2016 Jeep Patriot Engine Review – 2.0L 2.4L 4 Cyliner

Simply put, the Patriot isn’t for those shoppers who want a modern interior, class-leading fuel economy, a relaxed ride or the latest in-car tech. But it does have a few benefits. As mentioned above, the Patriot will handle off-road obstacles better than competitors when equipped with Freedom Drive II. It’s also inexpensive, potentially undercutting other small crossover SUVs by thousands of dollars when purchased new. Tempering that, however, is that fact that the base Sport does without some features most people have come to take for granted, such as power accessories and air-conditioning, and will likely need to be added as options.

We recommend many competitors if you’re in the market for a small SUV. Jeep’s own Renegade is a more stylish and modern alternative, and you can still go off the beaten path effectively in the Trailhawk version. If keeping your crossover on the road is more your scene, check out the 2017 Honda HR-V, which boasts a large cargo area and excellent fuel economy. We also like the 2017 Mazda CX-3 for its blend of sporty handling and impressive cabin materials. These vehicles might end up costing you a little more up front than the Patriot. But as the old saw goes, you get what you pay for.

In Edmunds brake testing, the Patriot came to a stop from 60 mph in 121 feet, an average distance for this class.

Kbb Vehicle Review And Rating Methodology

Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBBs editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better than the other cars its competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built?

We take each vehicle we test through the mundane parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading as well as the essential acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.

A Poor Rating In The Iihs’ Small Overlap Test Is Cause For Concern

If you needed a reminder that the Jeep Patriot is more than a decade old, its safety scores should do that. Crash standards have changed, as have consumer expectations, which is why the Patriot scores a 2 out of 10.

In the government’s test, the Patriot scores four out of five stars, including especially worrisome three-star scores for frontal crash and rollover likelihood. It does, however, earn five stars for side impact per the NHTSA.

The IIHS, meanwhile, gives the Patriot top “Good” results in most categoriesexcept for an especially bad “Poor” rating in the agency’s tougher new small-overlap frontal crash test.

Outward vision is decent in the Patriot, but its roof pillars are much thicker than many newer rivals that make use of more advanced steel. A rearview camera is optional across the lineup.

No crash prevention system is available and the Patriot includes what is essentially the bare minimum of airbagssix total.

Driving The Used 2016 Jeep Patriot

Jeeps have a long history of favoring off-road capability over on-road comfort. Most models of the Patriot, though, dont stand out in either setting. Yes, you can get a Patriot that is Trail-Rated to slog through mud, snow and up to 19 inches of water, but to do so you must option up to the Freedom Drive II package. On the asphalt where most Patriots will roam, Jeeps least expensive SUV is simply outclassed by newer rivals that offer better performance, handling, ride quality and fuel economy. Neither of the Patriots available 4-cylinder engines feels very strong, and the CVT transmission does more for fuel economy than it does for performance, although the optional 6-speed automatic improves the latter. Highway ride and handling are okay, as long as you dont compare the Patriot to a more refined small SUV of which there are plenty.

Driving The Used 2011 Jeep Patriot

Thanks to its new suspension and steering calibrations, the rugged Patriot delivers a very car like ride. Although rapid maneuvers and sharp corners still produce a noticeable amount of body roll, in tight curves the Patriot never feels top heavy or tipsy. The cabin is somewhat noisy, but not annoyingly so, with most of the noise provided by the rowdy and rude 2.4-liter engine, especially when the throttle is wide open. Where the Patriot truly shines is off-road. Equipped with the Freedom Drive II four-wheel drive system, the Patriot was able to traverse small boulders and deep ruts with ease. The system employs a continuously variable transmission with an integral low range and a four-wheel drive LOCK mode that uses the ABS, traction control and engine computer to allow for rock crawling and low speed descents.

The 2015 Jeep Patriot Is A No

2011-2017 Jeep Patriot 2.4L Spark Plug Replacement

The 2015 Jeep Patriot remains a good budget-minded vehicle that, put simply, looks different than nearly everything else on the market.

The Patriot is somewhat overshadowed by the larger Cherokee and smaller Renegade models, both of them far newer and better targeted at the expanding market for small SUVs and crossover utility vehicles. That said, it lands in an intriguing middle ground. While clearly larger than the new subcompact Jeep Renegade, the Patriot isnt quite the size of the Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, or Toyota RAV4which face off directly against the Cherokee. Instead, the Compass sits in between its two siblings, more the size of the Kia Soul or perhaps the very different Nissan Juke.

Over the years since its launch as a 2007 model, Jeep has made the Patriot a better vehicle and a better value. The original was grim, loud, slow, and had a punishingly austere econocar interiorand most of those problems have been addressed in a series of updates and feature changes. Today, it offers a sensibly sized package that combines macho Jeep lines with enough softness and civility to make it practical family transport. It may not be the newest or best-equipped, but theres a lot to like regardless.

EPA fuel-economy ratings are as high as 30 mpg on the highway, but they dip down to the 20-mpg mark if you get that Freedom Drive II package. So the capability trade-off brings it down close to Wrangler mileage numbers, without as much capability as a Wrangler.

At 22 Mpg Combined The Patriot Is Thirstier Than Some Larger And More Powerful Crossovers

The Jeep Patriot may strike you as compact and frugal, yet it’s not necessarily any more fuel efficient than much larger SUVs.

Mainstream models with the 2.4-liter engine, all-wheel drive, and an automatic check in at 20 mpg city, 25 highway, 22 combined, enough to score a 6.

