How Many Counties Did Trump Win In 2016

Don't Miss

Areas Hit Hard Economically Stuck With Trump

Trump Wins Florida, Clinton Wins Washington | 2016 Election Results

The rising numbers of coronavirus cases, hospitalizations and covid-19 deaths, as well as Trumpâs management of the virus crisis, was a main theme of the Biden campaign. Counties that since the start of the pandemic have reported the most cases of the disease, on a population basis, are scattered mostly from Florida to Texas and up to the Dakotas and include many smaller counties. Trump won them overall four years ago by a large margin. Although virus concerns may have hurt Trump elsewhere, his margins here are wider.

Counties with the lowest coronavirus case rates are arrayed in a far different geographic pattern, concentrated around the upper Northeast, Colorado and Oregon. They also tend to have smaller populations, and Trump is winning again there, although by less.

Democrats Gained In Nearly Every Battleground State Running Up Margins In Cities

See how your county swung over the past three elections

Joe Biden flipped several battleground states en route to winning the presidency, thanks to a surge of support in heavily populated parts of the country. While President Trump did improve in some areas, it wasnât enough to offset the former vice presidentâs gains.

We are tracking how winning margins have shifted throughout the U.S. Select a county below to see how it voted in the 2012, 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.

Vote margin shift by county

The nationâs major cities, often objects of Trumpâs scorn, turned away from him. Across the counties home to those cities and suburbs, Bidenâs lead is already millions more than Hillary Clintonâs was four years ago, and is growing as final ballots are counted.

The large part of Bidenâs big urban gain is coming from center-city areas, those dozens of counties at the core of metropolitan areas with populations of more than 1 million â places such as Michiganâs Wayne County, home to Detroit, and Milwaukee County in Wisconsin, where Democratic margins grew by tens of thousands of votes and helped flip the states for Biden.

Although Trump has strengthened his already wide margins in rural counties by less than one percentage point, those gains often donât make up for shifts in more-populated areas.

Philadelphia A Mixed Picture

If we had told Democrats that Biden would get more votes in Philadelphia than Barack Obama did in 2008, they would have done back flips up the Art Museum steps.

And that happened: Biden got 603,790 votes from the city, surpassing the 595,980 Obama won in what was then a landslide. Thats remarkable considering the historic nature of Obamas candidacy and the pandemic, which this year hampered campaigning and disrupted so many lives.

Yet despite his gains, Philadelphia actually provided fewer net votes for Biden than for any Democrat since John Kerry in 2004.

Biden got about 3% more Philadelphia votes than Clinton in 2016. Trump increased his city total by 22%.

Overall, Biden won the city by 471,050 votes, or 4,227 fewer than Clinton did. Trumps improvement was his largest gain in net votes in any county.

Biden, lets not forget, set an all-time record for the number of votes won in the city. However, it does stand out as the one place where Trump really did boost his vote share in a large county, said David Wasserman, an elections analyst at the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.

As expected, Trump did well in the citys more conservative areas, such as parts of the Northeast and South Philly, but Wasserman said his performance also speaks to the larger Hispanic surge for Trump, which played out on a smaller scale in Philadelphia.

Pivot Counties: The Counties That Voted Obama

2020 presidential election

President Donald Trump won 2,626 counties nationwide, while Hillary Clinton won 487 counties. Of the 2,626 counties Trump won, Ballotpedia identified 206 counties that voted for Trump in 2016 after voting for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. Collectively, Trump won these Pivot Counties by more than 580,000 votes, and had an average margin of victory of 11.45 percent. These counties are sometimes referred to as swing counties by media and political observers. The political shift in these counties could have a broad impact on elections at every level of government.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The 206 counties are located in 34 states. Iowa, with 31, had the most such counties. The state with the highest percentage of Pivot Counties was Maine, where Pivot Counties made up 50 percent of the state’s total counties.
  • These 206 counties cast 7.5 million votes in 2016, which accounts for 5.5 percent of all votes cast in the election.
  • Between 2012 and 2016, the Democratic popular vote margin declined by 2.1 million votes. Even though these 206 counties make up only 5 percent of the total votes cast, they accounted for 51 percent of that decline.
  • Of these 206 counties, 57 of them voted for the eventual winner in each presidential election dating back to 2000.
  • The following map displays the Pivot Counties that voted for Obama, Obama, and Trump:

Among this years presidential battleground states are four that Trump won by extremely slim margins in 2016.

