How Much Has Trump Spent On Travel

Don't Miss

How Much Is New

How much taxpayers spend to support former presidents

Various types of fencing totalling 654 miles were already in place before Mr Trump became president in 2017.

These ran through the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

The Trump administration say theyve completed more than 400 miles of border wall since then.

Its 452 miles in total, according to the latest US Customs and Border Protection information .

However, only 80 miles of new barriers have been built where there were none before that includes 47 miles of primary wall, and 33 miles of secondary wall built to reinforce the initial barrier.

The vast majority of the 452 miles is replacing existing structures at the border that had been built by previous US administrations.

President Trump has argued that this should be regarded as new wall, because its replacing what he called old and worthless barriers.

Comparing Trump Travel Expenses To Obama Travel Expenses

Summary of eRumor:President Trumps frequent weekend visits to his Mar-a-Lago in Florida cost taxpayers $3 million a pop, and President Trump outspent two years of President Obamas in travel expenses in less than three months. The Truth:President Trump spent far more time traveling in his first 100 days in office compared to President Obama but specific claims about Trump travel expenses are based on rough estimates that some argue doesnt paint a true picture of actual costs to taxpayers. The claim that each trip President Trump takes to Mar-a-Lago costs taxpayers $3 million is based on a 2013 Government Accountability Office report about the cost to taxpayers of a trip that President Obama took to Palm Beach, Florida, in 2013. The GAO evaluated the cost of Obama traveling to Chicago and then Palm Beach Florida between February 15 and February 18, 2013:

Given that President Trumps frequent trips to Florida and President Obamas trips to Florida in 2013 are roughly the same amount of time, its been widely reported in the media that, based on the GAO report, each Trump trip costs taxpayers $3 million. However, its important to note off the bat the 2013 GAO report includes costs for Obama traveling to Chicago before he headed to Florida a cost that should be excluded from Trump travel cost estimates:

Why The Trumps’ Travel Expenses Matter

Every previous first family took vacations. No previous first family profited off of them.

In early January, President Donald Trumps son Eric flew to Uruguay for a business trip. While he was there, Eric visited the unfinished Trump Tower in the resort town of Punta del Este, snappingpictures of the property with which to commemorate the visit on Twitter. To provide security for the trip, Eric Trump took along with him a retinue of Secret Service agents, as is customary for members of the first family traveling abroad with or without the president. According to The Washington Post, the bill for the tripor at least, the amount of taxpayer dollars spenttotaled $97,830.

That Eric Trump left the country is not unusual every first family has taken vacations while in office, although President Trump is the first in a generation whose children are old enough to jet-set on their own. The response is typically a textbook case of partisanship at work: The opposition party and its affiliated media outlets vociferously object to this use of taxpayer money the presidents supporters respond with classic whataboutism, wondering where all this outrage was when the last guy did the same.

Trump Has Spent As Much On Travel In A Month As Obama Did In A Year

Remember when Trump criticized Obama for wasting taxpayer money?

Donald Trump spent many years criticizing President Barack Obama for among other things spending too much taxpayer money on golfing trips, vacations and presidential travel on Air Force One. But according to a new report in The Washington Post, Trump’s travel during his first month in office has likely cost as much as Obama spent on travel in an average year.

Trump’s three consecutive weekend trips to his private Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida alone “probably cost the federal treasury about $10 million, based on figures used in an October government report analyzing White House travel,” explains the Post. Meanwhile, a Judicial Watch report from December put Obama’s total travel costs over eight years at just under $97 million.

The costs of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago trips include enlisting the Coast Guard to patrol the exposed shoreline, and other security, military, and staffing expenses incurred by moving Trump and his presidential apparatus to the so-called winter White House. This, presumably, is why most presidents content themselves with one year-round White House.

Another estimated $1.3 million was spent on Secret Service protection for Trump’s sons Eric and Donald Jr. during overseas business trips. That brings the month’s total to an estimated $11.3 million, just short of the $12.1 million average that Obama spent on travel in a year.

