How Can An Individual Participate In The Political Process

The citizens of a country participate in the political process in various ways. From the discussion on the roles that political parties play, it becomes clear that these units of participation cannot be operative without human factors driving it. Getting citizens to participate in the political process help to enhance the quality of the process.

One primary way that the citizens of a country participate in the political process is through the election of their leaders. Using the power of voting, citizens can determine the outcome of political activities in the country. Not only can they vote for their preferred candidate, but they can also participate in soliciting votes for their preferred candidate and join political campaigns.

The political parties are essential in developing policies that govern the affairs of the country. Thus, individuals can participate in the process of policy formulation by joining political parties and actively participating in its activities in a bid to shape and strengthen the quality of policies that the government formulates.

When the citizens want to upturn specific policies of the government, they have the power to sign petitions as a way of expressing their disapproval and advocate for a change in the status quo. It is their power to influence the decisions and actions of the government.

So How Does That Compare

Voters who live in states with closed primaries are required to register with a political party in order to vote in that partys primary. If you wanted to vote in the Republican primary in New York, you have to register as a Republican. Oftentimes, third-party voters are locked out of the Republican and Democratic primaries. But some states, like Oklahoma, are a bit of a hybrid and let independent voters choose which primaries they want to participate in.

Rep Sean Casten Tops Rep Marie Newman In Redrawn 3rd District

U.S. Rep. Sean Casten won the Democratic primary for the redrawn 6th Congressional District Tuesday evening.

Casten fended off a challenge from Rep. Marie Newman who now represents the 3rd Illinois Congressional District, but instead ran in the 6th after the 3rd was redrawn.

Casten won 63 percent of the vote compared with 33 percent for Newman, and 4 percent for Charles Hughes.

Casten essentially stopped campaigning after the death of his 17-year-old daughter, Gwen, earlier this month. He did not have a victory party, but he did release a statement reading in part:

“In the conversations I had with folks across the district, I found that we have a shared set of values, and voters wanted someone in Congress who would not only stand up and fight for those values, but live up to them. The 6th District is full of people who trust science, believe in democracy, and know that we are only as good as the world we leave to our children.

“We flipped the 6th District in 2018 because of the hard work of the thousands of volunteers who knocked on doors, made phone calls, and did everything they could to show the country what the values of the 6th District truly were. Then, in 2020, we rejected racism and bigotry and chose science, compassion, decency, acceptance, and love.

One of several bills retained by House Election Law Committee for more work would implement provisional ballots for those without proof of domicile

VOTING BILLS RETAINED. A group of bills whose Republican supporters say are aimed at ensuring that only Granite State residents are eligible to vote in the state were pulled back and retained Wednesday by the GOP majority on the influential House Election Law Committee.

The committee will ostensibly work on the bills in the coming months, make changes and consider them again either later this year or early in 2022. At that point they would then go to the full House for votes.

The Democratic committee minority voted against retaining the bills, preferring to kill them outright, calling the GOP push an effort to disenfranchise and depress college students turnout at elections. But the GOP majority prevailed in a series of 11-9 party line votes, keeping the bills alive.

Among the retained bills was a measure proposed by state Rep. Robert Lynn, a retired state Supreme Court chief justice, to implement provisional ballots in New Hampshire.

Under current law, voters who are unable to show required identification when registering or voting must fill out an affidavit swearing that they are qualified and have 30 days to provide proof that they are domiciled where they say they are.

Primary elections

While primary elections are meant to give registered Democrats and Republicans a chance to say who will appear on the ballot in November, New Jerseys more than 2.4 million unaffiliated voters can have a say in the process.

The deadline to change from Republican to Democrat or from Democrat to Republican ahead of the primary elections has already passed. But unaffiliated voters are exempt from it and can cast a ballot in either the Democratic or Republican primaries on Tuesday.

Heres how it works:

An unaffiliated voter can walk into their polling station Tuesday and request a Republican or Democratic ballot and then cast their vote.

But theres a caveat.

That person is then registered under that party affiliation.

That means if you vote in the Democratic primary, youre now a registered Democrat. If you vote in the Republican primary, youre now a registered Republican.

But an unaffiliated voter who declares a party by voting in the primary can return to their unaffiliated status after the primary by re-registering as an unaffiliated voter, according to the states Division of Elections.

New Jerseyans can check whether theyre registered to vote at the Department of States Division of Elections website. If voters want to look up their party affiliation, they can create a free online account with the Division of Elections that allows them to access their detailed voting information.

When Is The Primary Election In Illinois

This year, Illinois primary election will be held on Tuesday, June 28.

Typically held in March ahead of a general election, lawmakers passed a measure last year to postpone the primary election by roughly three months as they awaited the release of detailed U.S. Census data. That data, collected in 2020, was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic but is essential to the process of redrawing district maps thats completed every 10 years following the Census.

With Republican turnout far outpacing that of the Democrats so far in the 2022 primaries, different views are being offered as to why this is happening. Yahoo News, for example, is arguing that, at least in part, this is due to Democrats voting in Republican primaries to vote against Trump-backed Republicans in those primaries.

Perhaps.

