After Years Of Fighting For It Democrats May Release Trump Tax Return Information

Obama’s handwritten letter to President Trump revealed

Democrats on the chief tax-writing committee in the House could vote on Tuesday to release tax return information on Donald Trump after winning a prolonged legal battle against the former president in the final weeks of Democratic control of the lower chamber.

The Ways and Means Committee announced a meeting for Tuesday afternoon on documents protected under Internal Revenue Code section 6103, the rule under which Democrats were able to obtain Trumps tax records from the Treasury for years 2015 to 2020.

A vote at that meeting to issue a report to the wider Congress involving Trumps tax information could open a new chapter in the saga of Trumps tax returns, which were a source of great frustration for Democrats during Trumps presidency after he broke with decades of presidential precedent by not sharing them upon entering office. It could also help to close the book on the matter once and for all.

Congressional experts say the contents of such a report to Congress could vary.

Does that report have all the information that the Ways and Means Committee obtained? Does it have part of the information, perhaps in summary form? Steve Rosenthal, an analyst with the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, said in an interview. Or perhaps a conclusion saying the Ways and Means Committee reviewed these tax returns and theres nothing to worry about. It could be a very short report including summary documents.

A False Positive Scare

CNNs Oliver Darcy was all over this story from last week. Before Vice President Kamala Harris interview on Fridays The View, co-hosts Ana Navarro and Sunny Hostin were asked to leave the set because both had tested positive for COVID-19. Well, turns out, the results appear to have been false positives. They have subsequently taken three more tests and the results have been negative.

Navarro told CNNs Anderson Cooper on Friday that she is doing great. Meanwhile, Harris was supposed to be interviewed in person on The View set, but instead was interviewed remotely as she sat in a room isolated from hosts Joy Behar and Sara Haines.

It takes so much work to do an interview like this and its something that we were excited about, Navarro told Cooper. We were prepared to ask some tough questions. We were very proud to have the vice president come on The View and all of a sudden it turned into an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. It was just surreal.

House Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal released a report about the Internal Revenue Services audits of Trumps taxes late Tuesday, but the actual tax returns will be made public in a few days after the redaction of personal information, such as Social Security numbers.

The documents released include a report summarizing Trumps personal and business income and tax payments from 2015 through 2020, showing that he and his companies lost millions of dollars during some of the years he was running for president and in the White House.

The report, prepared by the non-partisan congressional Joint Committee on Taxation, calls into question the validity of several deductions Trump claimed, including some unsubstantiated charitable donations, loans to his children that may be taxable gifts, and questionable business expenses.

The committee report noted that there were fewer documents than expected for an audit as complex as Trumps. In 2020, there were no audit files at all.

There werent any audits that took place. It was dormant, Neal told reporters about the IRSs presidential audit program.

Letter To President Trump Regarding Family Separation

IBM CEO Rometty in letter to Trump: Help secure

Recipient: President Donald Trump

Dear President Trump,

We, the undersigned national, state, and local organizations write to urge you to end the systematic and cruel separation of families apprehended at the U.S. border. Increased family separation at the border comes at a time when immigration enforcement has already torn apart families across the country, at places of worship, schools, and workplaces. Mothers and fathers who have lived in the U.S. for decades are being forced to decide whether they should leave their American children behind in the care of others for a secure and brighter future, or take them with them to a country now foreign to them. Children and young people are having to grow up fast as their mothers and fathers are forcibly taken away by Immigration and Customs Enforcement .

The American Academy of Pediatrics has condemned these policies, saying that highly stressful experiences, like family separation, can cause irreparable harm, disrupting a childs brain architecture and affecting his or her short- and long-term health. This type of prolonged exposure to serious stress known as toxic stress can carry lifelong consequences for children.

Tearing apart families does nothing to make us safer or stronger, and separating children from their parents betrays our deeply held American values.

We demand that you end these callous and cruel policies against immigrants and their families immediately.

Sincerely,

Trump Begs Supporters To Donate For Upcoming Lawsuit Against Cnn

Its been over a week since former President Donald Trump pledged that he would be filing a lawsuit against CNN.

Yet, instead of court documents being filed, Trump appears to be more preoccupied with begging followers to send in money to support the so far non-existent legal action.

Im calling on my best and most dedicated supporters to add their names to stand with me in my impending LAWSUIT against Fake News CNN, a new fundraising email sent out from the ex-president on Friday said.

Add your name IMMEDIATELY to show your support for my upcoming lawsuit against Fake News CNN, the message declared, linking to a donations page.

That email titled Lets SUE CNN was one of two CNN-inspired fundraising emails sent out on Friday.

A second email sent out hours later struck a similar urgent tune and said: Im going to look over the names of the first 45 Patriots who added their names to publicly stand with their President AGAINST CNN.

