Mr. Bidens argument about being the most electable candidate is increasingly not the subtext of his campaign its the text.

But it wasnt until the closing portion of the debate that he said Democrats had to be mindful of who can win and bring some coattails to ensure the party reclaims the Senate.

Who has the best chance, most likely chance, of defeating Donald Trump, who is the one most likely to do that? he asked, before continuing: Who can help elect Democrats to the United States Senate in states like North Carolina and Georgia and Arizona and other states?

For most of the night Thursday, however, he avoided stating why hed be the Democrat most likely to win against Mr. Trump, instead trumpeting his knowledge of foreign affairs and boasting that hes running on his near half-century in politics. With my experience comes judgment and a little bit of wisdom, Mr. Biden said.

Mr. Biden had one of his better debate performances Thursday, in part because he was able to make a succinct pitch for his viability and even more because he watched two of his most daunting rivals in Iowa, Mr. Buttigieg and Ms. Warren, tangle with each other.

It Can Be Done But Democrats Need To Start Employing A Smarter Strategy And Fast

President Trump master of turning subtext into text has made it official: He’s running for president again in 2020. Trump announced earlier this week that he’s hired his campaign manager a full 980 days before Election Day 2020.

Serious activists shouldn’t let their attention get too far ahead of this year’s midterm elections. Congress is a co-equal branch of government, after all. But with Trump already embarking on his re-election bid, it’s not too early for his opponents to begin strategizing for the next presidential election too, even though it won’t take place for another 32 months.

What should these Democrats do to dethrone the leader they loathe? Here’s a five-step plan for doing in 2020 what they couldn’t do in 2016: Defeat Donald Trump.

1. Realize that Trump is vulnerable

During the 2016 election, Trump appeared to be entirely scandal- and gaffe-proof. Incidents that would have spelled political death for any other candidate criticizing Gold Star families, getting caught on Access Hollywood musing about his power to treat women like objects for his pleasure only seemed to strengthen his standing with supporters. “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters,” he said, not without some truth.

2. Take nothing for granted and expand the map

So get out there. Make Trump earn all his votes including the Electoral College votes.

3. Stand for something

Probe your memory for the last time you heard Trump laugh.

You wont find a video showing him chuckle. James Comey realized this the night that Trump tried to lure the FBI director into serving Trump rather than America.

Months later, the thought of a man whom I had never seen laugh stayed with me. I wondered if maybe others had noticed it or if in thousands of hours of video coverage, he had ever laughed, Comey wrote in A Higher Loyalty.

I suspect his apparent inability to do so is rooted in deep insecurity, his inability to be vulnerable or to risk himself by appreciating the humor of others, Comey wrote. That is really very sad in a leader, and a little scary in a president.

This inability to laugh, to tell a joke, is indeed sad. For more than 31 years, Ive always felt sorry for Trump because I realized early on that he is incapable of joy. He has never experienced joys more durable companioncontentment.

A few videos do show Trump laughing. It is obviously forced laughter, not an emotional release and certainly not an uncontrollable belly laugh.

Trump cant tell a joke, either. Now and then he throws off one-liners that in the shorthand of news reports are labeled jokes. Theyre not.

He rarely gets jokesand never when he is the butt of the joke.

Certification Of Electoral College Votes

The 117th United States Congress first convened on January 3, 2021, and was scheduled to count and certify the Electoral College votes on January 6, 2021. There were 222 Democrats and 212 Republicans in the House there were 51 Republicans, 46 Democrats, and two independents in the Senate. Several Republican members of the House and Senate said they would raise objections to the reported count in several states, meeting the requirement that if a member from each body objects, the two houses must meet separately to discuss whether to accept the certified state vote. A statement from the vice president’s office said Pence welcomes the plan by Republicans to “raise objections and bring forward evidence” challenging the election results.

On December 28, 2020, Representative Louie Gohmert filed a lawsuit in Texas challenging the constitutionality of the Electoral Count Act of 1887, claiming Vice President Pence has the power and ability to unilaterally decide which slates of electoral votes get counted. The case was dismissed on January 1, 2021, for lack of both standing and jurisdiction. The plaintiffs filed an appeal, and the appeal was dismissed by a three-judge panel of the appeals court the next day.

After four court rulings upholding Congress legal right to review the documents, the final coming from the Supreme Court, the committee finally received six years of the former presidents income filings in November.

The House committee voted along party lines on Tuesday to make the documents public, which every president and candidate for the highest office in the land has done since Nixon except for Trump, and released a report on their findings after inspection.

The businessman and reality TV star that became the leader of the United States paid taxes the first three years as president. However, two of those years he only paid a total of $1,500 and the refund he received in the fourth year more than made up for what he sent to the nations coffers.

The 2020 Election By The Numbers

Its almost over. Yesterday Electoral College electors convened virtually or in person in state capitals across the country to cast their votes. The result was what everyone expected, the election of Joe Biden as president of the United States. With the election now essentially settledRepublican lawmakers may make one last doomed attempt to reverse the results when Congress meets on January 6 to confirm the Electoral College voteheres one last review of how the vote went.

The Electoral College

In 2016, seven electors declined to vote for the candidate they were pledged to. That was the highest number of faithless electors ever, with the exception of the election of 1872. That year sixty-three electors broke their pledge. They had a good reason to do so, however. They were pledged to Democratic candidate Horace Greeleyhe of Go West fame. Greeley died three weeks after losing to Ulysses S. Grant and before the Electoral College met. His pledged electors were understandably reluctant to vote for a dead man. Three electors, however, did cast their votes for Greeley.

