Jeep Compass Vs Jeep Patriot Design & Features

AutoStick-How the responsive gear shift improves fuel economy on 2017 Jeep Patriot

The Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot are both 5-passenger SUVs with very similar interior dimensions, but the newer Jeep Compass is offered with a larger touchscreen and the newest Uconnect® multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as modern creature comfort like a heated steering wheel.

Driving The Used 2017 Jeep Patriot

You either buy a Jeep for its off-road prowess or powerful on-road performance. Unfortunately, the 2017 Jeep Patriot excels in neither category. While the top-line models do carry a Trail Rated badge worthy of tackling mud, snow and up to 19 inches of water, the Patriot is no Wrangler. Even the little Renegade Trailhawk offers a better off-road setup. On the highway, the Patriot is slow and loud and lacks any will to pass with urgency. We experienced fuel economy lower than the EPA estimates, and that was with the CVT automatic. The 6-speed automatic is preferable for both its performance and better reliability record, but is not available with Freedom Drive II. Ride comfort is rather car-like, a nice change from the firm suspensions of the Mazda CX-3 and Subaru Crosstrek. However, just about every other competitor is more fun to drive, offers superior ergonomics and will hold better resale value.

Feeling Like A Modern But Not As Rugged Incarnation Of The Classic ’80s And ’90s Jeep Cherokee The Jeep Patriot Is A Simple Crossover That Makes A Decent Budget Choice

It may look like the boxy, truck-like Cherokee of yore, but the Jeep Patriot is a very different animal. It’s dated up against rivalsincluding the latest Cherokee and the pint-sized Renegade parked across the Jeep showroombut the Patriot may be worth a look if value is one of your main priorities.

We consider the Jeep Patriot below average in most categories, rating it a 4.7 out of 10, but its low price and cheeky personality make it worth consideration if simple transportation is what you’re after.

For 2017, the Patriot’s lineup is largely unchanged as the small crossover awaits a full redesign next year. The 2017 Jeep Patriot is available in Sport, Sport SE, 75th Anniversary , Latitude, and High Altitude trim levels.

The Patriot lands in an intriguing middle ground for crossovers between mainstream models like the Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, or Toyota RAV4, and some of the smaller models such as the Subaru Crosstrek, Nissan Juke, and Mazda CX-5. The Patriot is also essentially identical to the Jeep Compass, aside from its exterior styling. Jeep positions the Compass as a slightly more premium model, but there the differences are purely cosmetic.

2017 Jeep Patriot styling and performance

The base engine on the Patriot is a 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter inline-4 mated to either a 5-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission . The 2.0-liter engine is only offered with front-wheel drive and isn’t highly recommended.

Jeep Patriot Review For Sale Specs Models & News In Australia

The Jeep Patriot was a mid-size SUV that previously sold alongside the Compass.

Although it competed in a highly contested segment, the Patriot did not sell in similar volumes to its rivals and was not renewed when the new-generation Jeep Compass arrived in Australia in late 2017.

Unlike some contemporary SUVs, the Patriot had a few systems to support off-road driving, despite being predominantly front-drive. This design choice was continued through to the Compass.

The Jeep Patriot could be had from POA for the Patriot Limited to POA for the Patriot Limited .

Jeep fans looking for something in a similar size-bracket can also choose from the larger mid-size Cherokee or smaller Renegade.

Its Boxy Chunky Shape Has Aged Wellsort Of Like A Three

Thick in Jeep design heritage by borrowing some design cues from the Wrangler up front and the slab-sided profile of the old Cherokee, the Jeep Patriot has aged remarkably well.

We liken its chunky dimensions to a three-day beard, which works well enough to score it 6 out of 10.

The Patriot debuted all the way back in late 2006 as a 2007 model and, aside from some very modest updates, it remains largely unchanged. There’s a light macho look to it that is softened by some gentle curves and plucky standard fog lamps. Its boxy exterior pays off some dividends inside, where its cargo area offers decent utility.

Inside, the Patriot’s interior is functional, but not luxurious. Clean gauges are easy to read at a glance and most switches are located about where you’d expect them, but the overall look is let down by niggling cheapness in its details.

The big elephant in the room remains the Jeep Renegade, which is priced near the Patriot but offers a more modern look and feel inside and out without too many size compromises.

The Patriot’s Interior Looks Good But Compromises Abound

The 2017 Jeep Patriot is, inside, much as it hints from the outsidetremendously useful and versatile, with good cargo space and decent space for front seat passengers.

Just don’t look for luxury or a capacious second row, which is why it rates a 4 for comfort and quality.

The trim, boxy, bold look indeed yields acceptable passenger space for four, with second row seats that flip forward easily, and a tall roofline to make entry and exit good even for taller passengers. You could potentially wedge a third into the middle position in back, but that person’s leg space is taken up by a pair of oddly placed cup holders.

The feel of the interior is utilitarian at best, although the light spruce up applied to the Patriot for 2011 helped matters out a lot. Still, as the switchgear and choice of audio systems indicate, the Patriot is a step back into a different era.

Despite some improvement, the Patriot’s Achilles’ heelwhich some will find hard to acceptis the amount of noise and vibration that enters the cabin, as well as the hard, hollow plastic panels that line the cabin with a distinct, unavoidable cheapness.

