying the foundation for Americas modern delivery system. He negotiated the Camp David Accords, ending belligerency between Egypt and Israel. He avoided a major crisis in Central America with his Panama Canal Treaty.

William Howard Taft also achieved much in his one term as president. It was his Department of Justice that busted the Standard Oil monopoly. Taft forcefully advocated a central bank for the United States, although that project was not completed until the year after he lost the presidency to Woodrow Wilson. Taft urged free trade with Canada and negotiated the treaty that ended a century of rancorous North American waterway disputes.

Trump Opened A Complaint Platform To Report Censorship On Facebook Twitter And Youtube

The Trump administration launched a website in May asking for examples of Americans being censored on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

At the time, the form asked users to submit their name, phone number and whether they are a U.S. citizen, USA TODAY reported. Then it asked for incidents of censorship.

“SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS should advance FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Yet too many Americans have seen their accounts suspended, banned, or fraudulently reported for unclear ‘violations’ of user policies,” the White House website reads.

The website says it is no longer accepting new responses.

End Outsourcing And Bring Back Jobs From Overseas

1926 best images about MR. DONALD J. TRUMP PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED ...

America lost 31.4% of its manufacturing jobs between 2000 and 2011 these were steady jobs that, on average, paid $28.85 per hour.

U.S. companies outsourced many of these jobs to save money. But robotics, artificial intelligence, and bio-engineering also made some jobs obsolete, so ending outsourcing may not bring back all the jobs that were lost. Its possible that government-sponsored training for these specialties might create more jobs for U.S. workers than a trade war.

Record Number Of Regulations Eliminated That Hurt Small Businesses

This appears to be true.Mr. Trump has made reducing regulations a signature part of his legacy. He signed an executive order directing all agencies to repeal at least two existing regulations for each new regulation issued in the 2017 fiscal year and thereafter. A list of regulations that have been removed is being compiled by the Brookings Deregulation Tracker.

What Trump Got Right

An earlier version of this story stated that Donald Trump was the first president to be impeached after he had left office. He was impeached for a second time on Jan. 13, before he left office.

Donald Trump will not be remembered by most Americans as a great president.

An informal survey of historians this summer ranked him as the fourth-worst chief executive, ahead of only Franklin Pierce, Andrew Johnson and James Buchanan. He lost the popular vote in both the election he won and the election he lost. He was the first president to be impeached twice, as well as the first to have an impeachment trial after he left office. And by the time his supporters had finished storming the Capitol in a furious attempt to prevent Congress from certifying Joe Bidens victory in January, only 38 percent of Americans approved of the job Trump did with 52 percent strongly disapproving.

But four years is a long time, and presidents have an enormous amount of power. So even an unpopular chief executive who insists he actually won a losing reelection bid cant make the wrong call on everything. Now that Trump has been out of office for six months, Outlook asked experts and writers who mostly disagreed with him often vehemently to look back on what he got right.

A Dearth Of Shared Facts And Information

Has Donald Trump made America great again? Looking back at his presidency

One of the few things that Republicans and Democrats could agree on during Trumps tenure is that they didnt share the same set of facts. In a 2019 survey, around three-quarters of Americans said most Republican and Democratic voters disagreed not just over political plans and policies, but over basic facts.

Much of the disconnect between the parties involved the news media, which Trump routinely disparaged as fake news and the enemy of the people. Republicans, in particular, expressed widespread and growing distrust of the press. In a 2019 survey, Republicans voiced more distrust than trust in 2o of the 30 specific news outlets they were asked about, even as Democrats expressed more trust than distrust in 22 of those same outlets. Republicans overwhelmingly turned to and trusted one outlet included in the study Fox News even as Democrats used and expressed trust in a wider range of sources. The study concluded that the two sides placed their trust in two nearly inverse media environments.

Some of the media organizations Trump criticized most vocally saw the biggest increases in GOP distrust over time. The share of Republicans who said they distrusted CNN rose from 33% in a 2014 survey to 58% by 2019. The proportion of Republicans who said they distrusted The Washington Post and The New York Times rose 17 and 12 percentage points, respectively, during that span.3

Historical Evaluations And Public Opinion

In the sixth Siena College Research Institute’s presidential rankings, conducted after Trump had been in office for one year, Trump was ranked as the third-worst president.C-SPAN‘s 2021 President Historians Survey ranked Trump as the fourth-worst president overall and the worst in the leadership characteristics of Moral Authority and Administrative Skills. Trump’s best rated leadership characteristic was Public Persuasion, where he ranked 32nd out of the 44 individuals who were previously president.

At the time of the 2016 election, polls by Gallup found Trump had a favorable rating around 35% and an unfavorable rating around 60%, while Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton held a favorable rating of 40% and an unfavorable rating of 57%. 2016 was the first election cycle in modern presidential polling in which both major-party candidates were viewed so unfavorably. By January 20, 2017, Inauguration Day, Trump’s approval rating average was 42%, the lowest rating average for an incoming president in the history of modern polling during his term it was an “incredibly stable ” 36% to 40%. Trump was the only president to never reach a 50% approval rating in the Gallup poll dating to 1938.

