Changes Coming To Lakewood Boulevard Intersection

Minor changes will be made to the Lakewood Boulevard and 23rd Street intersection, where Gabriel Alexander Garate, 7, was hit by a vehicle and died of his injuries.

In the July 26 accident, officers were dispatched to the intersection at about 5:22 p.m. regarding an injury traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian. Long Beach Fire personnel arrived and pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2005 Dodge Ram pick-up truck was traveling westbound 23rd Street and making a left turn to southbound Lakewood Boulevard, according to an LBPD press release.

A father and juvenile were crossing Lakewood Boulevard eastbound on 23rd Street when the Dodge pick-up truck failed to yield to them in the marked south crosswalk. The father and juvenile were in the crosswalk with the right-of-way pedestrian signal when the incident occurred.

The release further states, The driver of the Dodge pick-up was identified by his valid California Drivers License as James Barnes, a 57-year-old male resident of Desert Hot Springs. Barnes remained at the scene, cooperated with the investigation, and was later arrested for felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. Alcohol, drugs, and distracted driving were not believed to be a factor in this collision.

Local television and newspapers reported on Gabriels death and mourners set up a memorial at the site.

In Loving Memory Of Krista And Baby Christopher

    $26,664USD raised of $50,000 goal

On Saturday, August 7, 2021, our long-time surf bro and brother-in-Christ, Adolfo Andrade, along with his loving wife, Keri, lost their daughter Krista and unborn grandchild Christopher in a tragic car accident. Krista is survived by her 5-year-old son, Theo, who was in the care of Adolfo and Keri at the time of the accident.

Our heart is to help our bro Adolfo and his family by providing funds to lighten the load during this unexpected difficult season. $$ for takeout meals, expenses, childcare whatever they might need! The donation goal is $50,000.

Whatever amount you feel led to contribute is greatly appreciated. Or if prayers are the contribution you can offer at this time, those are highly valued too!

Brass Statues At Forest Lawn Cypress

Forest Lawn in Cypress has quite a few impressive large scale statues and monuments that really stand out and command your attention. As I visit more and more I am discovering that some of the smaller pieces are just as impressive.

I had the chance to spend some time in the Mausoleum and Patriot Chapel area of the park the other day and was quite taken by a couple of smaller brass statues. The first is untitled* and features a young angel grasping the Earth like a Harlem Globe Trotter. It is beautifully executed.

*UPDATE 01.10.2021I recently got an email from Gerald Jones, Ph.D. alerting me to the title, artist, and location of the original. Here is what he sent me..

I stumbled on your Web page today, and noticed that a photo you have there is marked untitled. I can tell you what it is, and where the original is. Actually, it has three titles: Genius of Geography, Genius of Discovery, and Genius of Columbus. It was sculpted in 1892 by Gaetano Russo for the fountain in Columbus Circle in New York City, where it stands today. Cheers,

Here is a link to really great image of it as it stands in NY.

This next statue is situated to the left upon entry of the Heritage mausoleum. It is titled Pro-Patria, and in my opinion, should be the large statue outside the chapel.

Here is a photo of the Patriots Chapel and Heritage Mausoleum as well as the statue of what looks like John Addams.

Forest Lawn Incorporates $100000 Donation To Cypress College Vrc At Patriots Chapel Dedication

Cypress Colleges Veterans Resource Center received a second $100,000 contribution this month this time as the centerpiece of a ceremony dedicating the new Patriots Chapel at Forest Lawns memorial park in Cypress.

A ceremonial check was presented to Cypress College President JoAnna Schilling, Ph.D. and representatives of the VRC by Forest Lawn President and CEO Darin Drabing during the Patriots Chapel dedication on October 11.

We are deeply grateful for the generosity of Forest Lawn, CEO Darin Drabing, and Vice President Angie Ray for your support of our Veterans Resource Center. Dr. Schilling said during the event. Cypress College is committed to ensuring our Veterans Center will be a state of the art facility for our returning veterans, and our services will provide the support they so richly deserve.

Community outreach and involvement are an essential part of Forest Lawn, said Drabing, who serves on the Cypress College Foundation Board of Directors in addition to his leadership role at Forest Lawn. Our on-site events, such as our annual Easter Sunrise Service, Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and Dia de los Muertos programs, bring the community together for celebrations of life. The dedication of the Patriots Chapel at the Heritage Mausoleum as a new public space signifies the ways Forest Lawn helps communities thrive.