Donald Trump made history in 2016 by becoming the fifth United States presidential candidate to win the Electoral College but lose the overall popular vote. It worked out that way because opponent Hillary Clinton had some extremely large victories in heavily-populated states like California and New York, and Trump wound up winning four states with margins of victory of 1.2 percentage points or less.

As Election Day 2020 approaches, many of these states continue to be battlegrounds between Trump and Democrat Joe Biden.

Below are the states Trump won by a slim margin, beginning with the slimmest:

The Trump era made us rethink a lot about politics and elections in America, including the counties that are useful barometers of the national political environment. And like so many electoral trends, demographics play a major role in explaining why these once-bellwether counties finally missed the mark in 2020.

These former bellwether counties are much whiter and less college-educated than the country as a whole. For instance, Washington County, Maine the median bellwether county in terms of its share thats non-Hispanic white is 89 percent non-Hispanic white, which is much higher than the overall U.S. population that identifies as such . It is also not as educated: Just 22 percent of adults 25 or older have a bachelors degree or higher, which is substantially lower than the 32 percent who have a college degree nationwide.

But its not just demographic trends driving the loss of bellwether status. Increased political polarization is another reason why fewer counties are consistently indicative of presidential results in recent years. In fact, according to David Wasserman of The Cook Political Report, just 303 counties were decided by single-digit margins in 2016, compared to 1,096 counties that fit that description in 1992. The fact that there are fewer swing counties means that there are fewer potential bellwether counties.

Table : States With Stronger Declines In Democratic

A few of these declining states for Democrats are blue states. Two of them Illinois and New York have a dominant and strongly Democratic urban center along with an outstate region that has been drifting away from the party.

But at least 9 are solidly red states, or almost half of the 21 states in the declining category. They include some of the strongest numerical declines in Democratic counties of any state. For instance, between 2000 and 2020, the number of Democratic counties declined from 32 to 8 in Arkansas, 15 to 2 in Kentucky, 36 to 3 in Tennessee, and 13 to 0 in West Virginia.

The declines were even more massive if you compare 2008 the year of Obamas first election victory with 2020. Obama won his home state of Illinois with 46 counties in 2008, but Biden won just 14. Obama won 53 counties in Iowa, but Biden won just 6. Obama won 47 counties in Michigan, but Biden won just 11. Obama won 22 counties in Ohio, whereas Biden won just 7. And Obama won 59 counties in Wisconsin, compared to just 14 for Biden.

The Georgia trend is somewhat similar to the final state, Texas, which weve put in its own category. In Texas, the Obama bump held on through 2016, before declining in 2020 even though Biden came much closer to winning the state than Obama ever did.

Hillary Clinton Only Won Nine Of Minnesota’s 87 Counties In 2016 But They Were Big Enough To Give Her The State

Election 2016: Donald Trump wins Florida

MINNESOTA Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is hoping he can continue his party’s streak of winning Minnesota, which dates back to 1972. In 2016, Donald Trump came within 45,000 votes or less than two percentage points of winning the state.

Hillary Clinton only won nine of Minnesota’s 87 counties in 2016, but they were big enough to give her the state. However, by the time Minnesota was called for Clinton, most analysts had already projected a Trump victory.

    Land Doesn’t Vote People Do

There are far more people in some counties than in others, and the key to a candidate’s victory is the margin of votes they win by in each state. Although some ballots are still being counted, Biden has won the popular vote by at least 4.4 million votes.

The map below shows circles sized according to the number of votes separating the candidates in each county, colored red or blue depending on the candidate who won there. Trump won by small numbers of votes in many counties, while Biden won by much larger vote margins in fewer counties.

The Growing Concentration Of The Democratic Vote

One of the inexorable political trends of recent years has been the declining number of counties won by Democrats. Put simply, Democrats, particularly at the presidential level, are maintaining or increasing their electoral strength in populated areas, whether urban and suburban, as Republicans strengthen their hold on more rural areas.