If you’re looking for the most efficient Patriot, stick to the front-wheel-drive model with the 2.0-liter and a 5-speed manual, which comes in at 23/30/25 mpg.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is the disappointing Freedom Drive II, which pushes those figures down to just 20/23/21 mpg thanks to its lower power 2.0-liter that has to work harder to motivate its extra weight. At just 21 mpg combined, the Patriot with Freedom Drive II is on par with the much larger all-wheel drive Dodge Durango.

The 2017 Jeep Patriot has a satisfying array of packages and features options that most can benefit from by installing and several powertrain configurations. The Patriot gets a robust fuel economy of up to 30 mpg highway and has 30-plus safety features, like a touring-tuned suspension, standard Electronic Stability Control , and Hill-descent Control as a possibility. For 2017, the compact-SUV Jeep Patriot adds onto its already strong base, yet still stands as one of the most attractively-priced SUVs in America.

It may look like the boxy, truck-like Cherokee of yore, but the Jeep Patriot is a very different animal. It’s dated up against rivalsincluding the latest Cherokee and the pint-sized Renegade parked across the Jeep showroombut the Patriot may be worth a look if value is one of your main priorities.

We consider the Jeep Patriot below average in most categories, rating it a 4.7 out of 10, but its low price and cheeky personality make it worth consideration if simple transportation is what you’re after.

For 2017, the Patriot’s lineup is largely unchanged as the small crossover awaits a full redesign next year. The 2017 Jeep Patriot is available in Sport, Sport SE, 75th Anniversary , Latitude, and High Altitude trim levels.

The Patriot lands in an intriguing middle ground for crossovers between mainstream models like the Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, or Toyota RAV4, and some of the smaller models such as the Subaru Crosstrek, Nissan Juke, and Mazda CX-5. The Patriot is also essentially identical to the Jeep Compass, aside from its exterior styling. Jeep positions the Compass as a slightly more premium model, but there the differences are purely cosmetic.

2017 Jeep Patriot styling and performance

The base engine on the Patriot is a 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter inline-4 mated to either a 5-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission . The 2.0-liter engine is only offered with front-wheel drive and isn’t highly recommended.

Used 2015 Jeep Patriot Pricing

The 2015 Jeep Patriot has an alluring Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price starting under $17,500. That makes the Patriot the least expensive new SUV, but youll have to compromise on creature comforts such as power windows and air conditioning. Better-equipped versions run in the $20,000 range, and a top-line Limited with options can top $31,000. At these prices, most models of the Patriot still undercut the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape and Subaru Forester, but all of those rivals are newer and generally more appealing. Still, theres no denying that the Patriot is an inexpensive SUV to buy and own, and its just coming off a win for the Kelley Blue Book 5-Year Cost to Own Award in the Compact SUV/Crossover category. Be sure to check the KBB.com Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for their new Jeep Patriot. Long-term residual value is another aspect in which the 2015 Patriot lags competitors.

Rugged And Restrained And In Its Element In The City Or Out On The Trail The Design Of The 2015 Patriot Still Offers A Lot To Like

The 2015 Patriot, sibling to Jeeps softer Compass cute ute, takes the best of the brands cues and shrinks them all down to a city-friendly size. Theres a lot of Wrangler in the front end, with the slab-sided sides and profile of older Wagoneers and Cherokees.

Some might thing that makes it look too traditional, others will appreciate the boxy designs heritage, and others will like that the boxy exterior makes for lots of usable interior space. Theres a lot to like on the outside, with proportions and sheetmetal that are squared-off but not too refrigerator-like, as well as detailing that keeps it simple but purposeful. Theres just enough softness and civility mated with lots of macho Jeep appeal and details like the seven-slot grille.

Jeep never missed a thing on the Patriots exterior, but its interior could have used more attention, with a look that falls to econocar mediocrity up close. Some brightwork has been added to the otherwise drab interior over the years, and the look remains sturdy and attractive enough. Once you get up close, though, you notice the low-rent materials, with lots of hard, dull plastic. Those wanting a nicer interior in a package this size should look to the Compass instead, as it has had a lot more attention paid to its cabin since introduction.

Used 2014 Jeep Patriot Pricing

Jeep claims you wont find a lower-priced 2014 SUV than the 2WD Sport Patriot, at just under $17,000, nor a lower-priced 4×4 than the 4WD Sport, at just over $19,000. At the top end, the 4WD Limited starts at just under $27,000. Given the cars econobox roots, you may feel hard-pressed to justify any of those prices. For a little more money , legions of more modern choices open up, albeit without some of the Jeeps special equipment. But if your budget says no to that stretch, then the Patriot may be in play. Plus, a car at the end of its production cycle will likely carry generous incentives. 2017 Jeep Renegade Engine Review 2.4L 4 Cylinder

You cant deny your roots, and neither can the Jeep Patriot. The Dodge Caliber econocar platform probably made sense for a low-priced, light-duty Jeep in 2007, but the small-SUV class is too competitive for that formula to still work. The Patriot can hold its own in modest off-roading when equipped with the Freedom Drive II package, but almost all drivers spend the vast majority of their time on public pavement, and there the Patriot is simply outclassed. Neither of the 4-cylinder engines feels very strong, and the CVT transmission does more for fuel economy than it does for performance, although the new 6-speed automatic goes a long way to improving the latter. Highway ride and handling are okay, as long as you dont compare the Patriot to a more refined small SUV of which there are plenty. The all-new Jeep Patriot cant come too soon.