In Georgia, for example, incumbent Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, was on the receiving end of the hostility of former President Donald Trump, due to what Trump and many of his supporters believe was a failure on the part of Raffensperger to oppose Democrats in that state from committing widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

While the Democrats now hold the White House, the House of Representatives, and the U.S. Senate , Republicans actually gained seats in the 2020 election, and President Trump received millions more votes in 2020 than he garnered in 2016.

Pm: What To Watch For In Davis

Robin Johnson, a political science lecturer and public policy consultant at Monmouth College, said he was paying particular attention to results of the U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis-U.S. Rep. Mary Miller race in Adams County, in far western Illinois.

Johnson is wonder if former President Donald Trump’s turnout at a rally for Miller in Mendon on Saturday will help move the numbers.

“That’ll be an interesting number to look at,” said Johnson, in lives rural Warren County, which is newly drawn to the 15th Congressional District.

That district now includes 35 counties, ping-ponging from the Metro East area to Iowa to the Indiana border.

Miller currently represents the 15th district but her Coles County home was actually drawn out the district. Davis, who is from Taylorville, has represented the 13th district for five terms.

“They both have part of the district which they previously represented which they should do well in,” Johnson said. “It’s the new areas that are up for grabs. We’ll see. Trump will take credit, I’m sure, if wins, but a lot of the data will tell the tale.”

How Do You Choose

Illinois primary election: Republicans face off for attorney general

When you show up to your polling location, youll decide whether you want a Democratic or Republican primary ballot.

But after choosing a side in the primary, you have to stay in that lane through the runoff. You cant vote Republican in the primary election and then participate in a runoff election between top Democratic candidates.

That said, voting in a primary does not commit you to vote for a particular candidate in the general election. You can vote for either partys candidate in the November election.

Can A Democrat Vote For A Republican

The Democratic Party and the Republican Party are the two major parties in America. Before the general election takes place, there is a process called the primary election. The primary election is how registered voters determine the candidate for the nomination of each political party for the general election. The general election is the election that determines who becomes the President of America.

The question is, can a democrat vote for a republican?

In answering the question on whether a democrat can vote for a republican, it is essential to note that the answer depends on the type of election in question. For closed primary elections, only persons that register as members of a particular party can vote, and in such a situation, they must vote for their party candidate. For an open primary election, the voters can vote for any party without declaring their affiliation to a political party.

Who Gets A Say

Some say the stricter primary systems restrict whose voice can be part of the democratic process and are therefore undemocratic. Parties can block who participates in primaries, or systems force voters to publicly identify with a party.

But Laurel Harbridge-Yong, associate professor of political science at Northwestern University, says the argument for limiting voting to party members makes sense those who align with a party should get to choose the issues and candidates who represent them.

To people who study political parties Its actually quite shocking to think that you would even have something like open primaries, Harbridge-Yong says. Taken in a different context, the question would be, Why should someone whos not a Methodist be able to help pick the priest at a Methodist congregation? Of course, it would be the people that are part of that denomination or that group who are the ones that are selecting their leader.

In June, the BGA Policy team had John Opdycke, president of Open Primaries, as a guest on the BGA podcast . Opdycke advocates for primary reform across the country, and said efforts are underway in 15 or 20 states to attempt to change primary systems.

There’s a lot of momentum, there’s a lot of activity, Opdycke said. And yet this movement is still very underdeveloped, very young and the opposition comes from both political parties.

Voters Choosing Between Sitting Incumbents In 6th Congressional District

Two incumbent members of Congress are running against each other in the 6th Congressional District Democratic primary.

As CBS 2’s Chris Tye reported, it was a hot, busy, and chippy Primary Election Day between designates for candidates of all stripes at the Orland Park Sports Complex at the southern border of the redrawn district.

From the south, the district includes Orland Park, Alsip, and Oak Lawn, and it goes as far west as parts of Wheaton up to Lombard and Elmhurst. The district used to extend north into McHenry and western Lake counties.

The two Democratic frontrunners in the race are Rep. Marie Newman who now represents the 3rd Illinois Congressional District, and Rep. Sean Casten who represents the current 6th.

There are several storylines here not the least of which is that Casten has essentially stopped campaigning since the death of his 17-year-old daughter, Gwen, earlier this month. He is not having a victory party if he wins.

Former Illinois Gop Chair: Richard Irvin’s Campaign Was Mishandled By Consultants

Illinois primary election: Republicans vying for secretary of state

Former Illinois Republican Party Chair Pat Brady said Tuesday evening that Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin’s gubernatorial campaign was handled poorly.

Irvin lost Tuesday night to Illinois state Sen. Darren Bailey pulling ahead in the Republican primary for governor.

Brady said Illinois GOP powerbrokers “wholesale adopted” Irvin and consultants “shoved down Republicans’ throats.”

“They just picked this guy, anointed him, and everybody was supposed to buy into it,” he said.

Brady characterized Irvin as “a guy that consultants could control,” and indeed, Irvin never stepped out of line from what consultants expected and even changed many of his positions compared with when he was mayor.

“This was the biggest political debacle, the biggest waste of money, I’ve ever seen,” Brady said. “It was all consultant-driven.”
