Jeep Patriot 4 Wheel Drive

Don't Miss

How Well Do Jeeps Handle Rough Terrain

2016 Jeep Patriot | Four-Wheel Drive Operation

Jeep Wranglers, in particular, are all-terrain vehicles. Meaning they will conquer many rocky, hilly or uneven surfaces. Without the 4-wheel drive, Jeeps are not as reliable on slippery and wet surfaces.

Its up to the driver to take absolute control of the vehicle on slippery roads. This is even if the vehicle is 4-wheel drive capable. The 4-wheel drive system is designed to assist the driver to maneuver rough and uneven terrain.

In such rough driving conditions, a Jeep will always perform better than a car.

But a Jeep with 4-wheel drive will ultimately handle rough terrain better than one without 4-wheel drive.

These Jeep Models Have 4

These models only come in 4-wheel drive. This means none of these models are available in 2-wheel drive.

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • Jeep Wrangler
  • Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
  • These Jeep models are what youd be looking at in Jeeps 4×4 offers. They have the iconic 4-wheel drive that Jeep has been known for.

Take note that these particular models only come in 4-wheel drive, and not in any other variants like the front-wheel-drive systems.

The Wrangler has exceptional off-road capabilities. It is tried and tested against multiple competitors in the 4×4 segment and always comes out on top. This is due to the rugged nature that allows it to conquer unfriendly terrains with ease.

The 4-wheel drive in these models is always on, meaning you dont have to press any buttons to turn it on. With other 4-wheel drive alternatives, the feature needs to be turned on. This then shifts the power to each set of the wheels and you have 4-wheel drive.

This is not the case with these models.

Look-through our article which explains about Do Jeeps Hold Their Value?

The feature is always on and you dont have to press any buttons or look at the manual.

But while Jeep is the king of off-roading, theyll most certainly have alternative models that do not have this feature. The following models are available in two-wheel drive variants, meaning they forgo the 4-wheel drive and only the two front or back wheels receive power from the drivetrain.

The 4-wheel drive feature on the Jeep Wrangler or Jeep Grand Cherokee are always on by default and the driver does not have to do anything to turn the feature on. The system is on during dirt road driving and normal tar road driving.

Some manufacturers will have a huge manual that you can go through to understand how the cars 4-wheel drive system works. More information is great, but having the 4-wheel drive feature on all the time is even better.

The Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited are great examples of this. They have 4-wheel drive systems that function great in all types of road surfaces. So leaving a tarred road into a dirt road is easier on both models.

    Jeep Patriot Fwd Vs 44

The Patriot Latitude comes in either front-wheel drive or a four-wheel drive system that features a lock mode to enhance traction on poor road conditions and bad weather. This low cost 4-wheel drive locking feature is perfect for handling the brutal Midwest ice, snow and rain storms that strike with little warning. Here are some other key differences between the Jeep Latitude FWD and 4-wheel drive options:

Full Production Willys Mb And Ford Gpw

Final production version jeeps built by Willys-Overland were the Model MB, while those built by Ford were the Model GPW . There were subtle differences between the two. The versions produced by Ford had every component marked with an “F”, and early on Ford also stamped their name in large letters in their trademark script, embossed in the rear panel of their jeeps. Willys followed the Ford pattern by stamping ‘Willys’ into several body parts, but the U.S. government objected to this practice, and both parties stopped this in 1942. In spite of persistent advertising by both car and component manufacturers of contributions to the production of successful jeeps during the war, no “Jeep”-branded vehicles were built until the 1945 Willys CJ-2A.

The cost per vehicle trended upwards as the war continued from the price under the first contract from Willys at US$648.74 . Willys-Overland and Ford, under the direction of Charles E. Sorensen , produced about 640,000 Jeeps towards the war effort, which accounted for approximately 18% of all the wheeled military vehicles built in the U.S. during the war.