Wisconsin: Jay Schroeder And Amy Loudenbeck

Unlike in Michigan, Arizona, Georgia and Nevada, in Wisconsin the secretary of state does not oversee elections. That responsibility belongs to the Wisconsin Elections Commission, the bipartisan state agency created by Republicans.

Schroeder and Loudenbeck, however, have both called for the dismantling of the commission.

Both candidates have instead called for the secretary of states office to oversee and administer elections. In Wisconsin, that office has not had responsibility for elections since 1974. Changing that would require approval by the Republican-controlled Legislature and the governor. Democratic Gov. Tony Evers has said he would not approve such changes, but he is up for re-election this fall, and all of his Republican opponents have vowed to abolish the Wisconsin Elections Commission. Other state Republicans have also aggressively criticized the agency following Bidens 2020 win in the state.

While Trump has not made an endorsement in the states Republican primary, hes been heavily involved in persuading other Republican lawmakers in Wisconsin to continue investigating the results of the 2020 election.

In an interview with NBC News, Schroeder, who was the Republican nominee for secretary of state in 2018, wouldnt acknowledge whether Biden won the state in 2020. Biden beat Trump in Wisconsin by 20,600 votes.

I wouldnt have signed off on the results, he said.

There would have to be proof, he said.

Lower White Support For Trump In Pennsylvania Michigan And Wisconsin

The three crucial northern battlegrounds of both 2016 and 2020 are the relatively white states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Each one flipped for Biden this election.

Exit polls in all three states indicate that more Democratic-favorable margins among different white blocs between 2016 and 2020 contributed to Bidens wins. See Figure 4 and .

Beginning with Pennsylvania, it is clear that white college graduatesboth male and femalevoted more Democratic in 2020 than in 2016. Particularly noteworthy is the change for white male college graduates , while white female college graduates increased their Democratic support from 14% to 19%.

Pennsylvanias seniors, too, registered a smaller Republican margin, while white noncollege men and women remained fairly strongly Republican. But the shift among white college-educated Pennsylvanians toward Democrats, strong nonwhite support, and greater support among young people were enough to seal Bidens win.

Trump Didn’t Steal The 2016 Election

Let’s start with what is still the toughest pill to swallow for Democrats: Trump won the White House fair and square.

The two-plus years of laser focus and high hopes connected to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation were the clearest examples that all too many Democrats believe the only reason Donald Trump is president is because the Russians somehow helped him cheat. Even the release of the Mueller Report showing no direct evidence of that hasn’t stopped this narrative from continuing to be promoted regularly.

But let’s face it, this is a very good way for the Democrats to lose to Trump again in 2020. Just like in sports, the worst way to overcome a loss in politics is to go around believing you didn’t “really” lose and no real improvements or changes need to be made by your team to win next time.

Now just imagine if the Democrats spent as much time and effort on winning back the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin as they have been in pursuing the Russia collusion obsession and the impeachment process. If the latest polls in those states tell us anything, those other efforts have only made things worse for the anti-Trump forces. It’s time to cut bait on the stolen election illusion.

The investigation is one of several that could result in criminal charges against the former president as he asks voters to return him to the White House in 2024.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who began investigating nearly two years ago, has said she will go where the facts lead. It would be an extraordinary step if she chooses to bring charges against Trump himself.

Even if hes acquitted by a jury, for him to face trial and to have a public trial with evidence on the record would be an epic thing for American history, Georgia State University law professor Clark Cunningham said.

How Democrats Won In 2018

Two important storylines about the Democratic Party emerged from the 2018 election.

The first is the rise of the far left, best symbolized by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezs upset victory against longtime Democrat Joe Crowley in New York. Ocasio-Cortez instantly became a leading voice in the new progressive wing of the party.

The second storyline to emerge has gotten far less attention but explains how Democrats actually won. While Ocasio-Cortez represents an important new force in the party, her win over a fellow Democrat didnt change the party makeup of the House. That bragging right goes to a crop of moderate Democrats who ran careful, pragmatic campaigns. They won on tangible policy ideas, like preserving the Affordable Care Acts provision on preexisting conditions. They werent calling for a revolution, so much as a return to stability.

An analysis by Alan I. Abramowitz at the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia found that candidates in the 2018 midterms who supported Medicare-for-all performed worse than those who did not.

Its true that the progressive left helped inspire enthusiasm, including a surge of new voters and young voters. Latinx voters made up a larger vote share in 2018 than in previous elections.

Ghitza also found that even though many of the Democratic wins were in suburban districts, rural areas largely moved in a Democratic direction, often by even larger margins than the suburbs.

The 2020 United States presidential election was the 59th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. Six years of former President Donald Trumps tax returns will be made available to the public following a vote by the House Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday.

Trumps tax returns for 2015 through 2020 will be released in the coming days, the committee stated, according to The Associated Press.

Meanwhile, a separate report from the House Ways and Means Committee found that the IRS failed to audit the former presidents tax filings in 2015 and 2016 despite it being mandatory for the presidents taxes to be audited each year.

Trump was only audited once during his presidency, which occurred after Democrats inquired after his tax returns in 2019, CNN reported.

A supplemental report on Trumps tax returns was also released by the committee Tuesday night. Though the full tax returns have not be released, the report details Donald Trump and Melania Trumps joint tax filings and how much they paid in taxes during his presidency.

In the first three years of his presidency, Trump declared massive losses in the total income category. In 2018, however, Trump reported a total income of $24.4 million, a huge turnaround from the previous years. In 2020, his income was once again in the negative.
