Is Trump Closing Mexican Border

What Happens If Trump Closes The Mexican Border?

Democrats, however, are not yet on board. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer say the current package tilts too much toward helping big businesses without focusing enough on people who have lost work. It would also scale back a paid sick leave measure Congress passed just this week.

“We are beginning to review Sen. McConnell’s proposal and on first reading, it is not at all pro-worker and instead puts corporations way ahead of workers,” Pelosi and Schumer said in a joint statement Thursday night, hours after the GOP plan was introduced on the Senate floor.

Trump said he is optimistic after he and Schumer spoke this morning.

Closed For How Long Actually There’s A Study

A 2011 simulation study to analyze threats including terrorism and deadly pandemics predicted that America’s economy would collapse by nearly half if all U.S. borders were closed for a year. The study from the CREATE Homeland Security Center at the University of Southern California said cutting all imports 95 percent by shutting borders would in turn slice GDP by 48 percent.

However, if oil imports were allowed in and American workers “accepted real wage cuts” then the hit to GDP after a year would be closer to 11 percent, the study found.

The Lives Of Asylum Seekers

Most importantly, at stake is whether the U.S. will continue to be a country that allows people fleeing persecution to seek safety inside its borders. Remain in Mexico, and other related policies, like Title 42, which has shut down access to asylum at the southern border for over two years under the guise of public health, are attempts to dismantle longstanding U.S. asylum policy that uphold our commitment to international human rights norms.

During the two years the policy was in effect under Trump, Human Rights First documented over 1,540 reported cases of kidnappings, murder, torture, rape, and other forms of violence against asylum seekers returned to Mexico. U.S. and Mexican authorities have failed to establish adequate housing options or to provide access to medical care and work, leaving people vulnerable to transnational cartels who prey on migrants. Black and LGBTQ+ asylum seekers returned to Mexico have faced particularly severe risks.

If the Supreme Court prevents the Biden administration from ending Remain in Mexico, it will enshrine a new legacy for the United States a legacy of turning its back on international commitments and sending people directly into harms way.

Shortly after the tweeted threat, a senior administration official said that officers would be redeployed by DHS from ports of entry to other areas to intercept illegal border crossers. The official said that DHS has no active plans to close the border in its entirety.

Its short, at the moment, of the full closure of any port, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen told reporters, adding that Homeland Security will continue to operationally assess the situation at the border.

But I think what the president is making clear is with these numbers if we have to close ports to take care of all of the numbers who are coming, we will do that, Nielsen continued. Its on the table.

Trump has repeatedly railed against Mexico for not stopping Central American migrants from coming to the United States southern border and has threatened multiple times to close the border due to caravans over the past year with migrants from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

The president had yet to put a timeline on his proposed threat until now, but its still unclear what a border closure would entail or if its even possible.

What The Wall Would Mean For Crime In The Us

The Catch

Although President Trump has railed against the carnage of crime in the United States, the crime statistics, with few exceptions, tell a very different story.

From 1991 to 2015, U.S. homicides fell 36%

In 2014, 14,249 people were murdered, the lowest homicide rate since 1991 when there were 24,703, and part of a pattern of steady decline in violent crime over that entire period. In 2015, however, murders in the U.S. did shoot up to 15,696. This increase was largely driven by three citiesBaltimore, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. Baltimore and Chicago have decreasing populations, and all three have higher poverty and unemployment than the national average, high income and racial inequality, and troubled relations between residents and policeconditions conducive to a rise in violent crime. In 2016, homicides fell in Washington and Baltimore, but continued rising in Chicago.

There is no evidence, however, that undocumented residents accounted for either the rise in crime or even for a substantial number of the crimes, in Chicago or elsewhere. The vast majority of violent crimes, including murders, are committed by nativeborn Americans. Multiple criminological studies show that foreignborn individuals commit much lower levels of crime than do the nativeborn. In California, for example, where there is a large immigrant population, including of undocumented migrants, U.S.born men were incarcerated at a rate 2.5 times higher than foreignborn men.

Is The Border Open

Not quite. The Biden administration is leaning on a public health law invoked by the Trump administration to quickly expel migrants who are encountered at the US-Mexico border, typically single adults and some families.

In February, for example, the majority of migrants encountered at the US-Mexico border were immediately turned back and some of those tried to cross again. Numbers had started to steadily climb last summer.

Of the nearly 97,000 migrants who crossed the border illegally in February, around 70,100 were turned away, according to US Customs and Border Protection data. Those numbers may reflect some repeat crossers. If not for that Trump-era policy, they would generally be processed and come into US custody.

That is similar to how the border was operating over the last year under Trump, except for one difference unaccompanied migrant children arent being expelled.

The Biden administration, in the case of children, reverted to the process as it was pre-pandemic accepting unaccompanied children into the US and transferring them to the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services, which is charged with their care.

With kids were seeing something unique that is larger than what weve seen before, said Andrew Selee, president of the Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan think tank. With adults were also seeing larger numbers than we have in recent years, but theyre not getting in.

Donald Trump Threatens To Close Us Border With Mexico

President Donald Trump threatened Thursday to close the border with Mexico to prevent thousands of Central American migrants from reaching the United States, relaunching one of his favorite campaign themes three weeks before the crucial midterm elections.

I must, in the strongest terms, ask Mexico to stop this assault and if it is not able to do so I will call in the US military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN FRONTIER! .., a- he wrote on Twitter.

Mr. Trump also renewed his threats to cut financial aid to the Central American countries concerned.

The tenant of the White House thus straddles one of his main battle horses, which had contributed to his presidential victory in 2016, three weeks of legislative elections during which the Republicans could lose their current majority in the Senate or the House of Representatives.

