After a first-round bye in the AFCplayoffs, the Patriots faced the Tennessee Titans at home in one of the coldest games in NFL history and won, setting up an AFC Championship Game matchup with the Indianapolis Colts. The top-seeded Patriots intercepted Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, the league’s co-MVP, four times, winning 2414 and advancing to Super Bowl XXXVIII against the Carolina Panthers. With a tied game late in the fourth quarter, Adam Vinatieri kicked the game-winning field goal with seconds remaining, giving the Patriots their second Super Bowl victory in three seasons.

BILLS OFFENSE VS. PATRIOTS DEFENSE

The Perfect Offensive Game

The Bills dominated the Patriots in this rivalry’s first playoff game in over 58 years, their first as NFL teams, and their first after the Boston Patriots changed their location name to New England, by a score of 4717 in the wild card round of the 202122 NFL playoffs. This went into record books as the first “Perfect Offensive Game” by any NFL team as the Bills, led by Josh Allen, scored touchdowns on every drive of the entire game without any punts, kicks, or turnovers. Allen threw more touchdowns than incomplete passes as the Bills gained 480 yards on just 51 snaps.USA Today remarked the game “served as another reminder that the Bills own the AFC East in these post-Tom Brady years”, while Patriots linebacker Matthew Judon observed that “it wasnt one drive, one play or one single player. It was everything. It was the whole game.” Bills defensive tackle Harrison Phillips opined the game’s statistics sounded “like some Pop Warner stuff.” It was Patriots’ second-worst loss of the 21st century, the three worst of which were all suffered in the BillsPatriots rivalry.

Buffalo Bills Vs New England Patriots

The rivalry between the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots is a rivalry where the power has shifted hands convincingly time and time again throughout the history of those franchises. When one team is at the top of their game, the other usually struggles to find their footing, thanks in large part to the fact that the Bills and Patriots play each other regularly during AFC East competition.

This iconic east coast football rivalry began in 1960 during the time spent by both teams in the AFL. After the AFL-NFL merger, the rivalry only intensified. Buffalo has sent all-time greats like Bruce Smith, Thurman Thomas, and Jim Kelly into games against the Patriots, while the Patriots have answered in the years since with the legendary combination of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

The teams have traded the upper hand in this rivalry in just about every decade since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, with the Bills outplaying the Patriots in their matchups in the ’70s and ’90s, while the Patriots had the better of the ’80s, and everything that has come after the year 2000.

Historic Bills Vs Patriots Games

Despite all of the meetings between the Bills and Patriots, the teams have met in the postseason just one time, with that contest taking place during the divisional round of the 1963 AFL playoffs. The Patriots won that game by a final score of 26-8, with their defense reigning supreme over their foes from Western New York.

In regular season action, the Patriots managed to dash the Bills’ playoff hopes in the 1994 NFL season, with a win in a key game with both teams separated by just one game in the standings going in. Buffalo had scored 17 of the first 20 points in that game, but were shut down to the tune of 38 unanswered points by the Patriots, who won the game by a score of 41-17.

Jim Kelly’s final season was in 1996, and he made his presence felt one last time against his heated rival by throwing a 63-yard touchdown pass to help secure the Bills the last win over the Patriots of his storied NFL career.

The 2000s saw the Patriots dominate the Bills, but Buffalo managed to pick up one of the more impressive wins over the Patriots in their history in 2003, when they shut the Patriots down to the tune of a 31-0 blowout. In a night game, this was thought to be a turning point in the rivalry, until the Patriots came back with a 31-0 win of their own later that season. The 31-0 win for the Bills was their last over the Patriots until the 2011 season.

Patriots Vs Bills Final Score Results: Josh Allen Throws 5 Tds As Buffalo Dismantles New England

The last time the Bills and Patriots met in Orchard Park, Bill Belichick and Co. came out on top in a cold, low-scoring matchup. The only similarity between then and Saturday night was the cold.

Josh Allen and the Bills caught fire in the first quarter and stayed hot all game, torching the Patriots 47-17, the most lopsided playoff defeat in the Belichick era, to advance to the AFC divisional round.

Should the Chiefs beat the Steelers on Sunday, the Bills will face off with Kansas City on the road. If Pittsburgh wins, Buffalo will host Cincinnati.

The Bills made NFL history in the first half when they became the first team in the Super Bowl era to end each of their first five drives of the game with a touchdown, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

The scoring started with Allen finding tight end Dawson Knox in the back of the end zone with a floating pass that Knox was able to haul in. Patriots quarterback Mac Jones threw an interception in the end zone on the next drive, and Allen capitalized on the turnover with another touchdown to Knox in the other end zone.

Devin Singletary rushed for two second-quarter touchdowns, and it wasnt until six seconds remained in the half that New England goton the scoreboard. A Nick Folk field goal made it 27-3 at halftime.

Original Story 1/13/: Patriots Playoff Bout With Bills Could Be One Of The Coldest Games In Franchise History

AFC Game of the Week: New England Patriots Vs. Buffalo Bills

In Week 13, it was the wind. Now, it might be the temperature that could have an impact on the New England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills.

With the two AFC East rivals set to meet in the wild card playoff round, the weather conditions at Buffalos Highmark Stadium come into focus once again. The game, after all, could go down as one of the coldest in NFL postseason history. It certainly could be one of the coldest in Patriots franchise history.

Current forecasts project a kickoff temperature of around 4 degrees at the games scheduled kickoff at 8:15 p.m. ET on Saturday.

This would tie the January 2004 divisional round matchup with the Tennessee Titans for the coldest game ever played by the Patriots. If the forecasts turn out to be accurate, the game in Buffalo also would be just the third ever single-digit kickoff in team history alongside that 2004 game and a December 1989 contest in Pittsburgh that was kicked off at 5 degrees.

The Patriots themselves are taking conditions into consideration, but the weather is no chief concern at the moment.

Im more worried about the Bills than the weather, said head coach Bill Belichick. I think the Bills are what we have to focus on and thats who we have to beat. The weather is the weather.

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels echoed Belichicks remarks, and also added that the passing game would not be impacted by low temperatures.

Buffalo Bills Gain Respect But Lose Mnf Heartbreaker To Ne Patriots

The Buffalo Bills started out their 2009 season on Monday Night Football by throwing away a game they had in the bag, as New England eliminated an 11 point lead with less than six minutes to play. The Bills were on the road facing the heavily favored New England Patriots and came away with a gut wrenching 25-24 loss. This marks the third consecutive game on Monday Night Football in three years for the Buffalo Bills and all three have resulted in games that the Bills lost by one point or two. In fact the 25-24 outcome is the exact same score as the loss versus Dallas two years ago. Like that game against the Cowboys, this one will also be leaving a bitter taste with Bills fans for quite some time to come.

My observations of the game as follows:

The Patriots are still going to rely on a heavy combination of passes from Brady to Randy Moss and Wes Welker. Ben Watson found some holes in the deep middle of the Bills defense in the last two drives and his catches brought the Patriots back. The ground game was okay but nothing special.

Parting shots:

If you are a Bills fan stay positive. If you a Patriots fan, hope that Coach Belichcik can continue to spin his magic.

After their domination of the Patriots in the wild-card round, the Buffalo Bills will need to wait until the result of the Sunday night game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers to determine their AFC divisional round opponent next Saturday or Sunday.

If the Chiefs win, the Bills will play Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium in a rematch of last seasons AFC championship game.

If the Steelers win, the Bills will host Cincinnati at Highmark Stadium. It would be their first postseason meeting since the AFC championship game in the 1988 playoffs.
