How To Check For A Bad Catalytic Converter In Jeep Patriot

Reading out the fault codes using a diagnostic device is relatively reliable. If you see any fault code from P0420 to P0424 or from P0430 to P0434 in the OBD2 scanner, it indicates a problem with the catalytic converter. However, this is not always the case, as a bad oxygen sensor can also trigger catalytic converter codes. Therefore it is necessary to investigate the issue thoroughly before you consider replacing the very expensive catalytic converter in your Patriot.

Exhaust Back Pressure Test

There is a more accurate way to check if the catalytic converter is clogged in your Jeep Patriot. For this test, all you need is a pressure gauge with its hose fitting.

  • Unbolt the oxygen sensor near the inlet of the catalytic converter in your Patriot.
  • Connect the hose of the gauge to where you removed the oxygen sensor.
  • Start the engine and wait until it gets into operational temperature.
  • If you notice higher than 3 psi back pressure on the gauge, it means the catalytic converter is clogged.

Jeep Patriot Catalytic Converter Replacement Cost

The catalytic converter is going to be fairly expensive to replace. In older cars, those made before 1981, the cost can range between $ 100 and $ 600. Obviously, the kind of car you have and the complexity of replacing the converter are going to increase the cost. It can take several hours to replace the converters, so make sure you ask about labor costs before agreeing to anything.

For cars made after 1981, the three-way catalytic converter is going to be much more expensive to replace than then older one. Your costs for parts are going to be around $ 350-$ 1500 , while parts and labor will be between $ 615-$ 2,200 . Because the costs vary so much, you may want to be sure you ask for a quote before you allow a mechanic to change out your catalytic converter.

How Long Does A Muffler Last

    Rear Catalytic Converter 2011

The lifespan of a muffler is traditionally estimated at 40,000-80,000 miles. But your muffler may fail sooner under harsh driving conditions like cold weather, corrosive road salt, and damage from road debris and potholes. You can help mitigate corrosion by frequently having your vehicles undercarriage washed, and choosing a replacement muffler made of corrosion-resistant steel when the time comes.

How Long Do Catalytic Converters Last

There are many factors that affect its service life, but typically catalytic converters last for around 100,000 miles or 10 years in Patriot. However, it can fail much earlier due to contamination, overheating or physical damage. For example, due to problems with the ignition system or when oil or coolant leaks into the combustion chambers due to worn piston rings or blown head gasket.

Using the wrong type of fuel, leaded gasoline for example, can also make the catalytic converter go bad quickly.

How Do I Check For A Recall On My Car

In most cases, the automaker will send you a notice in the mail to announce a recall. But if youre the proactive type or if you bought the car used you might want to check for a recall yourself.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration , over 100 million new and used vehicles were involved in some sort of safety-related recall in 2014-15. Recalls vary in severity, but they all relate to the safety of the vehicle, so theyre all worth paying attention to.

Start by looking up the year, make and model of your vehicle on a site like KBB.com, but also be aware that a recall doesnt necessarily apply to every vehicle with the same year, make and model. Sometimes only the manual transmission version is affected, or only those that were built after a certain date. The best way to know for sure is to call the phone number that we provide on your vehicles recall page or go to the government NHTSA site and look up your specific car by its 17-character VIN number.

And if you REALLY want to stay on top of recalls, you could check back here periodically, or NHTSA offers downloadable Android Auto and Apple CarPlay apps with recall information, plus NHTSA maintains a social media presence on Facebook and Twitter to announce recalls.

    Jeep Patriot Catalytic Converter

Bobhunter said:I have a 2014 Jeep Patriot. The check engine light came on and the diagnostic said the catalytic converter was going. I have 130K on it. Anyone else have that problem? The local Jeep dealer wants $1100 to replace it. I have seen the converter’s on Rock Auto parts for $250. How hard can it be to change one?

Dls said:I have a 2016 Patriot. Engine lights are common. NHTSA recalled a part for emissions which I changed out, then my garage tech told me to try a new gas cap because if it’s loose, it will set off yr engine light. New caps from Jeep say that right on the cap. Haven’t had an issue since I changed the cap. Get a second opinion if you are working with a dealer and make sure they give you the error code so you can look it up. Better yet but one of those readers for 40$ and pull up the code yourself. Make sure the garage you go to can do a smoke test to properly test your emissions. Emission and transmissions are common problems in Patriots. Hope this helps

Where Is The Patriots Catalytic Converter Located

CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT REMOVAL JEEP CHEROKEE COMPASS RENEGADE 2.4 EXHAUST MANIFOLD

The exact location of the catalytic converter is going to depend on the model year and engine size of your Jeep Patriot. But, they are not that difficult to locate. The catalytic converter itself is a part of the exhaust system. Tracing it, youll find it somewhere between the tail pipe and intake manifolds.

They almost always have a heat shield around them and an oxygen sensor somewhere before them. It is necessary for the catalytic converter to be before the muffler. The muffler is really the only thing that you can confuse for the catalytic converter on your Jeep Patriot.

The catalytic converter may be bolted or welded on depending on the year and make of the vehicle.

The catalytic converter is essential for your 2015 Jeep Patriot to run like it should. It keeps a lot of the engine components clean and make certain that everything is running well. If you want to keep it that way, then you need to be aware of the condition of your converter. Make sure your mechanic is checking its condition with each tune-up .

If you ensure that the converter is replaced when it is time, you can enjoy a smoother running car, better fuel efficiency and a smoother ride. A lot of your 2015 Jeep Patriot s performance is dependent on how well the converter is working. If you arent taking care of the catalytic converter, you can end up spending a lot to keep up your 2015 Jeep Patriot and to repair the damage the spoiled converter is causing.

