Over the last decade, Bloomberg helped Republicans take and maintain control of the U.S. Senate, which, in the Trump era and under Mitch McConnells leadership, has confirmed scores of right-wing judges, blocked liberal legislation passed by the House, and shielded the president from any repercussions after seeking foreign election assistance, tampering with witnesses, and defying congressional subpoenas.
Bloombergs Independence USA super PAC, which he funds exclusively, spent nearly $10.1 million supporting Republican federal candidates from 2012-16. The majority of that, $5.9 million, helped Sen. Pat Toomey win re-election in 2016 against Democrat Katie McGinty, an environmental policy expert and another Emilys List endorsee. In 2014, the super PAC boosted Republican House candidates Bob Dold and Michael Fitzpatrick . Two years earlier, Independence USA had spent $1.7 million backing Connecticut House candidate Andrew Rorabach, as well as $963,000 supporting Dold.
Americans for Responsible Solutions, a gun control-focused super PAC heavily funded by Bloomberg, also spends the majority of its money in favor of Democrats, but in 2014, when Bloomberg gave it $250,000, it backed Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins and Fitzpatrick . Collins recently voted to acquit Trump of both impeachment charges and said she thought Trump had a pretty big lesson from impeachment. In 2007, Bloomberg personally donated $4,600 to Collinss campaign, and in 2014, he gave $5,200.

Has Michael Bloomberg Always Been A Democrat
No. But he was a Democrat before he was a Republican, which was before he was an independent and way before his recent re-embrace of the party. Despite his socially liberal views, Mr. Bloomberg changed parties to run in the Republican mayoral primary in 2001. He registered as an independent midway through his time at City Hall. In 2016, he spoke in support of Hillary Clinton at the Democratic National Convention. In 2018, he officially returned to the party.

How Hes Gaining Traction In The Primary
Two national polls out this week show him in third or fourth place sometimes higher than Sen. Elizabeth Warren and the Iowa Caucus first-place finisher, former South Bend, Ind., mayor Pete Buttigieg.
There are a couple reasons Bloomberg is doing well right now, said Jim Kessler, a Democratic consultant with ties to the moderate section of the party. The big one is out of his control: a muddied Democratic field with voters still undecided about who is the best to take on Trump.
A lot of things needed to go right for the Bloomberg candidacy to take off, Kessler wrote in an email to The Fix. The field needed to be muddled, and it is. Biden had to underperform, and he has. And multiple candidates needed to be viable going into Super Tuesday, and that will likely be the case.
Bloomberg also escaped the kind of scrutiny that comes from leading in the polls. That could change if he meets the polling requirements to be on the debate stage in Nevada on Feb. 19.

Former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg plans to spend at least $100 million in Florida to help elect Democrat Joe Biden, a massive late-stage infusion of cash that could reshape the presidential contest in a costly toss-up state central to President Trumps reelection hopes.
Bloomberg made the decision to focus his final election spending on Florida last week, after news reports that Trump had considered spending as much as $100 million of his own money in the final weeks of the campaign, Bloombergs advisers said. Presented with several options on how to make good on an earlier promise to help elect Biden, Bloomberg decided that a narrow focus on Florida was the best use of his money.
The presidents campaign has long treated the state, which Trump now calls home, as a top priority, and his advisers remain confident in his chances given strong turnout in 2016 and 2018 that gave Republicans narrow winning margins in statewide contests.
Voting starts on Sept. 24 in Florida, so the need to inject real capital in that state quickly is an urgent need, Bloomberg adviser Kevin Sheekey said. Mike believes that by investing in Florida, it will allow campaign resources and other Democratic resources to be used in other states, in particular the state of Pennsylvania.
Save NYC instead, he added.
The spending will focus mostly on television and digital ads, in English and Spanish.

Were it not for his immense wealth, estimated at $55 billion, Bloombergs late entry would likely be dismissed as of little significance.

Does He Have A Chance
Mr. Bloombergs path is unconventional in the extreme: skipping the early-voting states and debates to focus on delegate-rich contests in March and beyond. He has the resources to pull it off millions upon millions of dollars of his own money to flood the airwaves with his ads. But if another candidate claims momentum in February, Mr. Bloomberg could have a difficult time breaking through.

After leaving office, Bloomberg returned to managing his namesake financial data and media company, Bloomberg LP. He continued to be involved in environmental causes, and in 2017 he published Climate of Hope: How Cities, Businesses, and Citizens Can Save the Planet . In 2018 Bloomberg launched the American Cities Climate Challenge, a $70 million program to help 20 cities fight climate change. The initiative came a year after Republican Pres. Donald Trump announced that he was withdrawing the United States from the Paris Agreement on climate change. A vocal opponent of Trump, Bloomberg pledged to spend at least $80 million to defeat Republicans in the 2018 midterm elections. That year he reregistered as a Democrat, raising speculation that he would run for president in 2020. Although Bloomberg announced in March 2019 that he would not seek the presidency, in November he officially entered the race. Despite spending more than $500 million, he struggled to gain support, especially after poor performances in two debates. In March 2020 he ended his campaign and announced his support for Joe Biden.
Bloomberg was the recipient of numerous honours, including the 2009 Mary Woodard Lasker Award for Public Service. In 2014 he was made an honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire .

