How Electoral Votes Are Awarded

In all states except Nebraska and Maine, electors are awarded on a winner-take-all basis. This means all electors/delegates in a state are awarded to the winner of the popular vote in that state. So in a closely contested election like 2000 , when George Bush won Florida with a roughly 50-50% split of the popular vote in that state, he won all 27 electoral votes for Florida.

Maine and Nebraska use a slightly different method for allocating electoral votes. In the “Congressional District Method”, one elector within each congressional district is selected by popular vote in that district. The remaining two electors are selected by the statewide popular vote. This method has been used in Nebraska since 1996 and in Maine since 1972.

Implications Of A Popular Vote Election

It would be wrong to assume that Hillary Clinton or Al Gore would have been president had the electoral college been abolished and elections were to be decided by popular vote. Indeed, Donald Trump has said he supports a popular vote election for president, and has reiterated this view even after winning the electoral college vote and losing the popular vote.

As Aaron Blake argued when he wrote for the Washington Post, the electoral college forces candidates to structure their campaign in a specific way they focus on about a dozen “purple” or swing states such as Florida, Ohio, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Virginia, Iowa and New Hampshire. Republicans waste no resources campaigning in decidedly blue states like Washington, Oregon and California, while Democrats avoid campaigning in red states like Texas, Georgia and Oklahoma.

If elections were decided by popular vote, campaign strategies would be very different. If Trump had campaigned more effectively in California, for example, his popular vote deficit in that state would possibly not have been as large as it was. Clinton got 4.3 million more votes than Trump in California. In other words, if the state of California were excluded, Trump would win the popular vote by 1.5 million votes. Supporters of the electoral college system say that this was exactly the kind of scenarioi.e., one large state overriding the wishes of other statesthat the current system was designed to handle.

MONTANA- Late Saturday night former president Donald Trump hosted one of his first rallies since leaving office, on stage the former president questioned the validity of the treasure states 2020 election.

“In Montana, over 6% of a certain county’s mail-in ballots are missing evidence to prove that they were legitimate or not. They are missing all this evidence. Think of it, Montana, a lot of mail-in ballots. Where do you have the mail-in ballots, by the way?”- the former president said on stage.

There is potential the former president could be referring to State Representative Brad Tschida’s claims that ballots that were missing affirmation envelopes and were counted, the Missoula commission sent a letter to Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen dismissing the claims.

The letter reads:

It should be noted there is a difference between an accusation of “missing ballots,” and ballots that cannot be counted due to a voter not sending in the ballot with the correct information if a ballot is missing the affirmation envelope and barcode it can’t be counted.

Gaetz, McCarthy’s staunchest opponent, dramatically denied McCarthy the final vote he needed to become speaker — then Gaetz and the last holdouts abruptly changed course allowing McCarthy to win the speaker’s gavel on his 15th attempt.

Before the final vote, pandemonium erupted on the House floor after Gaetz waited until the very end of the 14th ballot to vote “present” when McCarthy needed one more “yes” vote. Stunned after believing he had the votes, McCarthy faced his most embarrassing defeat yet. McCarthy’s allies encircled Gaetz to try to find a way forward. McCarthy soon made a bee-line for discussion and started engaging Gaetz, too.

Nearby, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia was trying to convince Rep. Matt Rosendale of Montana, another McCarthy holdout, to take her cell phone and speak to former President Donald Trump, who was on the line.

Montana Leaders Respond To Trump Impeachment Inquiries

A growing number of Democratic Party leaders began calling for impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump Tuesday, over allegations related to a whistleblower complaint from a member of the U.S. intelligence community. Some reports have suggested Trump may have put pressure on the government of Ukraine to investigate the son of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. On Tuesday afternoon, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced she would direct six House committees to proceed with investigations into the presidents actions under the umbrella of an impeachment inquiry.

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock had been among the Democrats calling for possible impeachment hearings Tuesday morning. In a statement released by his presidential campaign, Bullock pointed to what he called disturbing allegations about the presidents actions with Ukrainian leaders. After Pelosis announcement, the campaign sent out an updated statement.

“If the President of the United States used the power of his office to extort a foreign leader into investigating a political opponent, Congress has a responsibility to get answers,” said Bullock. “If the President abused his office and jeopardized American national security for his own personal gain, then the House needs to impeach him. At some point, this is bigger than Donald Trump this is about a 243-year experiment called representative Democracy.”

If no presidential candidate gets 270 electoral votes, the decision moves to the House of Representatives, which would hold what’s called a contingent election in which each state gets a single vote. Judge Rules Against Trump Upholding Montanas Vote By Mail

U.S. District Judge Dana Christensen found that Governor Steve Bullock, a Democrat, was within his authority to allow the states counties to use a mail ballot system to avoid the risk of transmitting COVID-19 at polling places.