    Jeep Patriot Off Roading

Here are four off-road tips on how to fully equip your Jeep Patriot for some off-roading fun:

    • A Jeeps approach angle plays a big part in its off-road capability. The best way to improve this is by doing a lift or adding a skid plate, installing bigger mud-terrain tires, and getting a Jeep Patriot off road bumper .
    • If you dont want enormous tires, consider replacing your stock tires with a good set of Jeep Patriot off road tires like Cooper CS5 GRAND TOURING Radial Tire-205/70R16 97T . The specific design of these tires spells comfort, agile handling, and a quiet ride. Airing down these tires 12-15 psi also helps with traction when driving on muddy forest tracks.
    • Adding a roof-mounted fog light assembly makes night camping more thrilling. It can also substitute for a bonfire if you do not have planks of wood nearby.
    • You may want better fuel mileage when riding on forest trails and fields, but turning off your Traction Control will not help you in this area. It is a safety feature meant to keep your vehicle upright and on course in the event of slippage and is best left alone.

    How Much More Does 4

2012 Jeep Patriot | Four Wheel Drive Operation

2-wheel drive systems are more economical to produce and fuel-efficient because the engine only powers two wheels. You can expect to add between $2,000 and $3,000 more to get a 4-wheel drive of the same model.

The power in a 4-wheel drive system will also mean more cost on fuel. So overall, owning a 4-wheel Jeep will cost you more than the 2-wheel drive version. This is not so for Jeeps that allow you to turn the 4-wheel drive on and off at will. This means if the vehicle is not using the 4-wheel drive feature, the fuel cost wont skyrocket as much.

Jeeps arent cheap to begin with, so looking at the 2-wheel drive alternatives is totally understandable. This is ideal if you arent even sure youll ever need the 4-wheel drive feature.

The area you live in can also determine this.

If its snowy and wet where you live, spending more to get the Grand Cherokee or Wrangler Unlimited is justifiable.

For example, the Jeep Grand Cherokee can go for about $33,000, while the Jeep Compass sits at around $26,000 for the FWD version.

The price difference is quite big but it this does not mean the lower-priced Jeeps are not up to the task. Quite the opposite. Usually, the only difference in price will be due to the 4-wheel or 2-wheel drive systems. In light snow and wet conditions, the 2-wheel drive Jeeps are surprisingly stable and will not disappoint.

For the extra ruggedness under heavy terrain though, the 4-wheel drives will likely perform better.

    The Jeep Patriot: An Overview

Lets take a closer look at what the Jeep Patriot has to offer.

The Jeep Patriot was technically discontinued in 2017, but while it was in production, it was offered in three different models: the Sport, Limited, and North Edition.

The vehicle also had two options for engines. The first was the mediocre 2L, four-cylinder engine that offered 141 lb-ft torque and 158 horsepower. The second model was a more impressive 2.4L engine with 175 horsepower and an upgraded torque of 165 lb-ft.

However, its important to note that even the most recent 2017 Patriot is only rated to two 2,000 lbs- not very impressive for an adventure ride. If youre hoping to tow any large toys, trailers, or boats, the Jeep Patriot is not for you.

Both engines were available in three different models: FWD, AWD, and 4X4.

The Front Wheel Drive model is not the edition to go for when it comes to off-roading. While it can probably power through some sand and mud with the right tires, youll lose traction quickly when it comes to the front-wheel drive. Its better suited for warm climates where you wont need traction on ice and snow every year.

The All-Wheel-Drive has a little more to offer, with the standard mode operating in front-wheel drive and the back wheels engaging at 50% when necessary to supplement the vehicles traction. You can also lock the 50-50 mode when traveling below a certain speed.

    The Capabilities Of The Patriot

The Jeep Patriot 4×4 can travel over dunes, mud, snow, and rocky slopes. The engaged four-wheel-drive mode can provide traction when driving on slick, icy roads or through messy mucky trails.

The 17-inch tires keep the Patriot off the ground with 8 inches of clearance to conquer most dirt trails and terrain. The skid plate protects the undercarriage from jagged rocks and hidden stumps. This Jeep model also has an approach angle of 26.4 degrees, which gives it an ascent angle of 24 degrees and a decent angle of 29-degrees.

The air intake on the Patriot is placed high enough that the vehicle can cross streams and conquer puddles easily. Waterways up to 19 inches deep are no issue for the Jeep Patriot.

