Nearly 75% Who Voted Tuesday Are Dissatisfied About The Country

Nearly three in four voters were dissatisfied about the country as they headed to the polls Tuesday, according to early exit polling. That includes almost a third who said they were angry. Almost three-quarters said the economy is bad, and nearly half of voters said their family’s finances are worse than they were two years ago.

The top issue overall that’s driving voters to the polls is inflation. This is particularly true among those who are voting Republican. Abortion comes in second, especially among those voting Democratic.

Where Are The Remaining Votes In Arizona And Nevada

All eyes are on Arizonas and Nevadas Senate races, but where are the remaining votes?

As of Wednesday afternoon, about 31% of the vote remains in Arizona. Maricopa and Pima counties account for the lions share of those votes, with more than 500,000 ballots between them. Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly is leading in both of those counties.

Approximately 20% of the vote remains in Nevada. Clark County, which includes Las Vegas, has the most outstanding ballots, with more than 100,000 remaining. Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto is leading in Clark. But Republican Adam Laxalt is leading in Washoe, where more than 70,000 ballots remain.

Who’s Running For President In 2020

Former Vice President Joe Biden is challenging President Donald Trump.

Following Democrats’ sweeping victories in the House of Representatives during the 2018 midterm elections, many in the party were eagerly anticipating the 2020 presidential election and the opportunity to unseat President Donald Trump.

The field of candidates was large — even as some candidates dropped out, more seemed to throw their hats in the ring. In November, for example, two people who had earlier ruled out 2020 runs launched presidential campaigns.

Following Super Tuesday, the Democrats still in the running were former Vice President Joe Biden, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. Gabbard suspended her campaign on March 19 and in April, Sanders suspended his campaign amid the novel coronavirus pandemic that roiled the 2020 election cycle.

Three Republican challengers also declared their intention to run, even as some state party officials were canceling their nominating contests. All three have since suspended their runs in the Republican primary.

Here’s who is running:

Latino Democrats See The Election Results As A Rebuke Of The ‘conservative Latino’ Narrative

Zoltan Istvan, a Leader in Science and Technology, Will Run for US ...

Tuesday’s election results show that Latino voters aren’t as conservative as many political pundits have come to believe, according to a leading Democratic Latino campaign organizer.

“Since the end of the 2020 cycle there has been this running narrative that Latinos are becoming more conservative that has only increased in the past couple of months,” said Victoria McGroary, executive director of Bold PAC, which is the campaign arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. “The narrative was ‘this is where the Latino community is going’ and it’s just not true and it’s something that we’ve known for a while.”

McGroary said despite a plethora of stories highlighting Latina women running for Congress, many of the big Republican names like Mayra Flores and Cassy Garcia in Texas, Yesli Vega in Virginia and Yvette Herrell in New Mexico, lost. Races have been called for five new Latino Democratic representatives, including Max Frost in Florida who will become the first Gen Z member of Congress, and more are likely to join.

“These are advocates for our communities for their communities. They are coming they are ready to make that change,” McGroary said. “They are not coming to sit around and watch anything they are ready to lead the charge and fight for change.”

Florida Gov Ron Desantis

DeSantis campaigns for New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin at a rally in Hauppauge, N.Y.

DeSantis should cruise to reelection on Tuesday over his Democratic challenger, former Rep. Charlie Crist.

The margin of his victory will be important, however.

A resounding win in a national battleground would be powerful evidence of DeSantiss electability even though he draws the fury of Democrats and liberals for his policies on immigration, voting rights and education, among other topics.

As of Sunday evening, DeSantis led Crist, himself a former governor, by 11.5 percentage points in the RealClearPolitics average.

If Trump were to unexpectedly decline to enter the race, DeSantis would immediately become the favorite.

If Trump launches a campaign, as expected, DeSantis is almost certainly the only person in the GOP with any realistic chance of defeating him.

Florida Gov Ron Desantis Coasts To Re

Floridas Republican Governor Ron DeSantis easily won re-election on Tuesday night, according to the Associated Press, positioning him for potential national ambitions or a future bid for the presidency.

DeSantis faced Democrat Charlie Crist, who himself served as a Republican Governor of Florida from 2007 until 2011. With 80% of votes counted, De Santis had 58% of the vote to Crists 41%.

A rising star in the GOP, DeSantis defined his first term as governor with resistance to pandemic-era restrictions and brash right-wing stances on Americas culture wars. His funding vastly outpaced Crists, and he focused his campaign on criticizing Democrats for what he described as the woke agenda. Widely considered to be a future Republican presidential contender, the conservative firebrand made headlines this year for his stances on LGBTQ issues, handling of immigration policy, and investigations into alleged voter fraud. He repeatedly drew liberal ire and swallowed media cycle after media cycle, leaving Crist and his moderate approach largely ignored.