Michael Bloomberg is a leading contender for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination despite being first elected mayor of New York City as a Republican, and later switching his party affiliation to independent.
Indeed, he announced his re-registration as a Democrat in October 2019 just weeks before unveiling his presidential bid.
That history and the billionaire businessmans penchant for donating to Republicans has led to consternation among some Democrats who wonder whether Bloomberg is really one of them.
So is he?
Hes never been as good a Democrat as Ronald Reagan was a Republican, Jim Frasier, former member of the executive committee of the Democratic National Committee, told PolitiFact. Hes every bit as good a Democrat as Bernie Sanders is.
In 1980, Reagan was elected president as a Republican, after having spent much of his early political life as a Democrat. In 2016, Sanders was runner-up for the Democratic presidential nomination, though he hasnt always identified as a member of the party.
Bloombergs campaign didnt offer comment for this article. But in a June 2018 column, Bloomberg explained why he was supporting Democrats in their attempts to win control of the U.S. House of Representatives that year.

In his quest for the Democratic presidential nomination, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has already spent nearly a quarter of a billion dollars, more than that of the major Democratic candidates combined. But, ironically, focusing on his immense campaign budget underrates the impact of Bloombergs money on his chances. Just as important is the political force of his charitable giving.
Traditionally, presidential nominations have been than by grassroots mobilization. Bloomberg may be able to gin up some public support through campaign ads and Tammany Hall-style politics, but in the inside game, it would seem he is at a disadvantage. He has never run for national office, has supported Republican candidates, and was himself a Republican.
But politics in America is increasingly organized around institutions reliant on big-donor philanthropy. Candidates, local and state parties, advocacy organizations, think tanks, and many foundations are in a constant scramble for money. Few leaders of these organizations will want to offend a man whose personal wealth makes their entire operating budgets look like a negligible rounding error.
Democratic Presidential Candidate Michael Bloomberg Is A Gop Bankroller
In June 2018, billionaire business executive and former Republican Michael Bloomberg hosted a fundraiser for Long Island GOP Rep. Peter King. At his lavish home in New York City, Bloomberg urged co-hosts to raise at least $10,000 for King, with whom he has a long-standing relationship, according to his adviser Howard Wolfson.
King was running against Democratic challenger Gretchen Liuba Shirley, who had strong fundraising and the endorsement Emilys List, a liberal political group that helps elect women. But a few months later, Emilys List invited Bloomberg, one of its major donors, to be a featured speaker at its conference. Not only had Bloomberg raised money for the opponent of one of the groups candidates, but he was under fire for dismissive comments about the Me Too movement.

In October 2018, just after his Emilys List speech, and as he mulled a run for president, Bloomberg became a Democrat for the first time since 2000. His partner switched from Republican to Democrat. In 2000, Bloomberg had been a lifelong Democrat but morphed into a Republican to run for New York City mayor after popular GOP Mayor Rudy Giuliani termed out. Bloomberg was a Republican for the first half of his 12 years in office before becoming an independent.

Past Election Spending Pays Off
Despite his Republican past, Bloombergs previous election spending and funding for gun-control groups appears to be paying off.
Bloomberg is racking up support from Democratic elected officials, including 13 members of the House. On Wednesday he got endorsements from three members of the Congressional Black Caucus, even after audio emerged of his comments in full support of the racist stop-and-frisk policing method. Rep. Gregory Meeks , Rep. Lucy McBath , and Virgin Islands House Delegate Stacey Plaskett , endorsed the former mayor.
Independence USA spent $130,000 in favor of gun control activist McBath in the 2018 elections, and it spent over $2.2 million that year to help elect Rep. Mikie Sherrill , who has also endorsed Bloomberg. The super PAC arm of House Majority PAC, to which Bloomberg donated nearly $500,000 in 2018, also spent in favor of Sherrill. Bloomberg is by far the biggest donor to House Majority PAC in the 2020 cycle so far, having given $10 million.
Rep. Harley Rouda , who endorsed Bloomberg, got a boost from Independence USA in 2018 as the super PAC spent nearly $4.5 million against his Republican opponent, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher. And Rep. Haley Stevens , who has endorsed Bloomberg, benefited from over $2.2 million of Independence USA spending.

Democratic presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg is paying social media influencers to back him in the hope of reaching younger voters.
His campaign has commissioned some of the internet’s top-viral creators to generate content about him that has reached tens of millions of followers.
The former New York Mayor’s campaign director said its meme strategy was new to presidential politics.
He has already spent more than $300m in his bid to win the White House.
Mr Bloomberg, a former Republican, is one of eight remaining contenders vying to become the Democratic presidential candidate who will challenge President Donald Trump in November’s election.
Sabrina Singh, Mr Bloomberg’s national spokeswoman, said: “Mike Bloomberg 2020 has teamed up with social creators to collaborate with the campaign, including the meme world.
“While a meme strategy may be new to presidential politics, we’re betting it will be an effective component to reach people where they are and compete with President Trump’s powerful digital operation.”
