Amid the well-justified doom and gloom for Republicans, the Senate race in Michigan is giving the party a glimmer of hope in their bid to hang on to the chamber in November.

First-term Sen. Gary Peters is one of just two Democrats up for reelection in states President Donald Trump carried in 2016. For the better part of the election cycle, he’s been seen as a sizable favorite over Republican John James particularly as Trump sank in the polls in Michigan and elsewhere.

But two polls released in the past two days have shown Peters underperforming compared to his party’s presidential nominee, Joe Biden. And while Peters is still leading in all the polls including very small advantages in James’ publicly released internal surveys the race is too close for comfort for Democrats, especially with Biden well ahead of Trump and the party pushing into more Republican statesto broaden the Senate map.

Michigan Senate Election: Democratic Incumbent Gary Peters Holds Off Republican John James

LANSING, MICH. Democratic Michigan Sen. Gary Peters won reelection Wednesday, defeating Republican challenger John James in a tight, expensive race that was the states most competitive in two decades.

He continued Democrats’ dominance of Senate elections in the battleground presidential state. Republicans have won just once since the 1970s.

Peters is a former congressman, state lawmaker, lottery commissioner and investment adviser who served in the Navy Reserve. He ran by emphasizing his bipartisan work, his ranking as one of the most effective senators and James’ support for President Donald Trump.

I am sincerely honored that the voters of Michigan have once again put their trust and confidence in me to represent them in the United States Senate, Peters said in a statement. As we look ahead, I am energized to keep working to move our state forward and continue putting Michigan first.

Earlier in the day, James retweeted his campaign consultants claim that he had won this race despite Peters later taking and building his lead to about 74,000 votes, or 1 percentage point drawing criticism from Democrats. James’ campaign did not immediately comment on Peters’ victory.

Despite the win, Democrats sustained setbacks elsewhere and faced increasing odds in the battle to reclaim control of the Senate from Republicans.

Why Did Thomas Jefferson Create The Democratic Republican Party

Jefferson and several of his friends and associates became dissatisfied with the policies of the government. They formed a political association that came to be called the Democratic-Republican Party. They believed that the Constitution was a strict document that clearly limited the powers of the federal government.

The tight race comes as the Trump campaign and Republicans attempt to hold their ground in Michigan, a pivotal swing state that helped vote President Trump into office. The Times/Siena poll showed Joe Biden leading Trump among respondents by 48-40 percent.

James is considered a rising star within the Republican Party, a graduate of West Point who completed multiple tours in Iraq. Peters himself serves in the Navy reserves.

However, Stu Sandler, general consultant to Jamess campaign, wrote in a memo obtained by Fox that Democrats were nervous about losing Peterss seat.

Histories Of The Parties

The Democratic party started in 1828 as anti-federalist sentiments began to form. The Republican party formed a few decades later, in 1854, with the formation of the party to stopping slavery, which they viewed to be unconstitutional.

The difference between a democrat and a republican has changed many, many times throughout history. Democrats used to be considered more conservative, while the republican party fought for more progressive ideas. These ideals have switched over time.

Why Was The Second National Bank Controversial

President Andrew Jackson announces that the government will no longer use the Second Bank of the United States, the countrys national bank, on September 10, 1833. Jackson also objected to the banks unusual political and economic power and to the lack of congressional oversight over its business dealings.

What The Race Is About

The combination of Michigans swing state status, Peterss low name recognition, and Jamess profile and better-than-expected 2018 performance has sent gushers of money into Michigans Senate race this year.

And though Democratic Senate candidates across the country have been raising a lot more money than their Republican opponents, Michigan is an exception to this trend both Peters and James raised a little over $14 million in the third quarter this year. Outside groups are spending big too, including a super PAC funded by wealthy Republicans .

Poll averagesshow Joe Biden has built up about a 7-point lead over President Trump in Michigan. So to win, James will likely have to win over some Biden voters. He hopes to do so by portraying himself as a fresh face who can bring change, and defining Peters as unacceptable in some way. So James and his supporters have launched various negative attacks on Peters of dubious veracity suggesting hes doubled his wealth since taking office , or that hes an absentee lawmaker who misses many committee hearings .

Republicans are also hoping James can appeal to Black voters. Now, James wasnt particularly successful at this in his 2018 run he got just 4.8 percent of the vote in Detroit but a recent poll from EPIC-MRA for the Detroit Free Press found a surprisingly large number of Black voters were undecided or intending to vote third-party this year.

Michigan Democrats Push John James To Clarify Stance On Supreme Court Vacancy

John James wins Republican nod for US Senate, will face Debbie Stabenow

Republican U.S. Senate candidate John James speaks at a rally for President Donald Trump Thursday, Sept. 10, 2020 in Freeland Mich.

Michigan Democrats are pressuring Republican U.S. Senate candidate John James to state whether a vacancy on the Supreme Court should be filled before the Nov. 3 election.

