2020 Illinois Republican Primary Ballot

Don't Miss

Democrats Had A Good Night In Governors Races

Illinois GOP governor candidates visit Rockford area

CNN projected Wes Moore the winner in Maryland and Maura Healey the victor in Massachusetts, two seats that are currently in Republican control. Democratic governors in Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, New Mexico and others are projected to hold their seats, while Democrat Josh Shapiro defeated Republican Doug Mastriano in a seat where Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf was term limited.

But as Tuesday turned into Wednesday, Democrats have a shot at strengthening their grip of governors offices across the country.

CNN projected Kansas Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly the winner in her bid for reelection on Wednesday morning, while Democrats are competitive in Oregon and Nevada, two states that would represent Democratic holds, and Arizona, a state that would represent a Democratic flip.

The night is far from an unmitigated victory for Democrats and how the three outstanding key races tip could shift the way Democrats see their gubernatorial successes. And some of the most famous Democratic gubernatorial candidates did lose: CNN projected Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams failed to unseat Republican incumbent Gov. Brian Kemp in a rematch of their 2018 race, and Texas Democrat Beto ORourke was unable to defeat Republican incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott.

But few Democratic operatives would have said weeks ago that they would be in line to have this kind of night in governors races.

Final Nevada Results May Not Come Until Next Week

Control of the U.S. Senate could come down to the swing state of Nevada, where Democratic incumbent Catherine Cortez Masto and Republican challenger Adam Laxalt are separated by roughly 16,000 votes with an estimated 83% of the votes counted. But it could be days before final results are in, due to the unique way Nevada holds its elections. Unlike most states on the East Coast, Nevada predominantly votes by mail-in-ballots. They must be postmarked by Election Day, but can be counted if they arrive as late as Saturday. Voters also have until Monday to cure ballots that have problems like missing signatures. If they dont go through the cure process, those votes wont be counted. In 2020, Nevadas presidential results werent called until the Saturday after Election Day, the same day Biden was declared victor.

Remember: the Nevada Secretary of State does not make the laws, but we are required to follow them, the Secretary of States Office said in post on Thursday. Nevada election officials have not stopped counting and will continue until everything is completed. That includes working on the federal holiday, November 11, and all weekend.

Were working as hard as we possibly can in order to get the ballots counted, Gloria said Thursday afternoon. But whether we like it or not, theres no way we can move any faster than were currently moving.

Florida Gov Ron Desantis Coasts To Re

Floridas Republican Governor Ron DeSantis easily won re-election on Tuesday night, according to the Associated Press, positioning him for potential national ambitions or a future bid for the presidency.

DeSantis faced Democrat Charlie Crist, who himself served as a Republican Governor of Florida from 2007 until 2011. With 80% of votes counted, De Santis had 58% of the vote to Crists 41%.

A rising star in the GOP, DeSantis defined his first term as governor with resistance to pandemic-era restrictions and brash right-wing stances on Americas culture wars. His funding vastly outpaced Crists, and he focused his campaign on criticizing Democrats for what he described as the woke agenda. Widely considered to be a future Republican presidential contender, the conservative firebrand made headlines this year for his stances on LGBTQ issues, handling of immigration policy, and investigations into alleged voter fraud. He repeatedly drew liberal ire and swallowed media cycle after media cycle, leaving Crist and his moderate approach largely ignored.

Sen Maggie Hassan Retains Seat Once Viewed As Vulnerable

Illinois elections officials correcting issues with mail

Incumbent New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan clinched her seat for Democrats in an election the GOP had hoped would bring Republicans closer to Senate control.

Hassan defeated retired Army Gen. Donald Bolduc during a race in which both Democrat and Republican strategists viewed her seat as vulnerable. Republicans had long had their eye on the seat as the potential flip they needed to control the Senate chamber, but as Bolduc emerged as the frontrunner during the primary, his radical views sparked concerns among party officials.

Bolduc suggested, for example, eliminating the FBI and ending the direct elections of senators. He trumpeted former President Donald Trumps false claims that the 2020 Election was stolen. New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu endorsed a different candidate during the Republican primary, conspiracy-theorist extremist.

Once he became the Republican nominee, Hassan hammered Bolduc on his extreme views and she held onto a consistent lead in the polls. She outraised Bolduc at an immense scale, spending over $31 million on her campaign compared to the $900,000 Bolduc spent as of Oct. 19.

Bolduc veered closer to center during the general race, walking back his 2020 election denials and eventually earning endorsements from both Sununu and Trump. In late October, the Republican Senate fundraising group injected more money into the race in a last-ditch attempt to flip the seat, which they had last controlled in 2017.

Democrat Vicente Gonzalez Beats Mayra Flores In Hotly

The Associated Press projects that Rep. Mayra Flores, the first Mexico-born congresswoman, has been unseated by her Democratic opponent, Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, concluding a short tenure in the House that follows a high-profile special election victory in June.