Last Wednesday, the former president threatened to sue the cable network and sent CNNs General Counsel David Vigilante and top CNN executive Chris Licht a letter titled, Notice of Intent to Bring Civil Action for Defamation.

Without regard for President Trumps genuine belief in his statements, CNN has published numerous articles characterizing him as a liar and the purveyor of the Big Lie, the Trump legal letter to CNN said.

Neither CNN nor a Trump spokesperson returned The Daily Beasts request for comment on Friday evening.

Memo From Trump Attorney Outlined How Pence Could Overturn Election Says New Book

ABC News Jonathan Karl covers the story in his new book on Trumps presidency.

US Capitol riots: Tracking the insurrection

In a memo not made public until now, then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows emailed to Vice President Mike Pences top aide, on New Years Eve, a detailed plan for undoing President Joe Bidens election victory, ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl reports.

The memo, written by former President Donald Trumps campaign lawyer Jenna Ellis, is reported for the first time in Karls upcoming book, Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show demonstrating how Pence was under even more pressure than previously known to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Ellis, in the memo, outlined a multi-step strategy: On Jan. 6, the day Congress was to certify the 2020 election results, Pence was to send back the electoral votes from six battleground states that Trump falsely claimed he had won.

The memo said that Pence would give the states a deadline of 7pm eastern standard time on January 15th to send back a new set of votes, according to Karl.

Then, Ellis wrote, if any state legislature missed that deadline, no electoral votes can be opened and counted from that state.

The day after Meadows sent Ellis memo to Pences aide, on Jan. 1, Trump aide John McEntee sent another memo to Pences chief of staff, Marc Short, titled, Jefferson used his position as VP to win.

I wouldnt dispute it, Trump said to Karl.

WASHINGTON First he said that he was working and cooperating with government agents who he claimed had inappropriately entered his home. Then, when the government revealed that the F.B.I., during its search, had recovered nearly a dozen sets of documents that were marked classified, he suggested the agents had planted evidence.

Finally, his aides claimed he had a standing order to declassify documents that left the Oval Office for his residence, and that some of the material was protected by attorney-client and executive privilege.

Those are the ever-shifting explanations that former President Donald J. Trump and his aides have given regarding what F.B.I. agents found last week in a search of his residence at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla.

Mr. Trump and his allies have cast the search as a partisan assault while amplifying conflicting arguments about the handling of sensitive documents and failing to answer a question at the center of the federal investigation: Why was he keeping documents, some still marked classified, at an unsecured Florida resort when officials had sought for a year to retrieve them?

The stunning revelation made clear the gravity of the Justice Departments inquiry months after the National Archives and Records Administration said it had discovered classified information in documents Mr. Trump had held onto after leaving office.

What he doesnt have the right to do is possess the documents they are not his, Jason R. Baron, a former director of litigation at the National Archives for more than a decade, said. There should be no presidential records at Mar-a-Lago, whether they are classified or unclassified or subject to executive privilege or subject to attorney-client privilege.

    Relationship With The Press

IBM CEO Rometty in letter to Trump: Help secure

Throughout his career, Trump has sought media attention, with a lovehate relationship with the press. Trump began promoting himself in the press in the 1970s. Fox News anchor and former House speaker have characterized Trump as a who makes controversial statements to see peoples heads explode.

As a candidate and as president, Trump frequently accused the press of bias, calling it the fake news media and the . In 2018, journalist recounted Trumps saying he intentionally demeaned and discredited the media so when you write negative stories about me no one will believe you.

As president, Trump deployed the legal system to intimidate the press. In early 2020, the Trump campaign sued The New York Times, The Washington Post, and CNN for alleged defamation in opinion pieces about Russian election interference. Legal experts said that the lawsuits lacked merit and were not likely to succeed. By March 2021, the lawsuits against The New York Times and CNN had been dismissed.

Trump Tried To Contact A Jan 6 Committee Witness Liz Cheney Says

    Senior Editor, Breaking News, HuffPost

Rep. Liz Cheney said former President Donald Trump attempted to contact a Jan. 6 committee witness.

During a hearing Tuesday, Cheney said the witness, who has not yet appeared publicly, did not answer a call from Trump and informed their attorney about the attempted contact.

The committee turned over information about the attempted contact to the Department of Justice, Cheney said.

    JM Rieger

Cheney said Trump called the witness after the last hearing, during which Cassidy Hutchinson, a former assistant to Donald Trumps chief of staff Mark Meadows, made a series of bombshell claims about the former presidents actions on Jan. 6.

Cheney did not name the witness.

Let me say one more time: We will take any effort to influence witness testimony very seriously, Cheney said.

At a hearing in June, Cheney suggested some of the committees witnesses had not testified as fully and forthrightly as others due to interference from people close to Trump, citing two statements from witnesses.

Legal experts told HuffPost that messages to witnesses could constitute obstruction of justice or tampering with a witness in an official proceeding, HuffPosts Arthur Delaney reported.