James issued a statement Monday urging his opponent, U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, to fairly and honestly evaluate the candidate whenever a nominee is put forward. The statement did not address whether the Senate should confirm a nominee before the election, however, and James’ campaign declined to clarify his position further when asked by MLive.

Peters campaign and U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Lansing, who James unsuccessfully challenged in 2018, said James is hiding his position from voters. The Michigan Democratic Party held a press call Thursday pushing James to take a public stance on the issue.

If James wants to be an independent voice for Michigan, then he should prove it, said MDP Chair Lavora Barnes. Nows the time when James could break from his party and let Michiganders voices be heard. We deserve the truth, there is too much at stake in this election and voters need to know if James stands with Michigan, or with McConnell.

During a speech on the Senate floor Tuesday, Peters said filling a seat vacated by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg should wait until after Inauguration Day in 2021.

Left Wing And Right Wing Politics

Politics is said to be split in half and you either have left or right political views. Left-wing politics is typically associated with progressive ideas and equality. Democrats are viewed as left-wingers. Right-wing politics values tradition, equity, and survival of the fittest. Republicans are viewed as right-wingers.

Left-Wing

Left-wing beliefs are liberal in that they believe society is best served with an expanded role of the government. Examples of an expanded role for the government include entitlement programs such as social security and Medicare, Medicaid, universal healthcare, food stamps, free public education, unemployment benefits, strong environmental laws, and other regulations on industries.

Right Wing

Right-wingers believe that the best outcome for society is achieved when individual rights and civil liberties are paramount and the role and especially the power of the government is minimized. Right-wing ideology would favor market-based solutions to the issues that these government programs aim to tackle. For example, encouraging a freer marketplace for healthcare, driven by consumer choice to drive down costs. Or privately held retirement accounts like 401 plans instead of government-guaranteed Social Security.

Democrat Goes Republican Over Defunding Police ‘chaos’ On The Border

A Texas Democrat has jumped parties and joined the Republicans after becoming infuriated with his party’s policies on defunding the police and the current ‘chaos’ on the southern border.

Ryan Guillen, a Texas State Representative for House District 31, made the announcement in a press conference on Monday.

He won’t cross the aisle immediately but will instead seek reelection in the same south Texas seat.

Guillen blames his switch from the Democrats as being as a result of the party moving further to the left meaning the party’s values no long align with his own citing the ‘Defund the police’ movement and crisis on the border as the catalysts for his sudden departure.

‘Friends, something is happening in South Texas, and many of us are waking up to the fact that the values of those in Washington, D.C., are not our values, not the values of most Texans,’ Guillen explained.

‘The ideology of defunding the police, of destroying the oil and gas industry and the chaos at our border is disastrous for those of us who live here in South Texas,’ he continued.

‘Throughout my entire career, creating a prosperous business climate, defending the Second Amendment, and protecting the lives of the unborn are the cornerstones of how I have represented my district,’ Guillen said.

Guillen also says he is switching parties after Republicans made inroads in South Texas and redistricting made his district much more favorable to the GOP at the next election.

‘both Parties Have Failed’

“I come to you proposing non partisanship,” James told the crowd. “I come to you to propose that both parties have failed the American people. The establishment of both parties have left us behind.”

Indeed, some of his popularity has been based on his decision to run as an outsider, Dulio said.

“That still works. A lot of Americans respond to that,” he said. “This wouldn’t be the first time that somebody has run for Congress, campaigning against Congress.”

His campaign believes Peters is vulnerable, has low name recognition, and has attempted to define him as someone who has been ineffectual as a senator, Dulio said.

Peters has rejected that tag, saying during a recent rally in Traverse City, Mich., that he was ranked “as one of the most effective United State Senators in getting things done and also ranked as one of the most bipartisan,” according to northern Michigan’s 9& 10 News.

Sen Gary Peters Edges Ahead Of Gop Challenger John James In Michigan

One-on-one with Republican senatorial candidate John James

Democratic U.S. Sen. Gary Peters beat out Republican challenger John James by only 1.6 percentage points in one of the most hotly contested statewide races in recent memory.

Peters won by a squeaker, 49.9 percent to 48.3 percent, in his bid for a second six-year term, but legal challenges or a recount are possible due to the closeness of the vote.

Peters and James were neck-and-neck much of Wednesday, with Peters edging ahead of James as full results from Wayne County, home to Detroit, trickled in late in the day.

“I am sincerely honored that the voters of Michigan have once again put their trust and confidence in me to represent them in the United States Senate,” Peters said in a press release Wednesday evening. “As we look ahead, I am energized to keep working to move our state forward and continue putting Michigan first.”

The race is thought to be one of the closest U.S. Senate races in state history, with Peters winning by 1.6 percentage points and James foiled for a second time in a bid that would have made him Michigans first African-American U.S. senator.

It was also one of the tightest Senate races nationwide in a cycle in which the Democratic Party fought to take control of the upper chamber and Republicans largely played defense. As of Thursday morning, the James campaign still hadn’t publicly conceded the race, despite the Associated Press declaring Peters the winner.

Bridge reporter Mike Wilkinson contributed to this report.