The Trump campaign was among a number of plaintiffs that challenged the governors move.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Voting by mail has become a flashpoint in the Nov. 3 election, with the Republican president making unfounded complaints that the process leads to widespread election fraud, a point he reasserted in Tuesdays debate with Democratic challenger Joe Biden.

The evidence suggests, however, that this allegation, specifically in Montana, is a fiction, wrote Christensen, who was nominated by former Democratic President Barack Obama.

The judge also noted that Montana used mail voting in its June primary and had a record voter turnout without evidence of fraud.

Trumps lawsuits described the governors directive that allows a ballot to be sent to every voter as a brazen power grab.

Polls show Montana to be leaning for Trump in the presidential election, but Bullock is running a tight race for the U.S. Senate against Republican incumbent Steve Daines.

Voters will also be selecting a new governor in November.

‘we’re Making Some Progress’

On Wednesday evening, McCarthy agreed to several key concessions to try to flip at least some of his opponents.

McCarthy had been in talks with Roy, who told GOP leaders he thought he could get 10 holdouts to come along with him. McCarthy also met separately Wednesday evening with freshman members who voted against him.

In perhaps the biggest concession, McCarthy agreed to allow just one member to call for a vote to oust a sitting speaker. McCarthy had initially proposed a five-member threshold, down from current conference rules that require half of the GOP to call for such a vote.

McCarthy also pledged to allow more members of the Freedom Caucus to serve on the Rules Committee and to hold votes for bills that were priorities for the holdouts, including on border security and term limits.

In another sign of a breakthrough, a McCarthy-aligned super PAC, the Congressional Leadership Fund, agreed to not get involved in open primaries in safe seats — one of the demands conservatives had asked for but McCarthy had resisted.

“I think we’re making progress,” McCarthy said Thursday morning as he arrived at the Capitol for a third day of votes.

The GOP dissidents also sounded a positive note. “We’re making some progress,” Bishop told CNN as he was walking into a meeting Thursday morning with other GOP hardliners.

‘it’s Embarrassing For The Country’

When the House gaveled back into session Wednesday, McCarthy lacked the votes to adjourn the session, as some of his allies had wanted in order to keep negotiating. So McCarthy headed toward a fourth ballot.

Jordan urged McCarthy’s opponents not to nominate him again. Instead, Rep. Chip Roy of Texas stood instead to nominate Donalds — the very Republican who had defected the day prior.

While the McCarthy opponents did not grow their ranks — a sigh of relief for McCarthy — the California Republican still lost one vote: Rep. Victoria Spartz, an Indiana Republican, who voted present. Spartz told reporters her vote was intended to encourage the two sides to get back to the negotiating table.

There were other signs that some of McCarthy’s backers weren’t willing to stick by him forever. Rep. Ken Buck, a Colorado Republican and House Freedom Caucus member, told CNN that “at some point” McCarthy needed to step aside and let now-Majority Leader Steve Scalise run. “What I’ve asked is that if Kevin can’t get there, that he step aside and give Steve a chance to do it,” Buck said.

The atmosphere on the House floor on Wednesday was buzzing by the second vote. While Tuesday’s session was relatively calm, the opposing factions gathered on the floor to hold talks in real time in between the speaker votes.

“It’s embarrassing for the country,” Biden said of the House chaos.

Trump Takes Credit For Mccarthys Win: Did Our Country A Big Favor

Former President Donald Trump is claiming credit for the election of House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy as the new speaker of the House of Representatives after 15 tumultuous rounds of voting.

In his Truth Social platform, Trump said he did our country a big favor after he urged House Republicans to vote for McCarthy.

The Fake News Media was, believe it or not, very gracious in their reporting that I greatly helped Kevin McCarthy attain the position of Speaker of the House, Trump wrote. Thank you, I did our Country a big favor!

Trump reportedly made potentially critical phone calls to anti-McCarthy holdouts on Friday night, following McCarthys loss in the 14th round of voting. At the time, he got 215 votes, one vote away from clinching the speakership.

The New York Times reported that the former president called staunch anti-McCarthy holdout Florida Representative Matt Gaetz, who previously torpedoed McCarthys chances of winning the speakership.

Two anonymous people familiar with the matter told the New York Times that Trumps call may have pushed Gaetz to continue with another round of voting.

Trump also called Arizona Representative Andy Biggs, another Republican Party lawmaker opposing McCarthys candidacy, according to Fake News CNN.

McCarthy thanked Trump for helping him secure the speakership, saying the former president was with him from the beginning, The Hill reported.