Us Sen Marco Rubio Of Florida

Rubio, who came in third place during Iowa’s 2016 GOP caucuses, returned for events in Mason City and Ames in August 2021. He told reporters hes focused on helping the friends he made in the first-in-the-nation caucus state while gearing up for his own reelection Senate bid.

Having done this once, there’s no purpose of being coy about it, I’m running for reelection in Florida to serve in the United States Senate, he said. I’m not having any conversations about running for president, but I have friends here.

Election Deniers Won Senate Races In Ohio And Wisconsin

How many Democrats are running for president in 2020?

In the Ohio Senate race, J.D. Vance, who said this year, I think the election was stolen from Trump, defeated Democrat Tim Ryan, NBC News projects.

In the Wisconsin Senate race, Republican Sen. Ron Johnson beat Democrat Mandela Barnes. Johnsons office was involved in an attempt to deliver fake elector materials to then-Vice President Mike Pence on Jan. 6. Johnson has acknowledged texting with one of Trumps attorneys before and after his staff tried to deliver a package to Pence, but he has also said he knew nothing about the fake elector scheme.

Johnson initially said hed object to certifying the Electoral College vote in key states on Jan. 6 but changed his mind after the riot and voted to certify.

Democrats Hold Their Own In The Suburbs

In 2018, the suburbs delivered Democrats the House majority. In 2020, they vaulted Joe Biden to the presidency.

And in 2022, suburbs across the country went a long way to helping Democrats avoid a significant red wave.

Republicans may still win the House, but if the 2022 election was going to be a red wave, it was likely to come through suburban victories that have not materialized yet.

In a district made up of the Kansas City suburbs, CNN projected Democrat Sharice Davids would win reelection. In Ohio, CNN projected two suburban wins: Democrat Greg Landsman defeated Republican Rep. Steve Chabot in a district that included Cincinnati and some of the surrounding suburbs and Democratic state Rep. Emilia Sykes defeated Republican Madison Gesiotto Gilbert in a district that includes areas around Cleveland and all of Akron. In Illinois, CNN projected that Democratic incumbent Lauren Underwood would win reelection against Republican Scott Gryder in the Chicago suburbs. And in Virginia, CNN projected Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger would win reelection, largely because of the votes she picked up from the suburbs of Washington, DC.

Biden Speaks With Mccarthy As House Control Remains Too Early To Call

President Joe Biden spoke on the phone Wednesday night with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who earlier in the day announced his bid for House speaker should the GOP win control of the chamber.

Asked by reporters at the Capitol about the call, McCarthy said it was “good.”

The White House did not provide any details about the conversation.

Control of the House is too early to call, according to NBC News projections. Key races in California and other Western states have yet to be called.

Election Deniers Won Two Attorney General Races In Battleground States

Joe Walsh presidential campaign, 2020

In Florida and Ohio, Republican attorneys general Ashley Moody and Dave Yost won their re-election campaigns, NBC News projects. State attorneys general can launch or defend against election lawsuits that could affect how and which votes are counted.

Moody joined a lawsuit that sought to prevent four other states from certifying their 2020 election results. Yost filed briefs in support of the lawsuit.

Overall, at least 43 election deniers ran for governor, secretary of state or attorney general across 27 states, according to States United Action, a nonpartisan group that closely tracked such candidates throughout the 2022 election season. Some of those candidates promised or hinted at taking actions that could contribute to an even more robust effort to overturn the next presidential election.

Elections experts have said that an election denier who takes a key position in a battleground state could affect elections for years. For that reason, Democrats running against them argued that their opponents were dangers to the country and sought to make the election a referendum on democracy. However, over the course of the general election campaign, many GOP candidates backed off or waffled on direct claims of a stolen election.

The Midterm Elections Biggest Losing Bets: Two Measures Seeking Sports Gambling In California

Nearly a half-billion dollars were poured into campaigns aimed at bringing sports gambling to California at tribal casinos and online, in what turned out to be the biggest losing bets of this political season.

Propositions 26 and 27 not only lost they went down in overwhelming numbers rarely seen in modern 50-50 politics.

Proposition 26, which sought to bring point spreads to Native American casinos, was rejected by 70.1% to 29.1%, with nearly all precincts reporting, tallies showed Wednesday. Meanwhile, Proposition 27, the measure that sought to legalize online sports betting, went down to even greater defeat, 83.3% to 16.7%.

This might go down in history in the Michael Bloomberg Hall of Fame, said Dan Schnur, a campaign finance reform advocate, poking fun at Bloombergs brief $1 billion presidential run in 2020.

Democratic Rep Tom Malinowski Of New Jersey Loses Re

Rep. Tom Malinowski, D-N.J., has lost his re-election bid to Republican Thomas Kean Jr., NBC News projects.

