Los Angeles Republican Voter Guide

Don't Miss

Attorney General: Rob Bonta

California Prop. 23: Kidney dialysis clinic rules| Election 2020

Governor Newsom appointed Rob Bonta, a former assemblymember from the East Bay, to be attorney general in 2021. Bonta has impressed so far. He sued Amazon for stifling competition and driving up prices, sued Walmart for environmental violations, sued the US Postal Service for its short-sighted plan to buy over 100,000 new gas-powered mail trucks, and joinedseveral environmental justice lawsuits seeking to protect vulnerable low-income communities.

Bonta faces frequent Fox News guest Nathan Hochman. Hochmans vision for solving homlelessness and crime is exactly what you would expect from a Republican: more law enforcement. Enough elected Democrats in California have tried this approach that we dont want to see what it looks like in the hands of a Republican.

Proposition 27 Corporate Online Sports Betting

Knock LA Recommendation: NO

Proposition 27 would allow online and mobile sports betting and is backed by major online sports books corporations, like DraftKings, BetMGM, and FanDuel, collectively contributing over $169 million to support the measure. If this online gambling measure passes, you will be able to wager on sports from any device anywhere in California. Though the measure would create a new state unit to regulate online sports wagering, the nature of online platforms make it much more difficult to prevent minors from gambling illegally and provide support for gaming addiction problems.

Prop 27 technically requires gaming companies to partner with a tribe in order to participate in online gambling. It also allows tribes to create their own platforms, with certain branding limits. And while it reduces the license fee from $100 million to $10 million for tribes, that remains a prohibitive cost for many tribes to create their own platforms. As such, groups like the California Nations Indian Gaming Association fear that under Prop 27 online gambling corporations would take near total control of the sports wagering market in California, disrupting tribal revenues.

Los Angeles Mayors Race

Republican Voter Guide Orange County

She has the big endorsements. He has the big war chest. Both Bass and Caruso are leaning into their strengths in the final days of the Los Angeles mayors race.

If the limited polling available holds true, its Caruso, the billionaire developer and Republican-turned-Democrat, who carries the momentum.

After losing the primary to Bass by seven points in June, a Southern California News Group poll released Oct. 18 has Caruso leading by 3 percent, essentially a dead heat.

A UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times came out Friday, however, with a poll showing, Bass maintaining her slight edge of support among 45 percent of likely voters compared to Caruso, who garnered support from 41 percent of likely voters. About 13 percent of respondents said they remained undecided.

Its a dramatic turnaround from earlier in the summer when polls had Bass with a double-digit lead.

Caruso, who has campaigned on his business acumen and status as a political outsider, has effectively used his financial advantage to target the voter-rich San Fernando Valley and on ads targeting Hispanic and Asian voters.

Voters know the best way to address homelessness and safety is to have a leader who doesnt accept the deterioration of our quality of life, Caruso told the LA Daily News in a statement after the latest poll game out.

Bass cant compete with Caruso when it comes to advertisements and paid get-out-the-vote efforts.

Prop : Reproductive Freedom

A recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court held that the U.S. Constitution does not protect the right to abortion. While access to abortion is no longer federally protected and is under attack across the country, we can safeguard access in California. Proposition 1 will amend the California Constitution to enshrine the fundamental right to choose an abortion, use or refuse contraceptives , and make individual decisions on reproductive health. These rights are consistent with existing state laws and our state constitutional rights to privacy and equal protection.

Judge Seat : Carolyn Jiyoung Park

Carolyn Jiyoung Park is a former union staff attorney who has litigated civil rights, labor, and tenant cases, and represented union members in arbitrations and collective bargaining, experience that is sadly lacking on the bench. Its safe to say that only a tiny fraction of the judges ruling on eviction cases have even once represented a tenant.

Park is also a committed local and environmental advocate as the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council liaison to the Neighborhood Council Sustainability Alliance. She would bring real diversity to a bench long dominated by former prosecutors. Shes on the Defenders of Justice slate and endorsed by Ground Game LA.

While the other candidate, Melissa Hammond, has experience as a public defender, she has worked in the district attorneys office since 2008. She is endorsed by LA County Supervisor Hahn and several police unions.

Proposition 30 Income Tax To Fund Electric Vehicles

Knock LA Recommendation: NO

Proposition 30 would impose an additional annual 1.75% tax on individual income over $2 million, with 80% of the resulting revenue going toward funding zero-emission vehicle programs , and 20% toward wildfire prevention and response programs. The state estimates that Prop 30 would generate $3.5$5 billion annually.

The proposition is largely intended to lower dangerous emissions by putting a higher percentage of ZEVs on the road, especially by subsidizing purchases for lower-income residents. However, Prop 30 would fund zero-emission subsidy programs that currently only offer up to $9,500 in subsidies. With average new electric vehicle prices at $66,000 and average used prices at $42,700, it seems unlikely that many lower-income residents could realistically buy these cars, even with the subsidy. And, of course, mining the cobalt currently required to produce commercial electric car batteries has devastating human costs, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Additionally, Lyft has funded 95% of the Yes on 30 campaign, to the tune of $43 million dollars. Currently, Lyft reimburses drivers for charging ZEVs out of its own pocket. Since the state will require Lyft to transition 90% of its fleet to ZEVs by 2030, the cost of that reimbursement will only go up. If this proposition passes, Lyft will pass that cost on to state-funded charging stations, allowing it to pay drivers less and make more money.