On the way to the United States

About 2,000 migrants left San Pedro Sula, Honduras on Saturday in response to a call on social media.

The crowd subsequently crossed the border with Guatemala at Esquipulas, then split into two groups heading for the capital.

Another thousand Hondurans for their part crossed the border with El Salvador on Wednesday with the intention of crossing the country to join the march in Guatemala.

According to Mr. Trump, this march is directed by the Democratic Party, according to him in favor of the opening of the borders and which are at the origin of laws supposed to be lax.

WASHINGTON President Trump acknowledged Tuesday that closing the southern border with Mexico could damage the United States economy, but said protecting Americas security was more important than trade.

In remarks from the Oval Office, Mr. Trump reiterated his threat to shut the border if Mexico, Americas third largest trading partner, cannot restrict a flow of asylum seekers trying to cross into the United States. But the presidents economic team, concerned about the damage from such a move, said it was looking for ways to limit the fallout if Mr. Trump does do so.

Sure, its going to have a negative impact on the economy, Mr. Trump said, adding, but security is most important.

Security is more important to me than trade, he said.

Republican lawmakers, economists and business groups largely disagree with that assessment and warned this week that closing the border could cripple the flow of goods and workers and devastate American automakers and farmers, as well as other industries that depend on Mexico for sales and goods.

Mr. Trumps economic advisers have briefed him on the potential financial damage from a border shutdown and started looking for ways to mitigate it, including possibly keeping certain trading avenues open.

What Is The Situation At The Border

Trump threatens to close US-Mexico border

Thousands of desperate migrants from Central American states arrived at the Mexican side of the border in recent weeks in the hope of claiming asylum in the US.

Faced with a long wait to be processed, some have tried to cross the border illegally and migrants could be seen jumping frontier fences again this week.

Two child migrants from Guatemala died in the custody of US Customs and Border Patrol agents this month, and critics say care for migrant families and detention conditions are inadequate and unacceptable.

US Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is to see detention conditions at first hand on a visit to the border on Friday.

Ms Nielsen has called the latest death, that of eight-year-old Felipe Alonzo-Gomez on Christmas Eve, a deeply concerning and heartbreaking tragedy.

Supreme Court Certifies Ruling Ending Trump Border Policy

SAN DIEGO The Supreme Court on Monday certified its month-old ruling allowing the Biden administration to end a cornerstone Trump-era border policy to make asylum-seekers wait in Mexico for hearings in U.S. immigration court, a pro forma act that has drawn attention amid near-total silence from the White House about when, how and even whether it will dismantle the policy.

The two-word docket entry read judgment issued to record that justices voted 5-4 in a ruling issued June 30 that the administration could scrap the Remain in Mexico policy, overruling a lower court that forced the policy to be reinstated in December.

The White House and Homeland Security Department had no immediate comment on the Supreme Court certification the Justice Department declined comment. Officials in Mexico had no immediate comment.

Trump Thinking Of Completely Closing The Us/mexican Border

The chances for this is about 1%.

Trump said this for his political base

Mexico IS Americas Number 1 trade partner

Stopping the movement of people, goods and travel between the two countries tries because Mexico has had less virus incidents than America WOULD just about be the finishing touches of a serious recession for America that would seal Donald Trump s having just one term

If he lasted THAT long in office

Reuters reported that the administration was considering closing the southern border in an effort to contain the virus.

On Friday, a group of 11 Republicans led by Rep. Chip Roy to close the U.S. border with Mexico to prevent an outbreak.

Given the porous nature of our border, and the continued lack of operational control due to the influence of dangerous cartels, it is foreseeable, indeed predictable, that any outbreak in Central America or Mexico could cause a rush to our border, they wrote.

The letter came the same day a U.S. district court blocked the administrations remain in Mexico policy, meaning asylum-seekers could again await their cases on U.S. soil.

If todays ruling is allowed to stand, these successes will be reversed, which threatens to flood the Nations immigration system, present unchecked coronavirus entry risk, deeply damage our positive relationship with the Government of Mexico and other regional partners, and reignite the humanitarian and security crisis at the border, read a White House statement on the ruling.

Whether The Government Is Required To Detain All Asylum Seekers

    Trump threatens US

In ordering the Biden administration to resume the Remain in Mexico policy, the lower courts held that immigration law limits the federal government to only two options when people seek asylum at the border: detain them or forcibly return them to Mexico before their hearing. Since the Department of Homeland Security lacks capacity to detain all people seeking asylum, the judge reasoned that the only choice would be to send them to Mexico while their cases proceed.

This is a patently false choice. Congress has stipulated that DHS has broad power to avoid unnecessarily detaining people and to release people to their networks of care while their immigration cases proceed. In fact, all presidential administrations have exercised broad discretion to release people rather than restricting DHS to two binary choices including the Trump administration itself.

Donald Trump Threatens To Close The Border With Mexico

In another stunt of which he has no secrets, President Donald Trump threatened on Friday to completely close the border between the United States and Mexico if Democrats maintain their refusal to fund his anti-immigrant wall.

The US president made this new threat on the seventh day of the budget stalemate that is crippling about 25% of the US public service. Democrats, now in the majority in the House of Representatives, are refusing to approve the budget that provides funding for the $ 5 billion wall the president wants to erect along the border with Mexico.

More than 800,000 federal employees are on forced leave because of this budgetary standoff which has undesirable effects even in national parks: waste accumulates in the trails and toilets are overflowing in the absence of maintenance staff .

Donald Trump is betting to emerge a winner from this impasse by raising the tone. He launched a series of tweets Friday morning on Twitter. We will be forced to close the southern border entirely if the obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the wall and to change the ridiculous immigration laws, the president wrote.

He also threatened to cut aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, which do nothing to prevent immigrants from reaching the United States but who have taken our money for years.