Malinowski, a U.S. diplomat during the Obama administration, was elected to Congress in 2018.

Kean, a former state senator whose father was governor, had made three unsuccessful runs for Congress including in 2020, when he nearly beat Malinowski.

Doj Announces It Will Monitor Polls In 24 States During Midterm Elections

The Justice Department announced it will monitor polls across the country to ensure compliance with federal voting rights laws only a day before the midterm elections that could realign the majority party in Congress.

The department’s Civil Rights Division selected 64 jurisdictions in 24 states, including Alaska, Florida, Georgia and Nevada, for oversight in both the general election and early voting. The division has routinely monitored elections in the field, starting with the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Personnel from the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Office of Personnel Management will assist the DOJ Civil Rights Division in monitoring efforts and maintaining contact with state and local election officials.

Poll monitoring is part of the division’s mission to protect the civil right to vote under the Voting Rights Act, the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, the National Voter Registration Act, the Help America Vote Act, the Civil Rights Acts and the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to the DOJ.

Fetterman Flips Pennsylvania In A Major Victory For The Democrats

Trump Accepts Republican Nomination For President At The 2020 RNC | NBC News

Democrat John Fetterman beat Trump-backed Republican celebrity television doctor Mehmet Oz in the Pennsylvania Senate race, flipping control of the seat currently held by Republican Pat Toomey, who is retiring. Its a key pickup for Democrats, who are inching closer to retaining the Senate in what many originally expected to be a bruising midterm election for the party.

We held the line. I never expected that we were gonna turn these counties blue, but we did what we needed to do, Fetterman, who overcame doubts in the final weeks about the extent of his recovery after suffering a stroke in May, said to a crowd of cheering supporters in a victory speech in the early Wednesday hours.

It was one of the most closely watched races of the election. Fetterman, the states lieutenant governor since 2019, and Oz, who won a competitive Republican primary in May, ran one of the most contentious and expensive races in the country, in a competition seen as a proxy battle between Biden and Trump. Fettermans win is a blow for Trump, who endorsed Oz in the primary and campaigned for Oz in the run up to the general election on Tuesday. Biden, too, appeared on the campaign trail in Pennsylvania, three times in support of Fetterman in just the final three weeks, according to the AP.

Trump Is Damaged Goods

Trump is still the dominant figure in the Republican Party, and hell be the favorite to win the GOP nomination for president if, as expected, he runs again.

But Trumps place in the party is far weaker after Tuesday. Truth is, if not for the former presidents interventions, the night could have been a lot better for the GOP.

Just look at how the most Trump-y candidates fared in states where more traditionalist Republicans were on the same ballot.

In Georgia, Herschel Walker was locked in a neck-and-neck contest with Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock. Gov. Brian Kemp, whose resistance to overturning the 2020 results infuriated Trump, easily defeated his Democratic opponent, Stacey Abrams.

In New Hampshire, Republican Don Bolduc lost to Sen. Maggie Hassan in a race that didnt even look close, while Gov. Chris Sununu, who once referred to Trump as , cruised to reelection. Trumps preferred candidate in Ohio, J.D. Vance, did better, beating Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan by a comfortable margin in that states U.S. Senate race. But he came nowhere close to the margin that incumbent Gov. Mike DeWine, a more traditionalist Republican, put up.

In Arizona, it was still early, with only about half of the expected vote in. But Kari Lake was running behind Katie Hobbs. Even if she comes back to win, it will be a closer race than political professionals of both parties had predicted had a more traditionalist Republican, Karrin Taylor Robson, made it through.

Us Sen Tim Scott Of South Carolina

Scott has made at least five public trips to Iowa since 2019 to help campaign for Iowa Republicans. At a June Cedar Rapids event, he touted Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds school choice agenda.

And in August, he headlined an event for U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson, who is seeking reelection in November. Midway through his speech at that event, a member of the audience shouted, Tim Scott for president! Of my homeowners association, yes! Scott replied.

Rep Jim Banks Announces He’ll Vie For Majority Whip If Gop Wins House

Kyle Stewart, Allan Smith and Scott Wong

Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana on Wednesday told his GOP colleagues that he intends to run for majority whip if Republicans take the House.

In a letter provided to NBC News by his office, Banks cited his tenure as chairman of the Republican Study Committee, a conservative caucus with more than 150 members, and talks about his connections with the conservative Heritage Foundation and American Conservative Union.

Reps. Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee, the House GOPs campaign arm, and Drew Ferguson of Georgia, the current chief deputy whip handpicked by the current GOP whip, Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, are also vying for the job.

Its a position that, assuming Republicans regain control of the lower chamber, will fall third in line behind McCarthy, from California, and Scalise, who is likely to serve as majority leader in a Republican-controlled House.
