Michael Bloomberg is a leading contender for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination despite being first elected mayor of New York City as a Republican, and later switching his party affiliation to independent.
Indeed, he announced his re-registration as a Democrat in October 2019 just weeks before unveiling his presidential bid.
That history and the billionaire businessmans penchant for donating to Republicans has led to consternation among some Democrats who wonder whether Bloomberg is really one of them.
So is he?
Hes never been as good a Democrat as Ronald Reagan was a Republican, Jim Frasier, former member of the executive committee of the Democratic National Committee, told PolitiFact. Hes every bit as good a Democrat as Bernie Sanders is.
In 1980, Reagan was elected president as a Republican, after having spent much of his early political life as a Democrat. In 2016, Sanders was runner-up for the Democratic presidential nomination, though he hasnt always identified as a member of the party.
Bloombergs campaign didnt offer comment for this article. But in a June 2018 column, Bloomberg explained why he was supporting Democrats in their attempts to win control of the U.S. House of Representatives that year.
“Ive never much liked political parties,” Bloomberg wrote. “Ive always believed that we should put country before party. Too many politicians practice the reverse, with terrible consequences for the American people.”
Super Tuesday Results And Suspension Of Campaign
In the March 3, 2020 “Super Tuesday” primaries, Bloomberg finished in third or fourth place in most of the 14 states involved, picking up a total of 61 delegates out of the more than 1,000 that were available. On March 4, 2020, Bloomberg suspended his campaign, stating, “Im a believer in using data to inform decisions. After yesterdays results, the delegate math has become virtually impossible and a viable path to the nomination no longer exists.” Bloomberg then endorsed Joe Biden.
Following the suspension of his campaign, Bloomberg donated money to nonprofits which register people of color to vote. This includes a $2 million donation to Collective Future, a group that registers black voters, and a $500,000 donation to Voto Latino, which registers young Latinos as voters.

Poll: Coronavirus Concerns Are Especially Affecting Younger Americans
WASHINGTON A new poll released Thursday finds that younger Americans are experiencing the coronavirus pandemic more acutely than the country overall when it comes to health and the economy. Young people are also significantly more critical of President Trump and his handling of the crisis.
The survey from the Democratic-leaning Super PAC, NextGen America, and left-of-center polling firm, Navigator Research, reveals that Americans ages 18-34 are more likely than the general public to know someone who has lost their job, who has had work hours reduced, or who has been infected with the virus all by about 10 percentage points.
Nearly one-quarter of younger Americans 24 percent know somebody who has been diagnosed with coronavirus, versus 16 percent of the overall public. Strong majorities of young people know somebody who has either lost their job or had hours cut amid the public health crisis .
Thats compared with 53 percent and 65 percent of all Americans, respectively, who say the same thing.
Almost one-in-four younger Americans also report that they personally have lost their jobs while 14 percent of all Americans say the same.
Whats more, this younger demographic is experiencing the most anxiety about grappling with coronavirus than any other age group and is more likely to worry about finances. According to the poll, young Americans are tapping into their savings and applying for unemployment insurance at higher rates than others.

When I wanted to run for mayor, the Democrats wouldnt let me on their ballot but the Republicans said, We dont have a candidate. Would you like to run? And I said, Sure. Why not? He tried to tout how his gun control, climate change reforms, and tax policies are right in line with Democratsbut he still hasnt really answered the question.
When that didnt work, he touted his wealth: I have helped the Democratic Party a lot in terms of funding. I funded the races in Virginia where there was a background check issue for guns, which is one of my real issues, and it went from red to blue. I funded 24 House contests the last time, in 2018. Twenty-one of them won and that flipped the House from red to blue and put Pelosi in charge.

WASHINGTON One year ago, Greg Schultz was racing to assemble the pieces of a Joe Biden presidential campaign as the former vice president neared his long-speculated, but never 100 percent certain entry into the crowded Democratic primary.
Now, the longtime Biden political adviser is taking on a different challenge as the campaigns general election strategist, ramping up efforts to align and execute planning among Team Biden, the Democratic National Committee, state parties and other key stakeholders.
The assignment, which became official this week, rounds out the reorganization of the senior ranks of Bidens campaign operation after Jennifer OMalley Dillon replaced Schultz as campaign manager last month. Schultz, who has continued to serve as a senior adviser to the former vice president, will also act as a campaign surrogate with a focus on key Midwestern battleground states.
Schultz first joined Bidens orbit formally in 2013 with a post in the vice president’s office, after having worked with the vice president as the Obama reelection campaigns Ohio state director in 2012.

Former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg plans to spend $60 million to strengthen the Democratic House majority in November, roughly matching the money he invested in flipping control of the House in 2018, according to a Bloomberg adviser familiar with the plans.
The spending will include digital and television ads to defend some of the 20 freshman Democrats he helped win in 2018, along withspending aimed at defeating additional Republican incumbents.
The effort will include new money to several groups, including a revival of Bloombergs own political vehicle, Independence USA, and donations to the House Majority PAC, a group closely associated with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi , said the Bloomberg adviser, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the internal planning.
Mikes view is that the investments he made last time are some of the best investments he has ever made, the adviser said Monday about the House races.