“The RED WAVE did not happen. Republicans and Independents stayed home. DO NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT THE RESULTS IF YOU DID NOT DO YOUR PART!” Flores, R-Texas, tweeted Tuesday night.

Despite Flores’ win earlier this year, the newly-elected congresswoman was in for an uphill battle to hold onto her seat since day one, as her district was redrawn to include greater swaths of Democrat-voting San Antonio.

In Flores’ special election race, the congresswoman ran under previous district lines where Biden won by +4 percentage points in 2020, however under new district lines, the +16 Biden district is far more friendly to Democrats than before.

Fox News Decision Desk Race Calls: Gov Pritzker Wins Second Term

The Fox News Decision Desk says that Democratic Governor JB Pritzker will win a second term. He prevails over GOP challenger Darren Bailey.

In Illinois, which sets no term-limits on the governor’s seat, the two battled it out during several debates and Bailey pressed Pritzker on various critical midterm issues.

During the last debate of the cycle, Bailey blamed the Democrat incumbent for the rise of violent crime in the state, specifically in one of the country’s crime hotspots, the city of Chicago.

Mehmet Oz Calls John Fetterman To Officially Concede Pennsylvania Senate Race

Democrat Pennsylvania Lt. Gov John Fetterman and Republican opponent Dr. Mehmet Oz, whose Senate race was among the most contested in the country

Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz has called Democrat John Fetterman to concede the Pennsylvania Senate race, Fox News has learned.

The Fox News Decision Desk called the race for Fetterman early Wednesday morning, and Oz made the call to his opponent just hours later, the Democrat’s spokesman told Fox. The Senate race was among the most important battles in the country for the midterm cycle, with Pennsylvania being one of a handful of states that will determine control over the Senate.

“This morning I called John Fetterman and congratulated him. I wish him and his family all the best, both personally and as our next United States Senator,” Oz wrote in a statement. “Campaigning throughout our great Commonwealth was the honor of a lifetime, and I will cherish the memories and the people I met. Pennsylvanians showed up with passion and a vision for a bright future that I found inspiring every day. I want to thank my supporters, so many of whom worked tirelessly to spread our message and support me and my family.”

Michigan Election Results: Democratic Rep Elissa Slotkin Defeats Republican In Key Contest

Illinois primary election: Republicans face off for attorney general

Rep. Elissa Slotkin

Incumbent Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin has defeated her GOP challenger Tom Barrett in the race to represent Michigan’s 7th Congressional District in the House, the Associated Press projects.

Both Slotkin and Barrett have experience with U.S. Military operations. Slotkin served as a CIA analyst and served three tours in Iraq alongside the military, while Barrett served in the Army and has served deployments in Iraq, Kuwait, Guantánamo Bay, and South Korea.

Throughout the race, Slotkin, who is seen as one of the more vulnerable House Democrats seeking re-election, attempted to maintain her distance from President Biden felt by those in Michigan and around the country.

Slotkin, who currently represents Michigan’s 8th Congressional District, and Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Mich., skipped President Biden’s September trip to Detroit.

Asked in October during an appearance on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” whether she would support President Biden in 2024 if he sought re-election, Slotkin said she would support “the sitting president” if he chooses to run because that followed precedent. But she quickly called for new leadership “across the Democratic Party.”

Jim Oberweis won the Republican primary for Illinois’ 14th Congressional District on , defeating six other candidates. Oberweis received 25.6% of the vote, followed by Sue Rezin with 22.8%, Catalina Lauf with 20.1%, Ted Gradel with 13.3%, and James Marter with 11%. Gradel, Oberweis and Rezin led in fundraising and media activity with the latter two candidates also receiving the majority of endorsements.

The candidates focused on platforms and who would stand the best chance in the general election.

Gradel, a former kicker for the University of Notre Dame, described himself as a businessman and political outsider. He said he supported congressional term limits, saying, “Our founders envisioned citizen legislators, not Springfield and Washington politicians serving forever and collecting a pension.” Gradel said he would cut taxes for Illinoisians. At the federal level, he discussed making permanent the tax cuts from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. At the state level, he said he wanted to repeal a recent gas tax increase and freeze property taxes.

Fox News Decision Desk Race Call: Utah Republican Sen Mike Lee Survives Challenger

The Fox News Decision Desk is also projecting that Republican incumbent Mike Lee will hold on in the Utah Senate race. He defeats independent candidate Evan McMullin, who also failed in his 2016 presidential bid.

The Utah Senate election became an unexpectedly tight race as Lee, who was first elected in the Tea Party wave of 2010, faced a challenge from former CIA agent and one-time never-Trump presidential candidate Evan McMullin, who ran as an independent.

