Reasons Why So Many People Still Support Trump
“This administration isn’t just targeting the laws that protect us they are targeting the very idea that we are all worthy of protection.”
Its incomprehensible to many of us that people could support a president who, in Bernie Sanders words, is compulsively dishonest, who is a bully, who actively represents the interests of the billionaire class, who is anti-science, and who is trying to divide us up based on the color of our skin, our nation of origin, our religion, our gender, or our sexual orientation.
Based on various trusted sources and a dab of cognitive science, its fair to conclude that there are three main reasons for this unlikely phenomenon.
1. Trumps followers believe theyre better than other people
Nationalism, exceptionalism, narcissism, racism. Theyre all part of the big picture, although its unfair to simply dismiss Trump people as ignorant racists. Many of them are well-educated and wealthy. But well-to-do individuals tend to feel entitled, superior, uninterested in the people beneath them, and less willing to support the needs of society. Thus many wealthy white Americans are just fine with Trumps disdain for the general population.
Poorer whites also feel superior, in the sense that theyre reluctant to give up their long-time self-assigned position at the top of the racial hierarchy.
2. Theyre driven by hatred for their perceived enemies
3. They refuse to admit they were wrong

The measure is of note after the Mar-a-Lago raid, thought to be connected to government documents.
A bill that Donald Trump signed into law in 2018 could be used to punish the former president if he’s found to have mishandled classified information after leaving office.
FBI agents on Monday raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, apparently as part on an investigation into whether Trump wrongly kept hold of classified material after he left office.
Bradley P. Moss, a national security attorney, told Insider that Trump could face five years in prison if he’s found guilty under a national security bill that he signed as president.
Trump signed the bill, which made changes to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, into law in January 2018.
It upgraded the seriousness of wrongly moving classified material, turning it from a misdemeanor into a felony and increasing the maximum sentence to five years, up from one.
Moss noted that it was passed after Trump’s relentless attacks during the 2016 presidential campaign on Hillary Clinton, who was being investigated over whether she mishandled classified information.
Clinton was never charged in that case, but it is now Trump who is under pressure.

In fact, three days can claim to be the first day of fall. Meteorological autumn begins on September 1. Many people regard Labor Day, which is on September 5 this year, to be the final day of summer. We also have the astronomical equinox on September 22 this year.
So just when does fall begin? Well, a CBS News poll from 2017 found that 67% of Americans said Labor Day best represented the end of summer to them. Just 27% said the equinox, when asked to choose between the two days.

How Are His Approval Ratings
Despite a bitter presidential race, Mr Biden began his term with 56% of the country approving of his performance, according to RealClearPolitics, and having won more than 80 million votes – more than any other president.
But in his first year, he has had a startling slide in fortunes.
His star began to fall at the time of a widely criticised withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan and as the Delta variant advanced.
Since then, his approval ratings have fallen further as he has struggled to deliver on his biggest campaign promises to tame the pandemic and restore prosperity for working families.
Compared with other recent presidents, only Donald Trump has had a more disappointing first year – his approval rating fell from 45% on his inauguration day to 35% a year later, according to historical trends by Gallup.
Mr Biden’s former boss, Barack Obama, began at a high of nearly 70% when he took office and ended close to 50% a year later. George W Bush began his first term in a similar position to Mr Biden, with approval around 60%, but that rose to nearly 90% after 9/11.

His ratings started modestly positive, without the kind of big inaugural bump most presidents receive. Now his numbers are in the danger zone for first-term presidents hoping to win re-election – a reflection of near universal Republican dislike and a majority of independents who are souring on him.

In the final measure of Donald Trump’s job approval as President of the United States, voters give him a negative approval rating for the way he’s handling his job as president, 34 – 61 percent. This is essentially unchanged from a week ago, when he received a negative 33 – 60 percent approval rating, tying his all-time low. In comparison, former President Obama’s final job approval on January 10, 2017 was a positive 55 – 39 percent, one of his highest approval ratings.
In today’s poll, Republicans say 73 – 21 percent they approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president.
Just last month, Trump received one of his highest job approval ratings following the November election when voters gave him a negative 44 – 51 percent approval rating. In that December 10th poll, Republicans approved 89 – 9 percent.
“Though he has taken a hit with the base, no matter what legal issues he faces, Donald Trump can take some solace in the fact that almost three-quarters of the GOP still support him and nearly that same percentage believe the election was stolen from him,” added Malloy.
Voters are divided on whether Donald Trump represents the Republican party. Forty-nine percent say he does not, while 45 percent say he does. Sixty-nine percent of Republicans say Trump does represent the GOP.
On whether Trump should continue to play a prominent role in the Republican party after he leaves office, voters say 65 – 29 percent he should not. Republicans say 61 – 33 percent that he should.

If Trump is the partys eventual nominee, she said, I would have to do quite a bit of soul searching before voting for him in the general election.
The share of Iowa Republicans who say they feel more allegiance to Trump than to the Republican Party has fallen from 26% in November 2021 to 21% today. Seventy percent now say they feel more allegiance to the Republican Party up from 61% in 2021.
Brett Funk, a 32-year-old Sheffield resident and poll respondent, said he would like to see Trump run again, but only because he sees him as beatable.

In the days since Democrats were battered in elections across the country last week, criticism of the partys policies and electoral strategies has rained down, alongside dire forecasts of its prospects in the 2022 midterms. The flagellation has come not just from gleeful Republicans, but from many in the Democratic ranks.
Reasons put forward for the partys losses included President Bidens slipping approval in polls, impressions of a party that is incompetent at governing after months of infighting in Congress, rising inflation and crime in big cities, and tin-eared Democratic campaigns.
One of the least envied jobs in politics at the moment belongs to Representative Sean Patrick Maloney of New York, who as chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee must steer his caucus through the extremely choppy midterm waters. Mr. Bidens approval numbers are lower than President Barack Obamas were at the same point in his first term, ahead of the 2010 midterms when Democrats lost more than 60 House seats.

Conservative author Steven Hayward, a Berkeley Law lecturer and visiting scholar at Berkeleys Institute of Governmental Studies, looks to the past for a guide to the future. The late 1960s and early 70s were a time of upheaval in the U.S., he said, and the nation was shaken by assassinations, bombings, riots and campus unrest. Eventually, though, much of the fury burned itself out.
Hayward believes that many working class people embraced Trump because he seemed to understand their sense of being left behind. But like other scholars, he suggested the Biden administration will be more conventional, bringing a calm that could reduce the exhausting polarization and conflict of the Trump presidency.
Several scholars, however, suggested that Democrats hold some responsibility for the repairing the cultural divide because they helped to cause it. They have increasingly lost a sense of alliance with people in rural America and the declining industrial regions, said Berkeley sociologist Neil Fligstein, and as a result, theyre seen as distant, arrogant elites.