During the era of President Donald Trump, Republicans have made gains even in those less-populated areas where Democrats once had a chance of winning from the small towns of Iowa and Wisconsin to the coalfields of eastern Kentucky and West Virginia to the industrial areas of northeastern Ohio.

While Joe Biden won marginally more of the nations more than 3,100 counties than Hillary Clinton did 4 years earlier, it was still a smaller number than was won by every other Democratic presidential candidate this century . Election Night And The Next Day

The news media and election experts were surprised at Trump’s winning the Electoral College. On the eve of the vote, spread betting firm Spreadex had Clinton at an Electoral College spread of 307322 against Trump’s 216231. The final polls showed a lead by Clinton and in the end she did receive more votes. Trump himself expected, based on polling, to lose the election, and rented a small hotel ballroom to make a brief concession speech, later remarking: “I said if we’re going to lose I don’t want a big ballroom.” Trump performed surprisingly well in all battleground states, especially Florida, Iowa, Ohio, and North Carolina. Even Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, states that had been predicted to vote Democratic, were won by Trump.Cindy Adams reported that “Trumptown knew they’d won by 5:30. Math, calculations, candidate dislike causing voter abstention begat the numbers.”

After networks called Pennsylvania for Trump, putting him with 264 electoral votes while he had a five-point lead in Arizona, which gives eleven electoral votes that would put Trump above the majority of 270, Clinton realized she had no chance to win the election and called Trump early Wednesday morning to concede defeat. Clinton was unable to make a public concession that night, as she had no concession speech written.

The 2016 United States presidential election was the 58th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. The Republican ticket of businessman Donald Trump and Indiana governor Mike Pence defeated the Democratic ticket of former secretary of stateHillary Clinton and the United States senator from Virginia Tim Kaine, in what was considered one of the greatest upsets in American history. Trump took office as the 45th president, and Pence as the 48th vice president, on January 20, 2017. It was the fifth and most recent presidential election in which the winning candidate lost the popular vote. It was also the sixth and most recent presidential election in which both major party candidates were registered in the same home state, with the others being in 1860, 1904, 1920, 1940, and 1944.

    Involvement Of Other Countries

On December 9, 2016, the Central Intelligence Agency issued an assessment to lawmakers in the US Senate, stating that a Russian entity hacked the DNC and John Podesta‘s emails to assist Donald Trump. The Federal Bureau of Investigation agreed. President Barack Obama ordered a “full review” into such possible intervention. Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper in early January 2017 testified before a Senate committee that Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential campaign went beyond hacking, and included disinformation and the dissemination of fake news, often promoted on social media. Facebook revealed that during the 2016 United States presidential election, a Russian company funded by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a Russian businessman with ties to Vladimir Putin, had purchased advertisements on the website for US$100,000, 25% of which were geographically targeted to the U.S.

President-elect Trump originally called the report fabricated. said the Russian government was not the source of the documents. Days later, Trump said he could be convinced of the Russian hacking “if there is a unified presentation of evidence from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other agencies.”

Pennsylvania 2020 Election: Why This Ex-Trump Voter Backs Biden

Donald Trump is the most popular Republican candidate in history bringing in over 62.4 million votes during the 2016 presidential election. He also secured victories in at least 83 percent of the counties in the United States. Trump is also ranked the third most popular presidential candidate in history. However, there is one huge difference in Trumps popular vote win and that of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Trump is the only popular vote candidate in the top three to receive success in more than 25 percent of the county-level vote, a victory that has all but been overlooked in the media due to the popular vote margin and recount initiatives.

Both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton received their substantial popular vote tally while receiving an all-time low percentage of U.S. counties. Barack Obama set the record for the lowest number of counties won for a successful presidential candidate.

President Obama established an all-time low percentage of U.S. counties for a successful presidential candidate: just 689 of more than 3,000, or a paltry 22%.

NBC News notes that Barack Obama won with less than a 25 percent victory rate across all of the U.S. counties, scrapping in with a county victory rate of just 22 percent. Should Hillary Clinton have won the race based on popular vote alone, she would have beat Obamas record of an all-time low with just a 15-17 percent success rate of the county-level vote.