McMullin sought to capitalize on anti-Trump sentiment, pointing to the former president’s denial of the 2020 election while Lee focused his campaign on tying President Biden to high inflation and the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Public opinion polls showed Lee ahead of McMullin by anywhere between 5 and 20 points ahead during the midterm election cycle and. And though Lee outraised McMullin, the independent candidate received a boost from tech industry donors late in the race.

McMullin promised if he was elected that he would not caucus with either Republicans or Democrats in the Senate, but his campaign paid Democrat-aligned firms throughout his campaign and he raised funds through the Democratic Party’s fundraising organization ActBlue.

Rep Sean Casten Aims To Fend Off Keith Pekau In Possibly Tight Suburban Race

A south suburban mayor is challenging an incumbent Democratic member of Congress in the 6th District.

U.S. Rep. Sean Casten, the Democratic candidate, is seeking reelection to a third term in the House of Representatives against Orland Park Mayor Keith Pekau, the Republican candidate. Casten defeated fellow incumbent U.S. Rep. Marie Newman in the June primary, just weeks after the death of his 17-year-old daughter Gwen.

Casten first was elected to Congress in 2018, a year that saw a blue wave with Democrats capturing the House of Representatives off the heels of backlash against then-President Donald Trump.

He’ll be fending off Pekau during a year that’s expected to favor Republicans who many experts and political observers project to take back control of the House.

Nbc News Exit Poll: Arizona Voters Skeptical Of False Election Claims Embraced By Gop Candidates

Patrick J. Egan, NBC News Exit Poll Desk

Arizonas voters expressed high confidence in the states election count and the legitimacy of President Bidens 2020 win, overwhelmingly rejecting the questions raised by the states GOP candidates about the integrity of the election process, the NBC News Exit Poll found.

Republican candidates Kari Lake , Blake Masters and Mark Finchem have all publicly raised questions about Bidens 2020 win and cast doubt on the integrity of the voting process. But voters disagreed: By 63% to 35%, Arizonans said Biden legitimately won the presidency. And 73% said they were confident that elections in Arizona are being conducted fairly and accurately 26% were not confident.

NBC News characterized all three races for governor, for the Senate and for secretary of state as too early to call when polls closed in Arizona.

In Remarks To Supporters Warnock Braces Them For A Senate Runoff

Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., re-emerged before a crowd of his supporters early Wednesday and indicated he believes a runoff is possible in his contest against Republican Herschel Walker.

We know that when theyre finished counting the votes for todays election, were going to have received more votes than my opponent. We know that, Warnock said.

NBC News considers the race too close to call. If neither candidate tops 50%, the race moves to a runoff.

At this late hour, you may be a little tired, Warnock said.

A woman in the crowd yelled in response: Fired up, ready to go!

Warnock continued, Whether its later tonight or tomorrow or four weeks from now, we will hear from the people of Georgia.

Trumps No Good Very Bad Night

Few Republicans were more involved in these midterms than Trump and the former president had a particularly bad night.

It appears that Trump knows it, too: He is livid and screaming at everyone, a Trump adviser who has been in contact with Trumps inner circle told CNN on Wednesday morning.

The most striking loss for Trump came in Pennsylvania, where his chosen candidate, Oz, fell to Fetterman in what was the most expensive Senate race in the country. Trump endorsed Oz during the contentious Republican primary, effectively pulling through a brutal primary and narrowly into the general election. But where the former presidents backing was decisive in the primary, it was an albatross in the general election for a Republican Senate candidate who was attempting to make inroads in the suburbs by touting his own moderation.

While Trump did score some Senate wins Trump-backed Republican JD Vance defeated a stronger-than-expected challenge from Democrat Tim Ryan in the Ohio Senate race, while Republican Ted Budd defeated Democrat Cheri Beasley in North Carolina those wins have so far been limited to Republican states.

In the House, too, some Trump acolytes lost in what were seen as competitive contests that Republicans needed to win if they were going to build a significant majority in the legislative body.

Trumps evening was particularly bad when viewed through the lens of DeSantis romp of a night.

First place by first-instance vote

Donald Trump

Presidential primaries and caucuses of the Republican Party took place in many U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories from February 3 to August 11, 2020, to elect most of the 2,550 delegates to send to the Republican National Convention. Delegates to the national convention in other states were elected by the respective state party organizations. The delegates to the national convention voted on the first ballot to select Donald Trump as the Republican Party’s presidential nominee for president of the United States in the 2020 election, and selected Mike Pence as the vice-presidential nominee.

President Donald Trump informally launched his bid for reelection on February 18, 2017. He launched his reelection campaign earlier in his presidency than any of his predecessors did. He was followed by former governor of MassachusettsBill Weld, who announced his campaign on April 15, 2019, and former Illinois congressmanJoe Walsh, who declared his candidacy on August 25, 2019. Former governor of South Carolina and U.S. representative launched a primary challenge on September 8, 2019. In addition, businessman Rocky De La Fuente entered the race on May 16, 2019, but was not widely recognized as a major candidate.