The Trump International Hotel received at least $259,724 on a visit by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and other officials in September 2017 while the U.S. Justice Department was investigating his role in a money laundering scandal, according to a statement released by the Democratic-led House Oversight Committee.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates spent at least $164,929 that same year and in 2018 for hotel stays while trying to win over support after their blockade of Qatar, according to the committee, citing documents from former Trump accountants Mazars USA. For its part, Qatar spent more than $300,000 at the hotel.

The heavy foreign government spending at Donald Trumps hotel, since sold to a Miami-based investment firm, has been reported before but details and the timing of this snapshot of payments are new. Two days after a March 2018 stay by the Saudis, the committee noted, then-president Trump approved $1.3 billion in arms sales to the country.

Former President Donald Trumps frequent visits to his New Jersey golf resort during his tenure in the White House cost taxpayers more than $2 millionwith Trump spending a total of 99 days at the Bedminster club while serving as commander in chief.

NJ.com reported on Saturday that the bill to taxpayers for Trumps frequent visits to the Bedminster golf club totaled north of $2.4 million. Trump regularly frequented the club as an escape from the White House, with the number of his visits to the New Jersey property only coming in behind his trips to his residence at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

The news site obtained the information through a Freedom of Information Act request.

The vast majority of the sizable sum went to cover the costs of Secret Service agents hotels in the nearby area, with that total coming in at some $1.9 million. The Secret Service spent more than $35,000 on rooms at Trumps Bedminister property.

The NJ.com report also noted that the $2.4 million figure does not include the price of Air Force One, which reportedly costs about $142,000 per hour to fly.

A February 2019 report from the Government Accountability Office, a congressional watchdog, said that Trumps frequent trips to his Mar-a-Lago resort cost taxpayers even more. That report showed that four trips to the Florida property early in Trumps presidency cost a combined $13.6 millionor about $3.4 million each.

Secret Service personnel traveling with President Trump to his private luxury properties in Palm Beach, Fla., and Bedminster, N.J., pay rates as high at $650 per night for lodging, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post.

The Post investigation tallied the amount of taxpayer dollars spent in Trumps properties and found that the Secret Service spent $159,000 at Trumps D.C. hotel in his first year alone. In the presidents out-of-state properties, the Trump company is recorded as charging as much as $17,000 per month for rent.

The newspaper noted that after a thorough search of rentals in the area for comparable homes, the average cost for rent was $3,400.

Trump previously told The Hill in 2015 that he would rarely leave the White House because theres so much work to be done, but currently he often visits his properties in Florida and New Jersey, Secret Service in tow.

In an October interview with Yahoo News, Eric Trump, the executive vice president of The Trump Organization, answered questions about the presidents decision to host the 2020 Group of Seven summit at the presidents golf club, Trump National Doral Miami in Florida.

The Posts report comes just hours before an appeals court ruled that Democrats cannot sue President Trump over emoluments claims.

Trump Bills Secret Service $40000 At Mar

Records obtained by Washington Post show agency paid $396.15 every night since 20 January until at least 30 April

Donald Trump has billed the Secret Service more than $40,000 for a room for his own security detail, which has been guarding him at his Mar-a-Lago resort since he left office in January.

Spending records obtained by the Washington Post through a public records request show that Trumps resort in Palm Beach charged the Secret Service $396.15 every night starting on 20 January, the day he left the White House and relocated to Mar-a-Lago full-time.

The charges continued until at least 30 April, costing taxpayers a total of $40,011.15. A source familiar with the transactions told the Post the charges were for a single room that functioned as a workspace for Secret Service agents.

Compared with protection provided at Mar-a-Lago during Trumps tenure as president, Secret Service agents rented fewer rooms during their stay this year. The agency would previously rent four to five rooms for every night Trump was there. His security detail only rented out one room this spring.

As vice-president, Joe Biden charged the Secret Service $171,600 in rent for use of a cottage on his Delaware property between 2011 and 2017. Since becoming president, Biden has not charged the Secret Service rent.