Theres also off-road traction control, which helps to compensate in muddy, snowy conditions. Theres a Hill Start Assist that prevents you from sliding backward and can help you climb steep slopes. The Hill Descent Control, on the other hand, keeps the vehicle in a low gear to control the descent speed of the SUV.

The Jeep Patriots ride is mostly comfortable on both roads and trails, but it doesnt produce the best feeling for either. Because its a crossover vehicle, you can expect to compromise a little bit when it comes to both categories that it tries to fulfill.

    Company History And Ownership

After the war, Willys did not resume production of its passenger-car models, choosing instead to concentrate on Jeeps and Jeep-branded vehicles, launching the Jeep Station Wagon in 1946, the Jeep Truck in 1947, and the Jeepster in 1948. An attempt to re-enter the passenger-car market in 1952 with the Willys Aero sedan proved unsuccessful, and ended with the company’s acquisition by Kaiser Motors in 1953, for $60 million. Kaiser initially called the merged company “Willys Motors”, but renamed itself Kaiser-Jeep in 1963. By the end of 1955, Kaiser-Frazer had dropped the Willys Aero, as well as its own passenger cars to sell Jeeps exclusively.

American Motors Corporation in turn purchased Kaiser’s money-losing Jeep operations in 1970. This time $70 million changed hands. The utility vehicles complemented AMC’s passenger car business by sharing components, achieving volume efficiencies, as well as capitalizing on Jeep’s international and government markets. In 1971, AMC spun off Jeep’s commercial, postal, and military vehicle lines into a separate subsidiary, AM General the company that later developed the M998 Humvee. In 1976 Jeep introduced the CJ-7, replacing the CJ-6 in North America, as well as crossing 100,000 civilian units in annual global sales for the first time.

The Jeep Patriot is remarkable off-road. Its proven ability to handle various tracks and adverse conditions has earned it its Trail Rating badge. Plus, its two engine options and 4WD systems provide excellent traction control and a 19:1 crawl ratio.

Despite its underrated status, this 2-in-1 SUV is still one of the best options out there when purchasing used vehicles. Not quite convinced? Let this article persuade you with information on the Patriots history, specs and features, off-roading mods, and more.

What Is The Advantage Of 4 Wheel Drive Over 2 Wheel Drive

4 wheel drive is primarily meant for off-road use. The low-range gearing allows it to crawl at extremely slow speeds, which is something that most 2 wheel drive vehicles would never be able to achieve.

In addition, 4 wheel drives are far more capable of traversing difficult trails compared to 2 wheel drives because they have greater traction on tough terrains. They are also better at acceleration than many vehicles of the same size as jeep wranglers.

According to the latest statistics, 4 wheel drive jeeps are much more reliable when it comes to off-road driving than their 2 wheel drive counterparts on trails.

It also allows you to power steer your jeep, which is important on steep and slippery slopes because it prevents you to slide backward. If you want a vehicle that is better off-road, then looking for a 4 wheel drive jeep is the best option available in todays market.

    Correct Understanding Of 4

mhoppes said:Today was the first real drive I’ve had with my pat in the snow.My understanding of how the 4-wheel drive system works is that when I turn it on the pat becomes a “front-wheel drive” vehicle until the computer senses them slipping, and then it shifts to rear-wheel.First, is this a correct understanding? And then secondly, when I started up from a near stop on a hill today with a fair amount of snow, and while in 4-Wheel, my back end started wanting to push out from behind me. Why would it do this if it was in 4-wheel? I would have expected the FWs to pull it unless they were slipping?

jepstr67 said:By putting the Patriot in 4×4, you force 1/2 of the power to go to the rear wheels. In AWD mode, the front wheels would have had more power, up to 100%, and the rear would not have tried to walk out from behind you.4×4 lock is a magnetic clutch in the drive system that equally distributes power 50-50 front and rear, then to 2 wheel on that axle.

mhoppes said:So hang on a second….I have a 2011 Jeep Patriot . I thought it was 4WD, not AWD. Are you saying that the Patriot is a FWD vehicle by default EVEN WHEN THE 4WD switch is off, and that it will switch to part-time 4WD by default, but when you pull up on the 4WD you are basically forcing it into 50% front/rear?