Seating comfort is lackluster and none of the several upholstery choicesbasic cloth, cloth/vinyl, upgraded cloth, and even leatherreally help out.

The Patriot Lacks Fancy Features But Its Price Is Low Enough To Compensate

2017 Jeep Patriot 75th Anniversary Edition | Crosstown Auto Centre

With the introduction of the Jeep Renegade last year, the Jeep Patriot saw its lineup barely pared to a still hefty five trim levels.

Base models are just that, but there are enough options available to help shoppers personalize a Patriot that we give it a 5 out of 10 for features and equipment.

At the Sport level, the Patriot includes cruise control, roof rails, fog lamps, illuminated cupholders, rear-seat heater ducts, tilt steering, cruise control, tinted glass, and an auxiliary input for audio. But air conditioning and power windows and locks are optional, which helps explain the roughly $18,000 base price.

All models now come standard with SiriusXM Satellite Radio and Bluetooth streaming audio.

The Sport SE adds alloy wheels, heated seats, and a few cosmetic items, but still requires buyers to pay extra for air conditioning and power accessories.

From there, the 75th Anniversary package offered to celebrate Jeep’s big birthday last year is carried over. It’s also largely cosmetic, but it does include useful tow hooks, remote start, and a sunroof. Curiously, despite having seat heaters and a power sunroof, the 75th Anniversary also requires buyers to pay up for air conditioning and power windows. Notice a theme here?

Finally, the range-topping High Altitude builds on the Latitude with a number of styling add-ons plus leather seating surfaces.

All four-wheel-drive Patriots include the 2.4-liter inline-4except those with the Freedom Drive II package.

Used 2017 Jeep Patriot Pricing

The 2017 Jeep Patriot has an alluring Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price just under $19,000, but youll forgo such comforts as power windows and air conditioning. Better-equipped versions start around $21,000 for the Sport SE and $23,300 for the Latitude model. The fully loaded High Altitude package 4WD can bump the price past $30,000. At these prices, most Patriot models still undercut similarly equipped Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape and Subaru Forester models, but those rivals are newer and generally more appealing. Be sure to check the KBB.com Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for their new Jeep Patriot. Long-term residual value is another aspect in which the Patriot lags competitors.

At 22 Mpg Combined The Patriot Is Thirstier Than Some Larger And More Powerful Crossovers

The Jeep Patriot may strike you as compact and frugal, yet it’s not necessarily any more fuel efficient than much larger SUVs.

Mainstream models with the 2.4-liter engine, all-wheel drive, and an automatic check in at 20 mpg city, 25 highway, 22 combined, enough to score a 6.

If you’re looking for the most efficient Patriot, stick to the front-wheel-drive model with the 2.0-liter and a 5-speed manual, which comes in at 23/30/25 mpg.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is the disappointing Freedom Drive II, which pushes those figures down to just 20/23/21 mpg thanks to its lower power 2.0-liter that has to work harder to motivate its extra weight. At just 21 mpg combined, the Patriot with Freedom Drive II is on par with the much larger all-wheel drive Dodge Durango.

How This System Works:

2017 Jeep Patriot Latitude

The fuel system stores and supplies fuel to the car to help drive the engine. Fuel is mixed with air, atomized and vaporized in the engine intake system. It is then compressed in the engine cylinder and ignited which produces energy to move the pistons. There are different engine layouts and designs but most of them work in the same basic way.

When the system is working as designed, and under certain conditions, maximum fuel efficiency will be achieved. Numerous factors can have an affect on fuel efficiency so it is usually a constantly changing number but a serious and sudden drop in miles per gallon is cause for concern and the vehicle should be inspected.

Kbb Vehicle Review And Rating Methodology

Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBBs editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better than the other cars its competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built?

We take each vehicle we test through the mundane parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading as well as the essential acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.

Reasons Not To Buy A 2017 Jeep Patriot The Cons

1. Less-than-stellar Gas Mileage

Most of the 2017 Jeep Patriot trims get sub-par fuel economy for their class. The Sport and Latitudes will get you between 22 and 24 combined mpg. The High Altitude Edition gets somewhat better gas mileage with 23 city /30 highway mpg and 25 mpg combined.

2. Sluggish Performance

The 2017 Jeep Patriot trims that come with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine basically chug and get slow acceleration, going from 0 to 60 in a painful 10-plus seconds. Ride quality on urban streets is rather jagged and bumpy, and the suspension does not handle broken pavement well. The smaller engine also generates a substantial amount of noise, so don’t expect a quiet ride.

3. Cabin Noise

The cabin noise is excessive. Jeeps are known for being noisy due to their CVTs generating engine rpms. There are ways to sound-proof the exterior of the Patriot, and the noise can take some getting used to.

4. Substandard Crash Test Ratings

The scariest drawback are the crash test ratings. While it has mostly received adequate ratings, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2017 Jeep Patriot a “Poor” rating on the small-overlap front-impact test. The small-overlap crash showed very high risk for left leg injury on a driver due to the extensive intrusion of the instrument panel and door hinge pillar on the driver’s door.

2. Freedom Drive II’s Off-road Capability

One of the 2017 Jeep Patriot’s big selling-points is the Freedom Drive II’s light off-road capabilities. 3. Optional Flip-down Tailgate Speakers