Black Employment Gains Before The Pandemic Were Real But Not The Result Of Trumps Presidential Term

Trump has repeatedly patted himself on the back for achieving the lowest Black and Hispanic unemployment rate in the history of our country.

Before the pandemic hit, the unemployment rate for Black Americans reached an all-time low at 5.9 percent in May 2018. But as many have pointed out, the decline in the Black unemployment rate began during President Obamas presidency.

Even as the overall unemployment rate dropped after a sharp rise in March, the Black unemployment rate remained higher. White Americans have found work more quickly overall, and the employment gap has persisted, even as further economic relief from the government remains nowhere in sight. The continued failure to contain the coronavirus epidemic makes a full recovery even more difficult.

Trump also chooses not to mention the kinds of jobs that Black Americans occupy. A Brookings Institution report found that Black Americans are overrepresented in low-wage, undervalued essential jobs in which theyre more likely to die due to factors like the coronavirus.

According to an Associated Press fact-check, household median income was higher for Black people before Trump took office. Furthermore, Trumps focus on the unemployment rate ignores other economic hardships that Black people face, like low rates of Black homeownership and low Black male labor force participation rates, according to the New York Times.

When He Doubled Fees At His Resort Hotel After Becoming President

Whats the first thing you do when you become the leader of the free world? Jack up the membership fees at your beach resort.

After Trumps election, Mar-a-Lago, the shining jewel in his gilt-coated crown, doubled its initiation fee to $200,000.

At the time, Norm Eisen, Barack Obamas top ethics lawyer, called it not very subtle exploitation of the fact that the clubs figurehead is now president of the U.S.

This type of naked profiteering off of a government office is what I would expect from King Louis XVI or his modern kleptocratic equivalents, not an American president, Eisen said.

Preach.

Incited A Violent Attack On The Capitol Building That Left Five People Dead

In perhaps the darkest day, in not just Trump’s presidency but in the history of the United States, thousands of armed Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building in a violent attempt at a coup to stop Biden from being certified as the next president by the Senate.

The mob smashed through windows and doors and managed to make their way into the chamber as well as elected officials’ offices, all while Senators and others were locked away for their own personal safety.

The riot led to the deaths of five people including one police officer and came just hours after Trump had held a ‘Save America March’ outside of the White House where he had encouraged the crowd to march down Pennsylvania Avenue and make their presence known. Trump failed to immediately act to stop the riot and eventually tried to distance himself from any blame. The aftermath saw members of Congress call for Trump to be immediately impeached, whereas on social media, Trump’s Twitter account was permanently suspended and he was locked out of many other platforms to prevent any further incitements of violence. For all of the scandals that has dogged Trump’s presidency the image of his rabid supporters draping Trump flags over the steps of the Capitol, intimidating the press and overall posing a threat to democracy will be the enduring legacy of his presidency. The hearings opening up information of that day are only just starting

Well, that was exhausting.

The Trump Administration Has Been Fighting To Decriminalize Homosexuality Abroad

The Trump Administration has called on politicians, U.N. democratic governments, diplomats, and people everywhere stating that they should speak up loudly on the decriminalization of homosexuality.

In 2017, U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley called on Chechnya to stop an anti-LGBTQ campaign, where people were being kidnapped and harmed based on their sexual orientation.

The Trump administration put pressure on Russian federal authorities to speak out on the campaign and to take steps to ensure the release of anyone wrongfully detained .

Secretary Of State Mike Pompeo has been actively supporting the work by U.S. Embassies to fight violence and discrimination against LGBTQ people .

In September 2019, President Trump gave a speech before the United Nations in more than 70 countries where it remains illegal.

The Trump administration said that the United States would not stand for it, and launched a global campaign to end the criminalization of homosexuality, as dozens of nations still execute or imprison people for their sexuality. Led by then-Ambassador Grenell, the Trump Administration worked with other LGBTQ activists around Europe to discuss a specific push to decriminalize homosexuality worldwide and encourages other countries to implement safe laws for the LGBTQ community.

He Signed A Bill This Year Allowing Some Drug Imports From Canada So That Prescription Prices Would Go Down

Donald Trump pulls off oil deal which will be good for global economy

President Trump has signed a series of executive orders aimed at making it easier for states to import cheaper drugs from Canada. But it is far from clear whether these executive orders will succeed in that aim. This proposal bears no resemblance to Mr. Trumps 2016 promise to use the buying power of the federal government to negotiate lower prices for drugs for Medicare patients, which would save hundreds of billions of dollars over a decade. Mr. Trump has not kept that promise. If he were serious about doing so, he would push Republicans in the Senate to pass the Elijah E. Cummings Lower Drug Costs Now Act, which Democrats passed last year. Theres no evidence that he has done so.