City Attorney: Faisal Gill

Election Day 2022: 3 things to watch for

The powerful office of Los Angeles city attorney is often overlooked, in part because its a confusing mix of roles and responsibilities. These include prosecuting misdemeanors, providing corporate counsel to the city and the LAPD, interpreting the City Charter, drafting legislation at request of the City Council, and representing the public against bad actors like corporate polluters or abusive employers.

But those wide-ranging responsibilities, if handled properly, mean that the city attorneys office could become a progressive powerhouse with the right leadership and thats what Faisal Gill is planning for.

An experienced litigator, Gill has vowed to dramatically cut back on misdemeanor prosecution and to redirect resources to the affirmative litigation division, where they can focus on rooting out wage theft and suing corporate polluters. He also has vowed to hold LAPD accountable, both through prosecution and by how he structures settlements for misconduct on behalf of the city. He is endorsed by Ground Game LA.

As the campaign has progressed, Gills policy platform has become more detailed and sophisticated, and he has stoutly resisted pressure to back down on any of his progressive commitments, showing impressive political courage.

Proposition 26 & Proposition 27

Propositions 26 and 27 both relate to the state of legalized gambling in California. Since the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988 passed, Indigenous tribes are allowed to run and operate casinos on tribal land. There are around 75 of these casinos in the state, owned by over 100 local tribes. Currently, these casinos are limited to slot machines and table games like poker or blackjack.

To boil them down to their core issues, Prop 26 would allow California casinos to offer sports betting, roulette, craps and other dice games, but only on their physical premises. Meanwhile, Prop 27 would legalize online sports betting run via these tribal casinos.

Both propositions promise that increased tax revenue gained would go toward social services. In reality, theuse of gambling and lotteries as a means of funding public goods in this country has been an extremely mixed bag. And with over $400 million spent on passing these two bills, its clear that companies like FanDuel arent pushing for these changes out of the goodness of their hearts. Speaking of FanDuel, theres an interesting brew of prominent supporters and detractors for both propositions. Unions like CWA and labor activist Dolores Huerta have endorsed Prop 26, while coming out against Prop 27. FanDuel, DraftKings, and Major League Baseball are all in on Prop 27. Meanwhile, both the California Democratic and Republican Parties are against 27. Who says bipartisanship is dead?

Proposition 26 Tribal In

Roy Schmidt left out of Republican voter guide

Knock LA Recommendation: YES

Proposition 26 would allow in-person commercial sports betting at racetracks and existing highly regulated Native American casinos for adults 21 and up. It would also allow the casinos to offer other ways to gamble, such as roulette and dice games. It includes an additional safeguard that would allow anyone to sue an entity they suspect is conducting illegal gambling activities.

The California Legislative Analysts Office estimates that this measure would generate tens of millions of dollars annually in revenue for vital services and state priorities, such as education. Part of that money would be made available to the Revenue Sharing Trust Fund, which is made available to non-gaming tribes.

The important thing to note here is that Prop 26 would legalize in-person sports betting, which is much easier to regulate than online gambling in terms of preventing underage gambling and ensuring protections against problem gambling. It would also allow California tribes to continue to benefit from casinos as their primary economic engine, which is partly why it is strongly supported by a coalition of 42 member tribes at the California Nations Indian Gaming Association.

Assm. Sharon Quirk-Silvas track record and policy positions demonstrate that she will continue to be a champion for the constituents of AD-67. Prop 2: Funding Arts And Music Education

The League strongly supports a high-quality public education system in California. Because of a variety of voter-supported initiatives which limit and prescribe state and local spending, California does not provide the level of financial support for its schools that the League considers adequate. This proposition would provide additional financial resources , specifically for music and arts education.

The Public May Not See All Of The Jan 6 Committees Work For Decades If Ever

Why you wont see Gov. Gavin Newsom in California’s voter guide

Evidence the Jan. 6 committee doesnt release by the end of the year could be boxed away for decades or lost forever.

Gingrich told the New York Times that he was worried about what he called a 1964 division a rancorous, disabling rift between Trumps supporters and the anti-Trump wing of the party comparable to the divide in 1964 between the conservative Republicans who backed Barry Goldwater for president and the moderates who supported Nelson Rockefeller.

I can imagine a Trump-anti-Trump war over the next two years that just guarantees Bidens reelection in a landslide and guarantees that Democrats control everything, Gingrich said.

You can be sure thats what I asked Santa for. Itd be a better gift than 1,000 Trump NFT trading cards depicting the former president in superhero spandex or white tie and tails or riding a giant red, white and blue elephant.

Just imagine how it could play out.
