Players To Watch: Patriots At Giants

Patriots.coms Mike Dussault shares his players to watch ahead of the Patriots Preseason Week 3 matchup against the New York Giants

Mac Jones, QB: After getting three-straight practices with all the starters reps, Jones now has one final preseason chance to show what hes learned this summer and state his case for the starting job. After solid appearances in his first two outings, the rookie will be looking to put an exclamation point on his preseason.

Cam Newton, QB: Things were going well for Newton after a solid performance in preseason action against the Eagles where he looked poised to be the opening day starter. Did this weeks COVID complication offset the momentum Newton was building? Is he dealing with an injury that required him seeking outside attention? Newton was solid in limited action during the final joint practice against the Giants, but there are a lot of questions around him right now, questions that could be mostly answered with a solid extended appearance.

J.J. Taylor, RB: As expected, Taylor was Mr. All Everything against the Eagles last week and now he should get plenty of touches once again vs. the Giants. His hard-charging style is sure to capture attention, but it will be in the smaller, critical areas like special teams, pass protection and special teams that determine his roster chances and role.

AT A GLANCE

Brian Daboll manned the sideline for the first time as head coach, and general manager Joe Schoen watched his inaugural roster start to come to life. Together, they won their first preseason game as a tandem. Graham Gano kicked a 24-yard field goal as time expired for a 23-21 victory over the Patriots in New England.

UP NEXT

While Thursday night marked one month to go until the regular season, the Giants return to training camp on Sunday and, along with the rest of the league, must reduce their roster to 85 players on Aug. 16. The Giants then face the Cincinnati Bengals in their second preseason game on Sunday night at MetLife Stadium. The action only picks up from there as the Giants will host a joint practice with the Jets the following week leading up to their matchup in the preseason finale. The final 53-man roster will be announced on Aug. 30.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE

*Daboll has not publicly announced who will call the team’s offensive plays when the regular season starts, but Mike Kafka, the Giants’ first-year offensive coordinator, assumed that duty throughout the offseason practices and in training camp. He also did so on Thursday night from the booth at Gillette Stadium.

*Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor saw extensive action and completed 13 of 21 passes for 129 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown to wide receiver Richie James. The two offseason additions have found each other frequently in practice this summer.

New York Giants Dates & Schedule

The New York Giants schedule includes a full preseason and regular season with a strong possibility of postseason play. The Giants kick off the year in August with four preseason exhibition games. The NFL regular season will then start in September and will take place over the span of 17 weeks with 16 games played by the Giants in that time frame. Half of these games will be home games at MetLife Stadium while the other half will take place on the road at other NFL stadiums. The team will play multiple matchups against their NFC East rivals the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins.

With over 30 playoff appearances in the NFL, the Giants are usually part of the postseason equation after Week 17. Should they qualify, the team will enter the NFL Playoffs in January and try to work their way through the single-elimination tournament to reach the Super Bowl. In addition to preseason and regular season New York Giants games, TicketSmarter will also have NFL Playoffs tickets and Super Bowl tickets available as those events draw closer.

Daniel Jones Performance Was Overshadowed By His End Zone Interception

For the most part, Daniel Jones played well completing 17 out of 22 passes for 135 yards and threw a touchdown to Kaden Smith at the end of the first half.

But he did throw a crucial interception in the end zone in the second quarter. These are the kind of mistakes that Jones should not be making in his third season. Ball security continues to be Joness biggest issue, and its something he must improve on when the regular season begins.

Stock Up: Rodarius Williams

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

With Adoree Jackson out due to a sprained ankle, Williams saw more playing time and he did not disappoint.

Williams finished his final preseason game with four tackles and prevented a touchdown.

While the Giants have a deep secondary, having Williams exceed any expectations bodes well heading into the season, especially if Jackson has any setbacks with the ankle.

Historic Patriots Vs Giants Game

Super Bowl XLII: Ruining the Perfect Season: The Patriots were the clear favorites ahead of Super Bowl XLII after the 2007 season. New England did not lose a game in the regular season or playoffs leading up to the Super Bowl. With a win, the Patriots would have earned just the second perfect season in NFL history . The Giants had a 10-6 record in the regular season and made the playoffs as a wild card team. The Patriots led late in the fourth quarter after a touchdown pass from Tom Brady to Randy Moss. The TD put the Patriots up by four. The Giants next drive became one of the most famous in the history of the Super Bowl. On a play that looked like it would end in a sack, Eli Manning scrambled and lobbed a pass down the field. Giants receiver David Tyree made what is known now as the Helmet Catch. He made a leaping grab for the football and brought it down against his helmet for the catch. The play set up a game winning touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress. The Giants win is one of the biggest upsets in all of pro sports.