    What Is The Catalytic Converter

    Catalytic Converter for 2011

The catalytic converter is made from precious metals, and its job is to burn off unwanted particles as they exit the engine. This keeps them from contaminating or damaging other parts of your 2015 Jeep Patriot , and this crucial task is only going to be accomplished if the converter is in good condition. Wear and tear over time is going to cause numerous problems related to contamination and internal damage, so you want to address the converter and get it replaced when this starts to occur.

Jeep Patriot: Bad Catalytic Converter Symptoms

It is not uncommon for the catalytic converter to fail, as the years and mileage take their toll. They will fail faster if there is an issue with misfiring or a bad air/fuel mixture.

When your Patriot has a major engine problem, the check engine light will begin flashing. In most cases, this flashing condition occurs to help try and save the catalytic converter.

Most of the symptoms of a bad catalytic converter have to do with the lack of exhaust flow through the Cat. Once it gets so clogged, your Patriot will be barely drivable.

Here are the most common signs of a bad catalytic converter in a Jeep Patriot:

    • MPG Suffers As the exhaust flow begins to slow, your gas mileage will as well.
    • Service Engine Soon Light Any vehicle made in the last 20 years is going to have an onboard OBDII computer. Itll give you the trouble code that youd need to diagnose and repair your Patriots emissions system.
    • Failure to Start Once the catalytic converter is so clogged, there wont be enough air flow for your Patriot to start.
    • Darker Exhaust Smoke
    • Rotten Egg Smell
    • No Throttle Response at Speed If your Patriot feels like it just wont go any faster than a certain speed without feeling like it is out of power, thats a very typical sign that a catalytic converter is failing.

Heres a pretty good video from Scotty Kilmer on this subject:

Jeep Patriot Clogged Catalytic Converter Symptoms Causes And Diagnosis

The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system in Jeep Patriot and its main purpose is to convert exhaust gases like carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons that are harmful to health and the environment into less harmful byproducts, like carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas. If the catalytic converter becomes clogged in your Patriot, it can affect the performance of your vehicle.

What Is A Catalytic Converter Anyway

The catalytic converter, which is often mispronounced and spelled cadillac converter, is the most important part of your Patriots emissions system. It takes the emissions gases that are a bi product of the normal combustion process and reduces them down to levels that meet federal emissions regulations.

The catalytic converter uses a catalyst to burn off residual fuel vapor and turn it them into:

    • Heat, lots of heat

Catalytic converters have been common in all domestic automobiles for nearly 40 years. They have gotten better at what they do from an exhaust flow perspective, and an exhaust cleansing perspective.

Bad O2 Sensors A Leading Cause Of Premature Catalytic Converter Failures

The O2 sensor in Patriot monitors the level of oxygen in the exhaust gasses that exit the engine and reports the data to the control unit which continuously adjusts the air-to-fuel ratio in the engine. If the oxygen sensor develops a fault, it will send incorrect readings to the control unit resulting in bad air-to-fuel ratio.

A fuel mixture that is too rich, i.e. when too much fuel is injected into the combustion chambers and there isnt enough air, can damage the catalytic converter in Jeep Patriot. This commonly happens due to a bad upstream oxygen sensor, but can also happen due to a bad MAF sensor or worn spark plugs. Any unburnt fuel in the engine that goes into the exhaust system will ignite in the catalytic converter. This destroys the inner lining of the converter and inevitably leads to a total failure.

What Is The Difference Between A Muffler And The Exhaust

A muffler is one component of a vehicles exhaust system. Its job is to reduce the noises of engine combustion and evacuation of exhaust gasses. The entire exhaust system starts with your engines exhaust valve and exhaust manifold and continues through a series of pipes to at least one catalytic converter, muffler, and tailpipe.

Dual exhaust systems may employ one or two catalytic converters and mufflers, depending on the configuration. Single exhaust systems are far more common and employ a single catalytic converter and muffler, occasionally featuring two tailpipes.

Do I Pay For Recall Repairs

Once the manufacturer has discovered that a safety recall is necessary on your vehicle, you wont have to pay anything for recall-related repairs. All the parts and labor necessary to complete the repair are paid for by the manufacturer . This is true even if you bought the car used or bought it from a private party.

A few things to keep in mind:

    • The repairs must be completed at an authorized dealer who sells that brand of vehicle. If you choose to use your own mechanic, you might end up paying the bill.
    • If you received a recall letter in the mail, bring it to the dealer. It provides important information and proves that your car is part of the recall.
    • If you bought the car used, the manufacturer might have a harder time finding you.

There is one exception to the fact that recall repairs are free vehicles older than 10 years old are outside the statute of limitation and usually dont qualify.

    What Is A Catalytic Converter

EXHAUST MANIFOLD CATALYTIC CONVERTER FOR JEEP COMPASS PATRIOT 2007

A catalytic converter converts the harmful exhaust gases produced by the engine into less harmful emissions before they leave the vehicle’s exhaust system.

The catalytic converter looks similar to a muffler. It is typically a stainless steel housing with a ceramic honeycomb inside that is full of platinum, palladium and rhodium. These elements help clean up harmful exhaust gases that otherwise would be expelled from the tail pipe.

How To Save Money On A Catalytic Converter Replacement

While you could save money on labor costs by doing the job yourself, it is not recommended for most people. Generally, you arent going to save much by doing the job on your own. Also, it may require welding to attach the catalytic converter. If you dont have the proper tools or the experience, then you want to leave this job to the professionals.

Your savings for doing it yourself will be minimal, but if you are experienced in changing out catalytic converters, then you can save some money. Its not a terrible time sink, thought he parts can be costly. Just be prepared to pay a lot for a quality catalytic converter. Its a vital part of your 2015 Jeep Patriot , and it not a part you want to skimp on.
